  1. It is amazing how many people will learn how to swim if they are forced to sink. that goes for charity too. digging into someone elses pocket that is force
  2. I knew someone that every fast and testimony meeting would give a ten minute talk. It was a hobby to see what he would say. Would talk abut things off the internet he brought up think he have to say them. Quote movies and life story. Stories such as the switchman and the bridge. Stories in especially for mormons. Many are morbid twinkies to get a point across. Bruce R McConkie said to read a written sermon is o not rely on spirit. Need to rely on spirit and talks can give you them but use them in talk not the talk. A movie like charly lds contemporary music and other fictional stories sure it teaches truth but does it edify is it by the spirit as well that is what is important.
  3. No never was. Joseph was teasing his dad about drinking it. Then BRM felt even on something as smalll as what to drink in apostles dinner he should obey should always obey. Joseph wondered if it was unrighteous dominion for a senior member to insist his junior drink buttermilk. And brm learned to like buttermilk. Point of story was you dont distinguish between unrighteous dominion and people that dont question have a greater portion of the spirit with them.
  4. Not blind obedience but faith obedience You follow leaders because you have faith they are caled of God. Doctrine and Covenants section 1:38 says what I the lord have spoken I have spoken wether by my voice or the voice of my servants it is the same. Heber J Grant told Marion G Romney even if prophet is wrong follow him and you will be blessed but he wont be wrong. Joseph Fielding McConkie went to his parents house for dinner after he was married. He saw his dad take a glass of buttermilk. Jokingly he said isnt that the first line of apostatsy. Then his father explained he didnt like it but a senior member of the twelve saw he was served it after a meeting. When asked how do you tell between righteous and unrighteous dominion he said you dont and people that always question dont have as big a portion of the spirit as those that are obedient to there leaders. Is it necessary to pray about wether you should pay tithing, keep the law of chastity, for young men serve a mission, marry in the temple, some may object to this for a married couple decide wether or not to bring children into the world the prophets even recently at church schools spoke on that matter. Read Earl C Tingeys may 2004 ces fireside, C Scott Grow;s Jan 2002 devotional and Russel M Nelsons feb 2005 devotional. The lord has spoken on that if you have faith those servants are called of God. Its not were they said it but is it true. Keep word of wisdom. I think Joseph Smith said we dont ask God what he already revealed. If the lord is the one that called you you should never say no to a calling. Husbands are to preside in righteousness in the home doesnt mean they are superior just preside decided who says the prayers and other family descisions. If you have been through the temple you know the answer of never criticizing the lords annointed
  5. Things we can do to put families back together. 1. As a culture, more strongly discourage premarital sex and cohabitation. Premarital sex sometimes leads to premature marriages built out of necessity. While the guy ultimately "does the right thing" he resents it, and the foundation is week. Alternatively, the gal has the baby and is an instant single mom--aka broken family. Cohabitation leads to a higher risk of divorce after marriage. Sociologists agree on this. A pattern of "I can always leave if MY needs aren't being met" results, once again, in a poor foundation to the marriage. Sex ed. in schools should unapologetically stress abstinence. We parents should talk the talk here, and set the expectations. 2. Churches need to strengthen their men's groups and programming. Additionally, leaders may want to work at ways in which general church programming can be made more appealing to men. Often what happens is that since most attenders are women, the programming gradually becomes "feminine." When men do come, they feel awkward. 3. Parachurch organizations, like Promise Keepers, should be supported by church leaderships. Other forms of small group meetings for men to support each other, and be frank with each other, can be powerful. 4. When the worst happens, real men pay their child support, honor visitation promises and times, and try to bolster their children through the visits, not compete with or demean the mom. These are just some random thoughts. Hopefully there's something fruitful here. ← That stat sounds like Jesse jackson complaining about the population of blacks in prison. Does that stat tell you what percentage of crimes are commited by those people. You go to pison if you commit a crime not because of your race. That side is biased I some other stats at www.prodeathpenalty.com on innocence and its not near what they are telling you. How many are actually released from prison. An escaped or released murderer can murder another innocent man an executed murderer won;t. Alma has good points defending the death penalty. D and C 42:19 and nephi he that kills shall die. I think homicide would go down if it was suicide basically. His blood cries for vengeance. If you are against the death penalty you are saying ticking someone off being in the wrong place at the wrong time or a number of other reasons are worthy of death but intentionelly taking another human life isnt. That doesnt make sense.
