  1. Welcome! Our family will be visiting your neck of the woods later this month. We'll wave as we drive by Portland. :)
  2. Sorry for your recent losses. Wishing you well! Welcome to the forum Ann!
  3. Perhaps. I would suggest a closer look at the flavor ingredients. New Guy, for what it's worth, have you given Pero and Postum a try? According to wikipedia: "Postum was popular with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and part of Mormon culture for many years because they abstain from coffee." Our family drank Pero and Postum when I was a kid. I have no idea whether they taste anything like coffee, but I liked them. If you can't find and try them in your local store, you can order them online, even at Amazon. That said, the flavor thing may be no bigger an issue than coffee-flavored ice cream. If so, this whole thing would be entirely up to your discretion.
  4. How so? Enron was a conspiracy. So was WorldCom. There are scores of similar recent examples. They happen all the time. They're part of flawed human nature.
  5. I disagree with your OP. There's nothing crazy about conspiracies. They happen all the time, especially when there is something to gain. Based on the evidence, and on the motive, I would venture that it was the military industrial complex - not the government itself - which actually had something to gain from a protracted war from 9/11. I've seen the frame-by-frame investigations of the footage of the planes hitting the tower, and it's pretty conclusive. (Subsequent findings by a former BYU professor confirm some of what the video footage implies.) See, for example, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_E._Jones While on that topic, consider the warning of President Eisenhower, president and former five-star general: http://www.npr.org/2011/01/17/132942244/ikes-warning-of-military-expansion-50-years-later By way of background, one of the last classes I took for my bachelors degree was a political science course called The Dilemmas of War and Peace, which was by far the most thought-provoking and reading-intensive course I have ever taken. It was developed by the Annenberg Foundation. I highly recommend it to anyone who has interest in the general topics of war and peace.
  6. I'm surprised to report that the decision to forge into this alone has been a providential one, and there have been significant findings already, after only three days. I was expecting it to take a couple of years hard work to prime the pump before coming up with worthwhile results. I still expect there to be a couple years' hard work to round this out, but thanks to the forum for being a sounding board to getting started on this. :)
  7. As iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
  8. It's related to the Restoration. Because automated translations like Google Translate are often worse than no translation at all. Try it a few times and you'll know what I mean.
  9. Hi Vort, I appreciate the willingness expressed by you and others here, but the request is actually much more involved than a quick paragraph or two. I was considering hiring someone to translate a large (and growing) body of classical Latin, but due to other recent developments, I'll instead devote time to studying the language for the lion's share of my late nights for a couple of years, and will eventually get around to doing my own translations.
  10. Inside Out Karate Kid (2010) Independence Day
  11. I have been in wards where I and other dads have helped watch kids during women's functions. Is there a lack of available manpower in your branch?
  12. God's Not Dead Enjoyable and meaningful film.
  13. Our HP classes stick to the assigned lesson.
  14. Hi pc, I frequently ponder some of the things I read, and some of the questions people ask of me. Also, while the sacrament is being passed each Sunday, like most members of the church, I ponder on the sacrifice Christ made for us, and on the things I might be able to do to become a better disciple. But I don't sit and try to empty my mind, as you describe it. Instead, I usually have something very specific I'm sincerely interested in learning more about, and the pondering is almost always in the form of a query or request. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/nt/matt/7.7-11?lang=eng#6 https://www.lds.org/scriptures/nt/james/1.5?lang=eng#4
  15. My mother-in-law's husband actually played on that demo team in Australia. Because of that, my wife and I will likely go see it with them if it gets made.
  16. Dillonkor, You might also want to consider this: https://www.lds.org/handbook/handbook-2-administering-the-church/selected-church-policies?lang=eng#21.1.22
  17. Dillonkor, requirement #2 would rule out using Facebook since, if I recall correctly, Facebook requires usernames to be the user's real name.
  18. Yes. And to be more clear, I agree with you and Folk Prophet that Facebook is not a good venue for doctrinal discussion. For our ward, however, it has been a good tool for getting many church- and community-related tasks done (or as you put it, "the place to make announcements or to share ward activities etc.").
  19. Awesome! However, I'm not sure how much an understanding of legal terms would help towards what I'm trying to accomplish. Thank you very much though. :)
