What's the difference between 200,000 deaths and 200,001 deaths?  None.
"Give me liberty or give me death" - someone famous.
"Those who give up liberty for safety will have neither liberty nor safety" - another someone famous.
"“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - another one also famous.

Conservatives working to loosen anti-pollution regulations are like people who don't want government mandated facemasks... they don't believe the pollution reduction rendered by the regulation is significant enough or even existent to warrant the restriction.
And environmentalists use the same argument as mask-karens... if you don't approve of the regulation you must not care about the environment!  It's so stupid it's not even worth a first-grade exercise in dialectics.

If she'd stayed in Britain and done "princess stuff" - like opening schools, giving speeches at charity events, cheering up terminally ill people in hospitals - instead of creeping off in a sulk the moment she got bored with it, I don't think anyone would have cared two hoots that she was American. We like Americans. Its true we do make fun of them, but we make fun of everyone and everything - including ourselves. In fact especially ourselves: I don't know if the writers of Family Guy think they're offending us Brits by portraying us as beer-swilling cockneys with wonky teeth, but if so they've missed the mark by a long way!

P.S. Classic British comedy, making fun of British and American stereotypes together:

Same difference.  Because, you're having a government forcing EVERYBODY - even those who don't carry the virus and can't possibly spread it - to wear one.  There are so many assumptions that the government is making here.  1.) Everybody is a carrier. 2.) Masks are required to stop viral spread regardless of other methods exercised. 3.) Any mask - including non N95 standard ones - can stop viral spread. 4.) Masks can improve societal health more than it hurts... and the main thing - 5.) Stopping viral spread among a healthy population is the best way to deal with a viral pandemic.

    The disagreement with masks isn't:
    - Disagreeing with your right to wear a mask wherever you want.  That's obviously your right.
    - Disagreeing with your right to request that people on your property/business wear a mask wherever you want.  That's obviously your right.

    There is disagreement on:
-Whether you can dictate that I wear a mask in the privacy of my own backyard.  Or at a park.  Or other communal places where my say matters too.
    - And how do we best treat each other with respect, even when views on this topic vary.

Here in Wyoming there's a philosophy of "let local people make the rules".    A few towns have enacted mask mandates because it makes sense there (like Jackson Hole where you have tons of tourists packed into a tiny valley).  Most towns it just doesn't make sense (we're naturally distanced, small head counts, infection rates are really low).  It's totally respected that you choose to wear a mask, or ask people to wear a mask on your property (including your business), but no Big Brother is going to force you to wear a mask everywhere.
This week, Walmart announced that they were going to mandate mask wearing as part of their national (international?) policy.  And people completely swarmed the stores before they were forced to wear a mask -- I haven't seen the aisles so packed, shelves so empty, or tensions so high since this whole thing started.  The resentment of the rule is very real, and people are deferring to other stores instead.
I myself... admittedly I'm irrationally resentful of it.  Yes, I'll do it because you asked, but I really don't like it.  Which is strange because when I visited Denver and had to wear a mask absolutely everywhere (those are the rules there) I was totally fine with it.  But here where I'm usually the only person in the grocery aisle ... it amazed me how resentful I was of it this weekend.

    Stop being a jerk.
You can't control your spouse.  You can only control yourself.  So you can't stop him from being a jerk, you can only stop yourself from being a jerk.
Do things because you love your spouse.  Don't do things because you want your spouse to do it back to you.
If you want to rub your spouse's back, rub it.  If you don't want to rub your spouse's back, don't.  Don't do it because you expect him to rub yours right back and don't refuse to do it because you want to punish him for not rubbing your back.
Then, starting right now... get a notebook and pen and write down at least 3 things every single day that your spouse did that you appreciate.  Three things.  Every.  Single.  Day.