  6. Could the reason more black people are executed is because more of them commit murder. Trying to pull race card. But do they see the race percentage of victims or how many are put to death in proportion to the crime. The lord is no respector of persons and law shouldnt either. Regardless of skin color if someone commits pre meditated murder they should forfeit there right to live. What would happen if Wisconsin had a death penalty would Jeffrey Dahmer of done what he did. And what more punishment could the person that killed him get in prison. None really with no death penalty in prison there is no reason not to murder. For Dahmer my heart does not bleed for him by the wicked are the wicked punished.
  7. I know some people that treat Christmas like the sabbath. Had companion that wouldnt stop at convenient store for that reason. Played football that morning though. Those stores are open. Christmas falls on sunday this year so that wont be an issue. However when it doesnt fall on sunday would you go to a place of amusement bowling alley skating rink, movie. I see no problem with it. I know some people that ski that day and people dont like working there. Businesses that open on christmas make that choice too and when people take those jobs they know that it requires christmas work when they apply. It is nice to spend the day iwth your family and Christmas is on a sunday this year. But I see no problem with patronizing a place of amusement on a weekday christmas day. It is a legal holiday not a holy day.
  8. If you believe Jesus is God of this world thou shalt not kill he that killeth shall die. It is better that a millstone be hung around there neck and dropped in the depths of the sea. He that killeth shall die. He instituted the death penarlty for murder dont know were he said not too. People make him after there own image though.
  9. All the people he touched in the last 26 years. What about the people because of his crimes were not able to be touched in the years. He traumatized families of 4 innocent people does anyone care about that or the reason he was given the death sentence in the first place. Those victimes were traumatized a lot more than a pretended remorse. He didn't care too much about the consequences before he illegally took 4 lives. Does anyone listen to Ken Hamblin. I can't get him on the radio or on internet right now. He will have a hay day. I don't agree with that myself. he always plays another one bites the dust and celebrates when a murderer is put to death. They should be but celebrating it is sick. He really had a hay day when Karla FAy Tucker was killed. I owuld oppose the death penalty if those people who killed wouldnt kill first then we wouldnt have to worry about it. But since they dont respect human life there lives should not be respeced.
  10. If legislatures and judges decided cases on wether riots would break out or not would be a sure mob rule.
  11. D and c 42:19 thou shalt not kill but he that killeth shall die.
  12. Judge not unrigteously but judge righteous judgement. Dallin H Oaks gave a talk on that. For safety he should be locked up. Scriptures support capital punishment. For the sake of society;s safety I would believe in it. State has duty to make judgements as does church. We need to make righteous intermediate judgements and it is righteous to belief the fit punishment.
  13. Joseph Smith told his brother to go ahead and get married right away. There is nothing wrong with that. I have even heard of stories were a dying spouse told someone to marry soon why shouldnt they.
  14. There are innocent people that get it. But a cure all for it is chastity before marriage fidelity after and avoidance of alll homosexual activities. I can't figure out gay people wanting to fight funding for it when there behavior that can be controlled causes it.
  15. In acts the people willingly gave of there substance the united order people give willingly. Socialism is confiscation by force. SAtan is force and Christ will never use force.
