  1. Growing up on a farm, I used to love milking the brown cows because when I finished, we would have a ton of chocolate milk to drink. When I was done with that, my next chore was to pick all the pies off the pie tree. I would always get excited when I found a pumpkin pie on the pie tree. Most of those didn't make it back to the house. In all seriousness (I didn't grow up on a farm), its' sad 7% of people are that dumb but not extremely surprising. Here's an article from Australia about younger people not knowing where food comes from. http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/life/kids-still-dont-know-where-their-food-comes-from-20140526-zrmk1.html "Three-quarters of Australian children in their final year of primary school believe cotton socks come from animals and 27 per cent are convinced yoghurt grows on trees," "A third of five-to-eight-year-olds believe that they [pasta and bread] are made from meat," "almost a third of the country's primary school children thought cheese was made from plants and a quarter thought fish fingers came from chicken or pigs." The list goes on
  2. Well that's true. His grammar is pretty sad. I can just see all the FLDS people sitting around, "Wait, what? Who is murdering who? What's going on? Why can't God write the sentences for him?"
  3. As you already know, the minimum wage in Seattle just went up to $15/hour (or $13.50 with medical benefits) and many other cities and states are soon to follow suit. One problem is that peoples' hours have been cut so that the employers don't lose money. Most people end up making less overall because they're working less hours. Not to mention, the price of goods obviously skyrockets. I agree, it's a horrible idea and probably the biggest threat to our economy right now.
  4. Fair enough, that's why I wasn't going to go into it. My apologies
  5. Since you ask, here's Hebrews 11:3 "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." We understand the second part of this verse to rule out the possibility of Him using preexisting matter. Additionally Genesis 1 (and Moses 2) repeatedly say "God said 'Let there be ___' and there was ___." Genesis 1:9 says, "And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so." This explains that when He spoke it, it came into existence. This happens over and over in the creation account. He spoke the world into existence. Yes, but the key is that it says the heavens and the earth. Colossians 1:16-17 sheds some more light on the topic. Referring to Jesus it says, "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist." This means that Jesus 1) was present at creation 2) created "all things." The following part of the verse clarifies that this means all things including all things in heaven. This includes angels and even Lucifer (regardless of whether or not he was an angel). Some more passages on Jesus' role in creation include John 1, 1 Corinthians 8, and Hebrews 1. I'd like to add that I say this only because I was asked and so that @Snigmorder can understand my opinion. I don't mean to be argumentative in any way.
  6. Without going into the whole ex nihilo debate (as much as I'd like to), I think that the idea of theistic evolution is important to address because of its increasing popularity. First of all I think that all of us whether LDS, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, etc., would agree that "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1:1)." So the question to the theist becomes: Did God use evolution to create the world? I believe that theistic evolution is contrary to the very nature of God. God is not a God of death; He is a God of life. The evolutionary process is one of repeated death for billions and billions of years. The Bible makes it clear that death is a result of sin. If evolution is based in death, and death is based in sin, than evolution itself would be based in sin. Furthermore, because death started at the fall of man, how then could death have been necessary to create man? Genesis 2:7 "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
  7. It is important to note that many different denominations and sects of traditional Christianity view the sacrament (communion) completely differently. To partake of the sacrament in an LDS church means something completely different than in a Catholic church which means something completely different than in a Lutheran church, Methodist, Baptist, Calvinist, Anglican, the list goes on forever (Here's a Wikipedia article explaining some of the differences). I never partake of the sacrament when visiting another church unless I fully understand what it means and what statement I am making. There's transubstantiation, there's consubstantiation, there's pneumatic presence, it's extremely complicated.
  8. (First of all @person0 nice to meet you [insert handshake]) His exact quote during his campaign was "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United State." Here's the video of him saying it if you don't believe me.
  9. I pulled nearly word for word from this article with one exception (Clinton Behind Bars) It was PolitiFact's list, not mine.
  10. Hey there folks, haven't posted in a while but I was having a discussion the other day and thought I should take the question to my friends at MormonHub. Is Trump Keeping his Promises? Build a wall and make Mexico pay for it Temporarily Ban Muslims from entering the US Bring manufacturing jobs back Impose tariffs on goods made in China and Mexico Renegotiate or withdraw from NAFTA and the TPP Full repeal of Obamacare Renegotiate the Iran deal Cut taxes Bomb and take oil from ISIS Put Clinton behind bars The list goes on
  11. 1 Corinthians 7:2 "“Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.”
  12. @anonymousutahatheist, I am no Trump guy either and I understand that you just want to vent, that is completely okay. Only about 45% of Utahns voted for Trump (source). The reality is that most didn't. This is definitely important to remember because the majority of Utahns who voted did not vote for Trump.
  13. @TracyCornett, Welcome to the forum! It's great to have you here.
  14. My advice is be 100% honest. Tell your husband everything even though he will probably react negatively. The important part is that you put these things behind you and never turn back to them. It is also important that you do everything you can to keep your marriage intact.
  15. I just remembered "It Is Well With My Soul." This hymn has a more powerful story behind it than any other. Horatio Spafford was such an amazing man and more like Job than anyone I know of in modern times.
  16. I've seen you around some already, but it's nice to meet you. Glad you're here!
  17. Welcome @kyrie_eleison! Glad you're here. This forum has great people and great conversations.
  18. I think becoming completely obsessed with anything is a form of idol worship. This definitely includes work and money. 1 John 2:15-17 "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever."
  19. It's nice when we agree on theology. He would remain neutral on some things because he knows that politics have so little importance in the grand scheme of everything. However, I think he would care about things like abortion. God hates watching innocent babies die. Jesus would know what's really important.
  20. Mark 2:13-17 "And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him. And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." It is important not to miss the point. Jesus' purpose in spending time with these people was not to have fun with them or party with them, it was to bring them to repentance and save their souls. Proverbs 13:20 " He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed."
  21. 1 Nephi 11:35-6 "And the multitude of the earth was gathered together; and I beheld that they were in a large and spacious building, like unto the building which my father saw. And the angel of the Lord spake unto me again, saying: Behold the world and the wisdom thereof; yea, behold the house of Israel hath gathered together to fight against the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And it came to pass that I saw and bear record, that the great and spacious building was the pride of the world; and it fell, and the fall thereof was exceedingly great." I'd be a little worried about this if I believed the BoM. Just kidding