We had a great backyard Sacrament Meeting last Sunday.  We had a Joseph Smith Restoration theme to reflect on Joseph Smith for his death anniversary.  We had a recording of my Missionary son playing the Joseph Smith Medley (First Prayer, Poor Wayfaring, Praise to the Man) and a talk reflecting on the life of Joseph Smith and the Restoration Proclamation.  We had 3 other ward families join us plus my in-laws and 5 ward missionaries so we were a bigger than usual group.  The cool thing is the missionaries can now enter our home!  So, even as we continued to hold sacrament in the hot and humid backyard with birds flying and dogs running all over the place because it's harder to set up in one place indoors, we were able to hold dinner inside the house so we can fellowship in relative comfort.
I enjoy Taylor and Tyler and I've watched some of their videos.  I also enjoy @prisonchaplain's sermons although I haven't yet got to the last one he sent.  I'll for sure go through it this week.  Thanks, PC!

    ...you might well be confused.
"Gaslighter" is the word for it all right! Making out like they had always been called "The Chicks", so that if we thought they were ever called The Dixie Chicks, we must be going crazy!

This, and the propensity of humans to form tribes (or teams).  We see something as "our tribe" and we flock to defend it... especially if it's not too much trouble to do so.
One thing about these businesses being cancelled by woke culture, though, is that they are good businesses.  Like, I don't think CFA would have retained all those new customers if they sucked.  The thing is, they are on top of the mountain on the customer service scale and you feel it.  So you come back just because you don't want to have to deal with the frustration of getting onions and pickles on your "do it your way, no onions, no pickles please" burger.
I don't know if there's a relationship between woke millennials and bad business.... there's probably a study on that already.  In any case, somebody thought a jobs board for non-woke businesses is a good idea.  Can't find the link right now.

...just in case she reads this board.
After the brave, brave stand taken by Lady A and The Chicks in removing the terrible words "Antebellum" and "Dixie" from their names, isn't it time you thought about YOUR name...Miss Twain? Twain is a five letter word with an "a" in it...like "slave"...and it even has an "i" in the same position as...Dixie?
See what I'm getting at, Miss Twain?
Also if you jumble up the letters of "Shania Twain"...and take some away...and add some others...you can spell out "General Lee". Rearrange them again, and add a few more, and take away some others and you can make "Ku Klux Klan" and "Uncle Remus". Do you really think no one's ever noticed that???
And on top of all that, you have the same surname as Mark Twain, who used the N-word in his books!
I suggest you quickly change your surname to Shania Blacklivesmatter, because black lives matter, and if you don't support Black Lives Matter then you clearly don't think that black lives matter, so you might just as well change your name to Adolf Hitler.
(Sorry to bring my ranting here. It's just that my family tell me they're sick of hearing about it.)

I know that for the most part boycotts don't work.  There have been a few in history that did work because the tools were available.  But most of the time, they aren't available.
However, protests combined with boycotts have power given to them by the media.  And if the media hypes it, they boycotts gain enough steam that they could destroy a business.  (ex: Chick-fil-a in Britain).  What could have saved it is if enough conservatives came out to support Chick-fil-a (CFA) as they did in the US.  But there weren't enough conservatives in Britain to care about it.
In the US, however, we had a "reverse boycott" where Huckabee called on all conservatives to come out and support CFA by going there for lunch.  All across the country, people were waiting in lines out the door.  Businesses decided to use them to cater business lunches.  In our offices, we frequently had breakfasts every Friday catered by CFA. It eventually became the fastest growing restaurant chain in the country (world?).
Earlier in Texas, Julian Castro publicised a list of business owners who supported Trump.  And he encouraged a boycott of these businesses. Well, it backfired.  A particular BBQ chain, I believe was in the San Antonio area, which got several weeks of constant lines of customers.  Some were new customers who had never heard of them who just came to support the business.  They declared that if it weren't for the boycott, they never would have discovered how good their BBQ was.  Now they're frequent customers.  -- This happened to many of the businesses on the list.
And I'm sure you've all heard of Goya Foods today.
I believe these reverse boycotts do actually have a powerful effect (sometimes dampened by things like the quarantine) because of one quirk of human nature.  People don't know how to "NOT" do a thing.  They do know how to DO a thing.
Say I normally go to Burger King for my fast food fix.  Then I'm told to boycott it.  The human mind doesn't like being told stop doing something, or to figure out alternatives.  But if there is a good cause and all I have to do is "go to CFA for lunch"... You mean, all I have to do to support this good cause is to eat the yummiest chicken sandwich in the world?  Well, twist my arm a bit.
Today, we are in the middle of a minor famine because of the damage to the food chain.  But here is a low-priced food company with all the foods we normally like to eat.  And all we have to do to support a good cause is to buy that already low-priced, high quality product that I probably want anyway?  Well, twist my arm a bit.

