priesthoodpower reacted to MarginOfError in Figurative vs Literal
Hmmm....not so sure.  The 1981 introduction to the Book of Mormon stated "the Lamanites are the principal ancestors of the American Indians."  That has since been scaled back to "are among the ancestors of the American Indians."
If I had said, "I don't believe the Lamanites are the principal ancestors of the American Indians" in 1982, would you say I had been sowing the seeds of apostasy in my own life?
I get where you're coming from with the slippery slope argument here.  But realistically speaking, the Church has published and propagated theories and teachings that haven't held up to scrutiny. Having established that such mistakes and misinterpretations are possible, the door is already open to questioning what other mistakes and misinterpretations are waiting to be discovered.
Some people don't want to explore those questions, and that's fine.  Still, there are people that do want and/or feel compelled to explore those questions. For those people, telling them they shouldn't is counterproductive.  It's a lot better to teach them how to explore those questions in a way that can still build faith in Christ, even if the evidence leads them to conclusions you disagree with.

In a courtroom, “testimony” is by definition a story or narrative—a series of personal experiences and observations related by a witness that lead the audience to believe that a certain conclusion is the truth.  Technically speaking, “conclusory” testimony is not generally admissible.
I rarely bear my testimony, except to my cub scouts during Cubmaster minutes.  But when I do, the paradigm I follow isn’t “I know x is true”; it’s “this is why I believe x to be true”.  (I almost never use the words “I know”.  Too many years spent in court showing that witnesses didn’t actually know what they thought they knew . . .)

Is that what Jesus told you? Id hate to break it to you but every piece of literature and information about God/Jesus in this world is second/third/fourth hand information. Your truth is not my truth and vice versa the holy ghost doesn't speak to you the same way he speaks to me. Until Jesus himself comes out with a Youtube Channell NO ONE knows his full will/intent/Love. Its foolish for one human to tell another human that you cant join Christs church because of (fill in the blank).
The Gospel gives us an idea of the path to eternal salvation but the finer details are between the individual and God.
Covenants were made to be broken or else repentance is not neccesary but excuse me if you are the only perfect soul on earth that can keep a covenant thus making you the only member of Christs church.
    Both statements below are true!
There is a place for everyone who makes and keeps divine covenants under restored Priesthood authority in Christs church.
There is a place for everyone in Christs church.

This isn't an official term within the Church, but it's appropriate to describe a phenomenon I've personally experienced.
My aunt used to tell me if someone is in need of Heavenly Father's love, you pray to Heavenly Father that He might "zap" them.
My aunt zapped me during a time in my life when I needed God's abounding love. And after experiencing it, I have to say it's the perfect term to convey what can actually happen.
God has the power to fill someone's heart and soul with an overwhelming amount of His positivity and love.
If you see someone in need, consider praying to Heavenly Father that He might zap them. The power of God's love is transformative.

The world would be a boring place if no one had a sense of adventure.

In a sacrament talk last week the EQ presidents wife said home is the primary learning place of the gospel, sunday school, primary and RS/EQ is secondary.
Invite these inactives to sacrament only. They might like that idea.

I think there are two elements to this...
    a) leaving the Church
    b) leaving the Gospel of Jesus Christ
My Mother was inactive for 5 years while I was a teenager, she needed a break from the social aspect of Church. She still held FHE in our home and daily prayer/ scripture reading, she sent me and my older brother off to missions while she was inactive. She temporarily left Church, not the Gospel. This was back in the early 90's, the Church has evolved since and implemented "Less Church, More Gospel", dropping the third hour down to two hour Sunday service and implementing the Come follow me home study program. My mother was ahead of her time.
I recently was told by my bishop in a TR interview in regards to my sporadic Church attendance due to my Sunday work schedule..."you only need to take the sacrament to be in good standing with a TR". I attend church two-to-three times a month and leave right after sacrament meeting due to my work schedule, I get a lot of my spiritual feeding on lds.org and other church resources online. It is not impossible to think that one day Church will only be the one hour sacrament meeting...and eventually transition into a virtual thing where we log into a video conference and bless bread and water in front of the computer. Would this idea of not stepping foot into a chapel technically qualify us all as "leaving the Church?"
Categorizing people (whether in school, work or church) is a human thing that we need to do in order to figure out who we are. Less Church and more Gospel is a step away from categorization and closer to Godliness.

Looking forward to his return is a positive thing in that it gives you hope and meaning even if he didnt or wont come in your lifetime.
I personally have come to dislike it when people say "We must prepare for the second coming of Jesus Christ" especially in the context of getting us to be more obedient. I much rather prefer the words "We must prepare to meet Jesus Christ" because this implies meeting him  if he did return to earth tomorrow or if you died tomorrow and met him on the other side.

