  1. Oh, I really like Janette Rallison. I'll have a think about who else to recommend. Do you have any specific subgenre likes or dislikes - fairy tale retellings, other fantasy, historical, etc?
  2. The only effective advice I can think of is to practice.
  3. Who said anything about knowing it ALL? Just a little scriptural evidence that knowledge is possible:
  4. Talk to the ward clerk. If your records haven't been moved in already, he'll know how to get them.
  5. You are... Actually the manuals encourage discussion. They practically mandate it, actually. When I read the thread title my first thought was, "Raise your hand and wait to be called on." That's how it generally works in my Sunday School.
  6. Well, I got the Silent Generation. Does that mean I missed out on those Greatest Generation qualities the church was supposed to teach me? Though I prefer to think of myself as belonging to the sixth generation since the pioneers on the line I chose to count down on. I would go with my generation number from Adam, but we don't actually have our genealogy traced back that far with adequate sourcing.
  7. I'm trying to take the quiz (there are always going to be multiple questions with multiple answers that fit or no answers that really fit) and I couldn't help but notice they have an option for fiscally conservative but socially liberal but no option for fiscally liberal but socially conservative. Is that combination so impossible?
  8. Isn't there at least one episode specifically about harassment training? Which reminds me of this harassment training:
  9. How about that fruit from Lehi's Tree of Life?
  10. I thought @Vort was saying you will likely be granted the wish of NOT becoming bishop. And here I thought @JohnsonJones was saying many people in general do not trust him, not many bishops specifically.
  11. Other dictionaries say about the same. Flabbergasted means very surprised. Not upset.
  12. My horn keeps snagging and tearing the tops. It doesn't fit through the head hole very well.
  13. For some reason I've been thinking about this recently.
  14. I finally got all caught up and now feel more that my time is my own.
  15. I ended up making a pie and freezing the leftovers. I'll probably pick and freeze some more tomorrow. And I used this for the pitting:
  16. You could have what percentage of the DNA is from what ethnicity/national origin exactly correct and it still probably wouldn't be the same as the exact percentage of your ancestors who came from what ethnicity/national origin. You get 1/2 of your DNA from your father and 1/2 from your mother. Probably about half of what you get from your father is from his father and half from his mother. But it's not like during meiosis the cells sit down with the chromosomes and carefully count out half of what you got from each great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparent to pass down. So full siblings get slightly different ethnicity results, even though they have the exact same ancestry. Not because the test is wrong but because the DNA is different. And I am now imagining a hypothetical situation where two people whose great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents are all matched up in 1:1 sibling pairs (so each one of Person As ancestors is a sibling of one of Person Bs ancestors) compare their DNA test results. I wonder what sort of relationship their DNA analysis would guess they had?
  17. I remember wanting to post this commercial a few months ago but don't think I ever did. This discussion seems like a good second chance for it.
  18. I'm not sure yet whether these ones will end up as pie, juice, jelly, or what.
  19. You mean Arrow? The one that regularly crosses over with The Flash? I can't remember when I stopped really caring about the characters and story. The Red and Dorothy kiss annoyed me and made me uncomfortable. But what really got me mad at the writers was when they had Rumple get completely pure of heart - and we know it worked because he was able to remove the sword from the stone or something like that - and then about two episodes later he became the Dark One again through a plan that would have taken some time to arrange. Um, no. You do not go from being completely pure of heart to scheming to become the Dark One, knowing full well what that means, in a matter of a couple days or weeks. And to answer the question in the title, I think I mainly watch because I like the characters, though some shows I watch to keep up with what is going on elsewhere in the multiverse (I watch all of Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl because I don't want to miss out on anything that's going on, even though I don't think I ever really liked Arrow). It's actually driving me crazy a bit because I've been madly binging on four shows to get up to date on what happened during the last season, and I don't really want to be binge watching right now, but I feel sort of compelled to get it finished ASAP. Other stuff I watch or have watched because that's what my family or friends are doing and I want to spend time with them, or to be able to discuss the show when in comes up in conversation, or so I can recognize and understand the pop cultural references. And I watched Remington Steele during a particularly bad time because the silliness made me smile and there wasn't much that did then.
  20. When I first saw the title to this thread I confused Gene Simmons with Richard Simmons. For some reason I feel the need to share that information. Carry on with your music discussion.
  21. I had that sort of concern about how we and He could feel joy in such a situation. It was partially laid to rest by a quote from The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis. "Ye see it does not." "I feel in a way that it ought to." "That sounds very merciful: but see what lurks behind it." "What?" "The demand of the loveless and the self-imprisoned that they should be allowed to blackmail the universe: that till they consent to be happy (on their own terms) no one else shall taste joy: that theirs should be the final power; that Hell should be able to veto Heaven....it must be one way or the other. Either the day must come when joy prevails and all the makers of misery are no longer able to infect it: or else for ever and ever the makers of misery can destroy in others the happiness they reject for themselves." But I don't think we really believe that He doesn't mourn for his children who don't make it. I can't remember what my references for that impression are, though I suppose it likely I could find some if I weren't too lazy to get up and look for my copy of The God Who Weeps. And was willing to wait to post this until I had a chance to look through there. Question: Are sadness/heartache and joy always mutually exclusive? That makes sense, considering Lehi, who had the dream, and Nephi, who saw it later, didn't have to follow the rod to get to the tree.
  22. I have a pretty high tolerance for heat, though I do avoid really hot foods because I prefer to be able to taste the flavors. I can't stand the flavor of olives, and the texture of squash makes me gag, though I have learned to fight past it and get it swallowed.
  23. And because of things I've heard and read, I will add: Don't ask if it is okay if you don't go, or if you can do good by staying home, or anything along those lines. Ask if staying home would be congruent with His will. Or ask if He wants you to serve a mission. Or ask for guidance to determine His plan for you.
  24. @ArminWell, I'd say the mote in your picture is actually a beam.
  25. Two reasons for this: 1) We are not very good at staying on topic. I actually sort of like this most of the time. That is the way most conversations go in the real world, after all. And it's easier to return to the original topic here than it is in the real world. 2) If we see signs that somebody is heading for trouble, we will try to head that off first. And most of us think that a) men seriously dating before missions and b) men deciding not to go on a mission because of personal preference are putting themselves in harm's way. If you stick around, you will see these patterns pop up a lot. And rereading your response here and the original post, I have to verify: you are basically asking for introductions to women to date online? Edited to add: The opening of your first post asked for help, of which advice is the most frequent type of help given in the forums. I think advice of one kind or another actually made up the majority of this discussion.
