  1. Let me bold this other section for you I would also ask, if you are a quiet person, why don’t you stop being quiet and reach out to others instead of waiting for them to reach out? Truth is, we are all the same. We are all a little apprehensive about reaching out to others. and the ascension of the popular? What does that even mean? It honestly seems like your own bitterness seems to be a bigger issue than any of these supposed injustices
  2. “Behold, it came to pass on the morrow that the multitude gathered themselves together, and they both saw and heard these children; yea, even babes did open their mouths and utter marvelous things; and the things which they did utter were forbidden that there should not any man write them.” My wife is under the impression that this scripture is saying new born babies were talking. My view is that the miracle was more about what was being said by the youth than that babies were speaking. who is right?
  3. Just a reminder that the ultimate destiny of our souls is to have an exalted body. Yes, a spirit only existence may be our current “normal” but it is not superior to us with a real body. I personally believe that us as fallen man in these imperfect bodies is a superior state than a spirit without a body.
  4. I have a friend who believes a food shortage is being manufactured right now to better control the populace
  5. But I don’t recommend restaurants because I love people
  6. I have invited many people in my life to repent. Particularly on my mission, it was almost an hourly thing. But I don't think I really loved any of the people I invited to repent. And to this day, I think it is the same. I invite others to repent because it is my duty and I have hope for an eternal reward. If I am a little more frank about it, it seems more like a game. Can I convince the person to change by sharing scriptures and promising blessings? If so, I win. I would go as far as to say that I have disbelieved most people who say "I am inviting you to repent because I love you". It seems so far outside the realm of possibility that I deny that it is even possible for a man to do it. Now, I am growing in charity. I have grown to care more deeply about the pain others feel. It honestly breaks my heart when people feel emotional pain, though it is not instinctive yet. All this being said. What is my best bet in overcoming this? How can I grow to the point where I wish others to repent because I love them, and not out of a sense of duty?
  7. Sorry, my post is not about the question in the example. My question is more about whether there is a term for when someone uses a philosophical approach to derail a question into a realm of discussion that is no longer useful (ei "Can we know God exists" (a useful questions) and "Can we even know you and I exist" (a question with no real applicable use))
  8. This morning, I was reading Elder D Todd Christofferson's talk "The Love of God" and was struck with this question and a few others. Why do we love evil? Is it really possible to reject all evil, not out of duty, but out of desire? Can we really live a life of enjoyment by rejecting all evil? This is, obviously, coming from a person who has some sins they enjoy. Overall, like the rich young ruler, I live the gospel very close to the law. However, I am not blind to the many sins I still hold on to. There is a running inside sexual joke my friends and I reference regularly. I enjoy entertainment that swears and uses the Lord's name in vain. I enjoy friendly trash talk, though innocent, sometimes rude things leave my mouth in the name of humor. I wake up early to do scripture study and prepare for the day, but often times I rush through that so I have time to play video games before my kids get up. And though I have lines of content I won't partake in (sexual content, nudity, and amorality), I do play rated M videogames that do have some content that is uncomely of a saint. This is not a post fishing for the gratification of my sins like "Oh, you are doing great Fether! we all have room to grow". Rather, I want to ask, what is the process in taking these weaknesses in character and changing them into strengths?
  9. Birthdays and changing oil. It’s the only good thing about October
  10. Oh of course!!! How could someone have forgotten! I’m use to October being just a waste of a month, nothing exciting at all… but ya, your birthday is by far the most important thing happening
  11. What is so special about October?
  12. There has to be. I remember talking about this is school to, how eventually there has to be a practical application. And I see this trap of going too far being sprung in almost every discussion that involves epistemology. It’s normally the people who are losing or cornered in the discussion that spring it. Its common enough of an event that I imagine there must be a term for it.
  13. I’m looking for a term of some sort that describes this. When you engage in a conversation on a difficult topic, you are bound to enter the realm of philosophy. Philosophy, when in the hands of some, can take the question of “can we really know there is a God? Or do we have to live on faith?” to “What do you mean by know?” and then on to “Can you even know you exist?”. The first being a genuine question with merit. The second being a great qualifier of what the person means. The third being a waste of conversation in a practical world, the utility of the philosophical approach is lost.
  14. Pres. Nelson said that the new temple foundation will take us “into the millennium”. Anyone know how long that foundation is supposed to last before they redo it? Is there city codes that state how often foundations need to be redone?
  15. I’m so excited for my daughters to start having crushes! I was worried I wouldn’t have any girls since girls don’t run in my family nor much in my wife’s family. So far, we are two for three on girls.
  16. I’ve heard this before and I held a similar idea for a while… but I actually disagree entirely now. I think fasting from anything other than food is a poor substitute, A substitute when it is necessary (when pregnant or dealing with physical ailments), but a poor substitute non-the-less. I think those other aspects (living righteously)are expected when fasting, but the fast itself is food and water.
  17. I know this isn’t much of a point to really fight over, mostly because fasting is between you and God, but this age old debate has always confused me. There seemed to be two schools of thought. 1. The “or” signifies one or the other, that they are both different time frames that we can choose from 2. The “or” signifies another way of saying the exact same amount of time the fast ought to last. I have always been under the second assumption, that 2 meals is indeed about a 24 hour period of time… yet I have, in the past, engaged in debates on this topic. Some seem to believe you can skip 2 meals and it be less than 24 hours. If I have breakfast, skip lunch, skip dinner, and eat breakfast… that is 24 hours… right? The only way I can justify the idea that it is two different time frames is if you have breakfast, snack till lunch, skip lunch, skip dinner, then start snacking. Or perhaps eat dinner at 6pm and snack till you go to sleep at 9pm, and then fast till the next day’s dinner at 1pm (which is the pattern I was raised on). Which is a 16 hour fast. Idk… I am not really worried about people cutting their fasts shorter than I feel is appropriate… rather I just don’t like bad arguments and I feel like there is a bad argument here for the first school of thought.
  18. I won’t be because I dont feel it is sabbath appropriate, but that is me. I choose to play video games with my brother on Sunday and I know others dont think that is appropriate. but that is the beauty of the gospel. Ponder on why you are doing it and decide what kind of sign your are showing God. This isn’t one of those “you decide… but if you decide wrong you are sinning”
  19. How does one prepare for conference?
  20. I jokingly commented to my friends Today that we need one of those $150 dr beats hooked up to an amp next to the organist. Just play that piercing DING DING DING DING DING DING for the whole congregation so we can stay on time. For those who are not initiated with the ways of drumline…a guaranteed migraine in 2 minutes
  21. 10 Bpm is bright where you typically start asking “is this too slow?”. For us, 10bpm too slow is best case scenario.
  22. Because I dont know if it is a matter of skill or just not being aware, I am uncomfortable bringing it up. If I knew it was just not being aware, I would absolutely say something
  23. Every hymn that is played in sacrament meeting is consistently at least 10 Bpm slow. Even the most up beat songs become funeral songs. We sang “their is sunshine in my soul today” at 55bpm today. It’s been this way since I moved into the ward. is this something worth bringing up? For me personally, it can be agonizing
  24. I’m sorry… but how does this provide more evidence for the Book of Mormon?