  16. First of all, modern revelation has told us very little about Government...the only thing I remember reading is in the D&C where it says that the Constitution was inspired by God.Well, yes it was. But not the Judeo-Christian God. This country was founded by Deists, who believed that a Creator created the world, and then ceased interfering with it...meaning no miracles or prophets. However, the Constitution was inspired by God in the sense that it was based on Providence (which I think means the "will" of God)...which really just means that the Constitution is in harmony with God's laws (nature). So it is the best system of government that humans have at this time, because it is the closest system to the way the world works (which works according to God's design). Joseph Smith seems to have agreed that the Constitution was inspired...but obviously mistook the word "God" as it appeared in the document to mean his own Judeo-Christian God, rather than the more generic "Creator" that was the intended meaning. As for socialism/communism... According to the Bible, it was not created by Satan. In fact, it was practiced by Jesus... I am not criticizing Jesus...I don't have any problems with Socialism or Capitalism...I think that both should be used in combination in a way that may best benefit people...it probably should be used differently in different nations according to their needs...just my opinion. ← socialism and communism are satans counterfeit to the united order.
  17. I agree with you that defense is important, it's the interfering in other countries wars/disputes that I disagree with...anyway, that's a different subject. "health care food stamps caring for the needy isn't. Were in the constitution is autorization to care for the less fortunate." This doesn't make your Constitution sound very nice/Christian does it? Methinks it's about time somebody re wrote the Constitution... :) ← It is noble to dig into your own pocket to help your neighbors. It isn't to dig into your neighbors that is theft. Some people do fall on hard times but people survived with individual and church charity. In the doctrine and covenants it says the lord raised up people for the constitution. 9th and 10th amendments say what is not in federal constitution is reserved to states and people. What would of happened to your nation if the us didnt help you in world war II. Britian had a fourth of the world too and is much older than the us who fought a war to keep us and needed our help. There is interests at stake in Iraq and was in world war II we entered because we were attacked and had to nip it in the bud. Cold war was that way too. Didn't go directly to russia. Here is a couple of articles on charity and going to war in the right places. http://www.lonsberry.com/writings.cfm?story=1508&go=4 http://www.gmu.edu/departments/economics/w.../socialism.html
  18. Communism socialism didnt exist in biblical times evil governments did though. That is why modern revelation is necessary. If you need your car fixed would you go to a mechanic who hasnt studied anything in decades about mechanics or kept up on new cars just did same old stuff or someone that kept up to date with changes. Would you go to retiring dentist who hasnt touched a book about dental procedures or kept up to date since he graduated from dental school or someone that keeps up to date. Why base something on a book several millenia old but ignore what is happening in modern times. That is why revelation is necessarty to know the mind and will of the lord right now.
  19. it is communism and socialism that is corrupt. Satan inspired both of them. What communist government doesnt oppress there people. What socialist government which is similar dont use coveting and theft. Here is a list of what church leaders said about it. I would believe what they say on the matter both evil governments. And recommend John Stossels web page give me a break talks about dangers of community sharing. http://www.cougarboard.com/noframes/message.html?id=1461083
  20. Defense is in the us constitution health care food stamps caring for the needy isn't. Were in the constitution is autorization to care for the less fortunate. A strong military protecting us is in it. There is a terrorist network. World war 2 we didn't directly attack japan. There is a war on terror and we need to nip it in the bud. In the 1930;s someone thought it was a good idea to make piece with a dictator who cant keep his promises and we know what happened. Defense is in the constitution charity isnt.
  21. Just curious, what would you prefer happened to those poor and disadvantaged people? if charity which was given under no obligation was not sufficient to meet their needs? ← What is going to happen since government cannot create wealth when there is not enough money from the government to care for those people.
