hagoth reacted to Backroads in Conflicted after Stake Conference
I admit, I had to wonder what's going on with ward councils to warrant such a focus. I do understand issues must be addressed, but one does worry at times about Christ becoming a forgotten footnote. I'm sure most if not all speakers had the best intentions, and perhaps many were edifice and were given what they needed. You, on the other hand, needed a Christ lesson.
My advice is not to ignore or condemn our leaders but to take iniative for our own spiritual needs. Seek the scriptures, old talks, uplifting words of prophets and apostles. I don't think the talks of wards, stakes, and even general conference are meant to be all we seek.
I sympathize, Jane.

You shouldn't feel any guilt. Employers deal with it all the time. You need to put your family first and that is understood by most.

I think believe Blackmarch is right. I think there a difference in comparing an LDS site to any Christian or site with a broader base. I come here looking to part of a community versus coming here to debate philosophies.
I had hoped to feel like a part of my ward when joining the forum.

An intriguing statement by Spencer W. Kimball was cited during Education Week recently:
"When Satan is bound in a single home—when Satan is bound in a single life—the Millennium has already begun in that home, in that life."

Interesting. Sounds somewhat familiar to what Captain Moroni required of others, on several occasions.

hagoth got a reaction from cdowis in Youtube Apologetics
Agreed. Apologetics often centers around defending the faith, rather than meeting the needs of the individual. What we need more of is seeking to understand people's genuine concerns. I say that, not out of criticism, but because it is something I genuinely need to be continually reminded of.
The former is generally a combative and defensive stance. The latter, not so much.

Was scrolling down my newsfeed and saw this. I think it sums up the point I'm trying to make quite nicely. With this adendum: competition is literally defined as comparing ourselves to others.
I think that our general authorities have made it quite clear that self-esteem is a good thing. If the author of the article wishes to argue against certain ways that we define self-esteem, or certain ways that we develop it, then he should probably consider a rewrite.

hagoth got a reaction from Finrock in Explaining: a prophet speaking as a prophet
An additional thought, if there is still some interest...(a passage which is twisted and misconstrued by many Christian commentators):
Isaiah taught: "And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them."
https://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/isa/8.18-20?lang=eng#17
Suggested translation: if someone claiming to be a messenger isn't teaching people to seek God, (central to the OT writings in the Law and the testimony), that would indicate there is no light in them.

God can also speak to us in dreams. I have had several where they helped me to have better understanding of God and life, to comfort me, to give me encouragement.

Perhaps more of his words, and the words of others, were written.

As to this next passage, may I suggest considering not just the Nephites in America, but also Roman history in the first century AD, and not just in Palestine, but also elsewhere:

We have also lost quite a few "plain and precious things" from the Bible, according to Nephi. My guess is that many more of Peter's words were written either by himself or others, but were rejected by the great and abominable church, or simply lost. But that's just my speculation.

As President Hinckley's father counseled his young missionary: "Dear Gordon, I have your recent letter. I have only one suggestion: Forget yourself and go to work."
From a recent education week session:
"Don't focus on whether you're being humble...instead focus on serving others and serving God."
Also, I can't recommend this speech enough...especially the repetitive question of "What would you have me do next?" that has resonated for years: https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/henry-b-eyring_go-forth-serve-4/

hagoth got a reaction from Josiah in Explaining: a prophet speaking as a prophet
Elijah, clearly a prophet, spoke his opinion in scripture, that opinion was cited in scripture, and God's correction to Elijah's mistaken assumption is provided in scripture. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/1-kgs/19.14,18?lang=eng#13
(Romans 11 also refers to this event in a broader context.)

Let me give you a different definition of self esteem. True and lasting self esteem comes from knowing that the life one is pursuing is pleasing to God. One can and should seek revelation and receive confirmation that their life is one that pleases God. When they receive that revelation, they understand their worth to God and experience true self esteem.
The article in the OP is discussing different types of worldly self esteem. Worldly self esteem is always transient and is never permanent.

hagoth got a reaction from Backroads in Do you have any thoughts as to why people become inactive?
I think the tone of part of this thread illustrates a glimpse into why some people choose to become inactive. It resonates to some degree with what I've come across talking to scores of people both in and out of the church.
I think we can all do better at Christian discipleship and fellowship.
Christ's warning against offending others is something we can gain from.
(If I ever offend anyone here, please let me know so I can attempt to make things right.)
That said, it is each individual's responsibility to grow deep roots. Because Christ promised that those who follow him would experience things that might otherwise cause them to take offense and/or lose faith, hope, and/or charity.