Removing one hour of classes is Heaven Sent for my ward. We do not have enough members to comfortably staff positions. It is common for people with seriuos illnesses to be pressed into service. I am glad there are no more hymns in Relief Society. More time to get something done. I think that the prophet is responding to the needs of the majority, the non USA saints. The small ward, hanging on by our fingernails, saints.

I must have missed the commandment not to gather outside of designated meetinghouses.  Maybe you should push your luck and risk heresy by visiting at each others homes.

Last year when I worked on Sunday and could only attend the 1hr sacrament, My bishop told me in my TR interview "due to your circumstances its ok to only attend sacrament, partaking of the sacrament is very crucial." and issued me my TR.
The internet is opening social avenues for people of all ages and particularly the younger generation. I am 42 and not really a millennial but I relate more with that generation. Outside of work/school, we are having less and less tolerance of being told what to do because we can go online in social media (FB, IG, Blogs etc..) and find acceptance there. When you attend church you hear people telling you what do to...or else you are "going to hell", or "you will not have the spirit with you."
We are on the internet learning of new ideas (science, diet, health, spiritual, medical, etc...). We are more informed and connected to cultures and people on the other side of the world that are interesting to us and we have less interest in the social culture going on in our own physical neighborhoods. With new research coming out everyday we are more able to connect the dots between science and religion. I believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the only true gospel and his church is the only true church but church is a social activity, worship is an individual thing between you and God. If I attend church and the majority of active members are 60 and over (wheres all the young families?) I have to put up with old people and their old way of projecting their ideals upon me. Its not a social environment I have to be in .
Technology has brought satan into our homes 24 hours a day so its spot on that our Prophet is countering with "less church" and more "home worship". This revelation is also the result of the reports coming up the chain from the stakes and wards that many are going inactive (I speak for my stake as a prime example). There are many that have left the church (my ex-wife is one) but have not requested removal from church records, so despite thinking that membership numbers are high, active members is a different story.
I see these new revelations and changes in our church as a process of problem solving.

Glad I am not the only one that has had wifey issues... 😉
Ok, I wish I were the only one that had that challenge.  Love has certainly had its challenges.
When I found out of my wife's emotional affair, I was devastated.  The hardest thing I had to go through.  There was a huge part of me that wanted to cut and run.  But after prayer, the answer was to love her and forgive her.  I don't expect her to return to church any time soon.  She isn't anti mormon, but just doesn't think it has what she needs.
That leaves me with what about our eternal marriage..  I have this strong feeling that all will work out if I do my part.  And my part is loving my wife.  Looking for the good in her everyday.  Serving her everyday.
I suspect you have felt many of the same things I have and probably to a much harder degree.  Keep loving her.  Kindness and a gentle heart.
I have found the more effort I put into loving her, the less pain I have.  I think that is part of the forgiveness process.  You will probably never forget the events, but the pain gets erased.  And happiness can return.  And your mind dwells on good things not the negative.  And I think that is what is meant by you remember them no more.

    Hi Priesthood power,
Heya man, no judgement here.  Although it is clearly not finished between you and the (ex) wife. What I am going to pray for is healing for you and your (ex) wife and that Heavenly Father will  eliminate the obstacles that have come between you two that you may be able to rekindle your marriage and return (and re-marry) one another. Also, maybe when the two of you hold your newest addition to the family, that the new child will remind you both just how the love between you has given another life breath in this world, and that love is a living breathing thing.
The only judgement I make here is that my instinct tells me that you and your (ex) wife simply belong together. I can't tell you how to do it, it just seems like something that need be accomplished. Blessings to you both and your children. Maybe you both live as long as you want and never want for as long as you live.

Thank you for sharing your story and being real. Similar to you and your family, I too feel the effects of life taking its toll on me and my relationships.
I have had similar thoughts as you in regards to my relationship with my wife, when I think back to the advice that my bishop gave me over the years, he was right all the time, the only problem was that I choose to make my own decisions.
In my current situation I have not yet visited with the Bishop, I am afraid of hearing what he will say.
Another piece of advice that I have come across was that the Lord puts obstacles in our path to strengthen us, he puts people in your life to teach you a lesson and grow from it.
You can look at it in two ways.
    1. Your wife came into your life, and you both experienced this sinning, and now you can go your seperate ways. Adultery is justifiable for divorce.
    2. You experienced this sinning together and now need to learn to forgive and grow closer together.
My intuition of hearing about your wifes attitude in not wanting to be repentant and actually liking the sinning, is that she needs to continue to go down that path until she can comeback on her own. You wont change her and I think you need to move on.

I allowed my 15yr old daughter to wear anything as revealing as she wanted,  but not in public. So she took 10 of the most skimpy bikinis with her into the department store dressing room, stayed there for 1 hr. Came out, put it all back on the rack. The next day she went swimming in her usual rash guard and board shorts.
Oh, and I was sure to monitor her IG account to make sure none of those pics got uploaded.