  22. President Kimball told the story of how someone lost her ring so the insurance company paid her 2000 grand. She found it a year later and did not feel good about keeping the money so she decided to write a check out to the boy scouts. Did the money belong to the insurance company or boy scouts. There is the story of a friend of George Albert Smiths who was wealthy and gave 10 percent of his income to charity and that is how he paid his tithing to something he felt was a good cause. President Smith said I think you are an awfully generous man with someone else;s property. the lord has been your best partner and you gave his money away. 10 percent of our paycheck is the lords to do what he wants with it we have no business giving it to charity. his money. With that said some pople justify government programs to help the poor and disadvantaged. Even saying it;s chrisitan charity. But is it. Do you have a right to take money or property from one persons house to give to another. Government charity is charity with another mans property. Jesus told the rich young man to give to the poor and it wasn't general but just to teach him according to Bruce R McConkie in DNTc. We should be willing to give. He had to be willing. But he had the choice to make. We don't have a right to be charitable with someone else;s property and money. That is theft. There is nothing Christian about being charitable with someone else;s property.
  23. Thought to be grounded in spirituality? I doubt the religious or spiritual community has a patent on morality. I'm sure there are many agnostics and athiests out there that are just as moral (maybe even more) than your average church goer. dontagreeljefe and fusudocmd are showing such audacity to suggest that only true Fathers are those you are priesthood holders of the LDS religion. M. ← A father and mother married in the temple and true to there covenants will be the only one;s that have claim upon there posterity for time and all eternity. Every other relationship ends at death. Temple work is for those that did not have the oppurtunity in this life. Sure it may be done but if someone refused to accept it in this life will they in the next? Section 76 of the doctrine and covenants says people who heard the gosel in this life and don't accept it will go to the terrestial kingdom the honorable people that is if they dont accept the gospel here when offered.
  24. I will be honest, this got me angry. almost the entire post got me angry. What makes you a father, a good father, is your love and devotion to your child. The temple or faith means nothing when it comes to being a true parent. Can it help you be a good parent, yes. Is it the only way to be a true parent, not a chance. I have seen many " good Lds priesthood holders" who have no bloody clue how much damage they do to their children cause they have the heads so far up their own backsides. Are these men truly "Fathers" because they have the covenant? I think this is a slap in the face of every "Mother" and "Father" who has ever born a child outside the faith, telling them some how they aren't good enough. That the good parents out there who sacrifice and devote so much to their children, are something less because they are outside your church. "Father" or "Mother" isn't a title on this earth, it's an obligation and a gift. Only those who earn it deserve it, and you don't earn it by covenants, you earn it by giving all you have every waking second for your children. ← So you are saying the prophet is wrong. You are using the excuse of some men that don't honor your priesthood. You can only get sealed in the temple is that very important Dallin H Oaks said if someone has a bad experience with electricity do you stop using it. Cree L Kofford in either june or july 98 ensign said prophet said to get married in temple shouldnt that be good enough reason. Could you say I love you lets get married though we won't be together after 50 years. Heard president hinckley say something like that. Eternal marriage is the lords way and is only available for those who qualify themselves for the temple. Why be upset with someone telling you what the lord said on the matter.
  25. I agree with you lisajo... and I would say this also which has been said by others: I would never ever abandon my child... no matter who they marry... BUT: I have raised them to be sure they get a spiritual confirmation on whomever they marry. So far I have only had my oldest marry and when they said they were getting married and had a confirmation... I asked the Lord for one also... He gave it to me... told me that this girl had been prepared for my son... that was all I needed to know... and they are sooo good together... perfect.. even... LOL and they were sealed in the Columbus Ohio temple.. ← Bruce R McConkie never asked the lord who he should marry. Found the right person and married her. Said should of done some counseling with the lord on the matter. One thing is for sure it has already been revealed by prophets we should marry in the temple. I don't know any church leader that said its ok not too. Doctrine and Covenants 1:38 wether by my voice or the voice of my servants it is the same. So the spirit will never tell anyone to marry someone they cannot take to the temple since he won't tell the prophet one thing and then tell an individual to disobey him. In a talk I cant remember offhand were Spencer W Kimball said to be broadminded with the lords eternal program is like being generous with someone else;s money.
