  1. I can't personally vouch for this book, since I haven't read it, but I came across mention of it earlier this week, it has over 150 online reviews, and apparently averages what looks like 5 out of 5 stars from those who have read it. http://www.amazon.com/dp/1599552876/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2Z6H08N4Z96VK&coliid=I3A0YH2QP6BPUQ Has anyone here read it? If so, thoughts?
  2. What can some of us do differently here to help make that happen?
  3. Sorry about that. I haven't been here all that long, but I hope I haven't shouted you down. Have I?
  4. The Book of Mormon attests to this general principle too.
  5. 1) First, I'm not convinced you're accurately reflecting who the remnant of Jacob is in that passage. 2) As to the allusion to lions, I'd also suggest considering the following, to explain what their figurative role or behavior may very well be intended mean: "...They shall roar like young alions; yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry away safe..." https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/15.26-30?lang=eng#25 Also: https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/6.16-17?lang=eng#15 And: https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/21.24-25?lang=eng#23 To illustrate what I think the above passages are all saying, and to offer a glimpse of what I happen to believe the main thing the figurative lions would actually be doing, if you actually read just a bit further in the chapter you briefly cited, you get the following: "...And I will agather my people together as a man gathereth his sheaves into the floor. For I will make my apeople with whom the Father hath covenanted, yea, I will make thy bhorn iron, and I will make thy hoofs brass. And thou shalt cbeat in pieces many people; and I will consecrate their gain unto the Lord, and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth. And behold, I am he who doeth it...." (I actually suggest a careful reading of the entire chapter.) https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/3-ne/20.18-19?lang=eng#17 Thoughts? Disagreements? Impressions?
  6. Interesting. Sounds somewhat familiar to what Captain Moroni required of others, on several occasions.
  7. I haven't been here long enough to know what level of activity there is in a normal September. Any stats from the mods of whether, or to what degree, things have dropped off from last year, or from previous years?
  8. We are in the Jewish high holy days. A time for forgiveness, among other things.Appropriate timing. :)
  9. Agreed. Apologetics often centers around defending the faith, rather than meeting the needs of the individual. What we need more of is seeking to understand people's genuine concerns. I say that, not out of criticism, but because it is something I genuinely need to be continually reminded of. The former is generally a combative and defensive stance. The latter, not so much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gELtwsJlTg8
  10. Watching the 2008 film this morning, based on your recommendation.
  11. An additional thought, if there is still some interest...(a passage which is twisted and misconstrued by many Christian commentators): Isaiah taught: "And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." https://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/isa/8.18-20?lang=eng#17 Suggested translation: if someone claiming to be a messenger isn't teaching people to seek God, (central to the OT writings in the Law and the testimony), that would indicate there is no light in them. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/num/11.25-29?lang=eng#24 https://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/jer/31.31-34?lang=eng#30 https://www.lds.org/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/1.17-20?lang=eng#16 More especially: https://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/deut/4.29-31?lang=eng#28 https://www.lds.org/scriptures/nt/james/1.5?lang=eng#4
  12. An intriguing statement by Spencer W. Kimball was cited during Education Week recently: "When Satan is bound in a single home—when Satan is bound in a single life—the Millennium has already begun in that home, in that life."

    Fasting

How/when/why you fast is between you and God. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/esth/4.16?lang=eng#15 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasting If it hasn't been suggested yet in this thread, I highly recommend carefully considering the law of the fast in Isaiah 58.
  14. 1) Rambo - First Blood 2) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Both were recently suggested by others.)
  15. Just saw your post. Apologies. As indicated above, I agree with your post.
  16. Perhaps more of his words, and the words of others, were written. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/13.25-29?lang=eng#24 As to this next passage, may I suggest considering not just the Nephites in America, but also Roman history in the first century AD, and not just in Palestine, but also elsewhere: https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/26.12-17?lang=eng#11 Thoughts? Impressions?
  17. My take is that the OP likely meant precisely what you filled in here, but simply didn't word it that way. If so, there may be no need to get distressed.
  18. Elijah, clearly a prophet, spoke his opinion in scripture, that opinion was cited in scripture, and God's correction to Elijah's mistaken assumption is provided in scripture. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/1-kgs/19.14,18?lang=eng#13 (Romans 11 also refers to this event in a broader context.)
  19. I frankly don't see why we should care where we're called to serve. If God decided to send me to hell, I would hope I'd sustain his decision, roll up my sleeves, and patiently get to work. As Joseph said, "...And if we go to hell, we will turn the devils out of doors and make a heaven of it."
  20. Wishing there was a way to hit the "Like" button more than one time on posts like this. :0)
  21. Was reflecting recently on Hosea, his marriage, and his message (God's love for all his sons and daughters). Currently watching Pretty Woman.
  22. As President Hinckley's father counseled his young missionary: "Dear Gordon, I have your recent letter. I have only one suggestion: Forget yourself and go to work." From a recent education week session: "Don't focus on whether you're being humble...instead focus on serving others and serving God." Also, I can't recommend this speech enough...especially the repetitive question of "What would you have me do next?" that has resonated for years: https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/henry-b-eyring_go-forth-serve-4/ Thoughts?
  23. How about the Constitution Party? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_Party_%28United_States%29 http://www.constitutionparty.com/ I had a neighbor in Salt Lake County in Utah who ran for office with that party.
