  1. An alternative to this is: "We followed the Prophet and confabulated reasons to persuade others to do so", versus, "We followed the Prophet and this is sufficient reason". That is what I think the BYU letter writer was saying. I assume BYU has a stated policy with letters to the editor that only doctrinally approved letters are suitable, so I agree with you J-A-G that once approved the subsequent pulling was unhelpful.
  2. Or at least the spirit can prevail if we can beat our inner Pharisee best two out of three.
  3. This has been reported several times, but I guess it is finally a go since they have a set opening and venue... --------------------------------------------- Book of Mormon musical to open on Broadway Written by: Dan Metcalf Jr. Contributor: Chris Vanocur Last Update: 1:47 pm The Book of Mormon SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A satirical musical about the Book of Mormon and LDS missionaries has been scheduled to open on Broadway in March of 2011. 'The Book of Mormon' is a stage musical written and produced by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creative force behind Comedy Central's animated series South Park. According to an article in Broadway.com, The Book of Mormon will open at the Eugene O'Neill Theater with previews set to begin on February 24, 2011, with opening night on March 24. Parker and Stone have often poked fun at the culture and doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in several episodes of South Park and other projects. According to Broadway.com, the play will follow two missionaries as they face several hazards while spreading the Mormon message in Africa. ---------------------------------- Anyone here been on an African Mission for the Church?
  4. Even we Mormons have received the Gift of Nuremberg: That is that we must be responsible for our own evil doings. I have confidence that the majority of us Mormons would decline a request by a Church Authority to strap a bomb to our backs and wander into a crowded market place to explode it. There is a point to which our own innate sense of right and wrong kicks into gear, no matter how pervasive the push toward obedience in all things.
  5. You mean like the Rabbi at the Hebrew National Hotdog factory? Get thee behind me calorie laden dessert treats! My guess is that MoE was saying that the true meaning of remembrance of covenants comes from an internalized process rather than manufactured clothing items. That significance lies within rather than residing in the totem or beads.
  6. Years ago, BYU cancelled the scheduled PG rated movie Bless the Beasts and the Children. The manager of the BYU student center listed the reason as being, "It was too real for our people". Could this letter have been too honest?
  7. If there is one moral that stands loud and clear, it is to smoke hams and not kippers. It may not be kosher but at least it doesn't smell fishy.
  8. I would like to issue a challenge to stick with the topic for the next three posts.
  9. Lizzy, it would be best to hold the pen at arms length when writting.
  10. Sometimes for older women and men, there is the option of using Giant Sea Turtle years in place of regular human years. That way they can be much younger.
  11. One very valid question is what should the Church do with money tithed from fraud schemes? I doubt the Church would ever accept such money knowingly, but what's the policy on fraud money that was accepted in tithes unknowingly?
  12. If the missionaries did have beards, think of the extra work for the Mission President to have to measure each and every one to make sure it complied with regulation length. Nuff' said.
  13. Bright pink mohawks would really make us stand out from the crowd! We follow the leader and not the crowd. Any crowd that results is purely coincidental.
  14. For the full effect, would you mind banging your shoe as you say this?
  15. "They could always have a debate on freedom of speech at BYU, but they would have to watch what they say." - X-files, Unwritten Archive, Circular Container, 2nd floor, Last Cubicle, 1914
  16. Could be that most scriptures do not have a white cover.
  17. After City Creek is finally finished, putting a retractable dome over the BYU stadium would also be an excellent idea. Here is a suggested idyllic conference schedule for BYU Utah Utah State USC Notre Dame Alabama Oklahoma Ohio State Michigan LSU Arizona State Florida Boise State Hawaii
  18. Playing alternate home games with Notre Dame, Navy and Army would all be good for BYU and the other schools. Setting up games with USC, Oklahoma and Alabama would be good too.
  19. Utah and TCU had regular wins.
  20. All you have accomplished then is to take in the lopsided perspective on either end of Mormonism. Seek the middle as the Buddha would say.
  21. It would be nice if they could target this collection effort back to at least 1980. Many of those politicos and employees may still be around.
  22. From the article, a more correct statement would be: "Because if a private industry misstates a government program policy in such a way as to commit fraud by deception, the government says the fraudsters should not be doing this". You could then add, "This is not acceptable because it comes as a result of Obamacare and some incidental business laws".
  23. September 11th should be a day of solemn rememberance and not one for crackpots and politicos to use as their own fodder. Whenever a Quran is burnt, it is the same as burning the Book of Mormon or the Bible, for what one does unto the least of thee one does unto the Greatest.
  24. Suspending a kid because his eyes were red from crying about his father dying two days earlier seems so egregious that a little public humiliation for this school seems appropriate. I still want to slap that principal upside the head and I'm usually peaceable.