Speaking of running off... my chickens didn't run off, they got run off... had to move them to a member-owned farm 25 miles away after my HOA threatened to put a lien on the house.  Come to find out, the HOA by-laws are held higher than the county permit... anyway, one day in the new farm and a rogue bantam rooster plucked all the hair out of my silkie rooster's head to hopefully steal his hens away from him.  Proud to say the silkie rooster lost his hair in a bloody battle but succeeded in protecting his hens.  That poor silkie looks so funny bald tho.

You're talking about masks?  Show incontrovertible evidence that ANY mask (and not the N95 or the Respirators) reduce deaths and health problems by such a degree as to overcome the risks provided by mask wearing - health concerns of prolonged non-regulated-mask wearing plus the concerns that made mask wearing in public banned in Florida from 1951 to 1981... plus the freedom of expression infringement that caused the mask ban to lose its teeth in 1981 which is also applicable to its twin sister of mandated mask wearing... etc. etc.
Smoking has incontrovertible proof of its health impacts not just on one's self but also on others.  Even THAT was not banned in all public places in the entire nation as it is considered an infringement of freedom.  Only 26 States banned it.  Yet... you don't hear too much about smoking karens.

Conservatives, not so much.  Libertarians, very much so.  They all get lumped on the same bucket usually.  The concept is not about "protection".  The concept is about Private Property.  In the East, there is not much State-owned property like there is out West.  American tradition (conservatism is rooted on tradition) is built on Private Ownership.  The environmentalist debate is that only the State can protect the environment whereas private owners cannot.  Libertarians, of course, take the very opposite position - the State cannot be trusted to protect anything but its own interests.  It even sucks at protecting enumerated freedoms how much more for State-owned property.

In my town, stores are required to provide customers with disposable masks.  That includes Walmart.  Sometimes the door-checker doesn't know that they have to provide masks to those who doesn't have one to comply with the county mandate.  So you might have to go to a manager to get one.
I am 90% sure all counties that have a mandatory mask mandate require all businesses to provide the disposable masks to their customers.
Now, about Walmart mandating masks.  I'm 100% fine with that.  It's a private business and they can require anything they want.  People who don't want to comply have many other shopping choices.

Well... Luther is basically Uzzah.  He had good intentions but because he did not bring his intentions to fruition within God's order was plagued by his conscience as he witnessed until his dying breath the unintended chaos - political, cultural, and religious - he caused.  @Carborendum might agree with me that Luther is like Sanderson's Lord Ruler, trying to steady the ark using his own wisdom by trying to bend the heavens to his will and harvesting ash and soot and blood instead as he stumbles from irascible foible to foible.
The days of Luther is pretty much reflected in today's progressive movement... using theses instead of tweets.

We were just talking about Martin Luther in that other thread.  As Pope Francis has stated - Luther had a medicine that the church was in dire need of.  Unfortunately, Luther administered the medicine in a way that does not conform to God's order.
Same in the LDS Church.  The Church is led by fallible people.  But there is an order established to account for the fallibility and a way for people to get relief from the fallibility of leaders but not fall out of God's order.
