  1. You would think but just a couple years ago, at the end of a lesson on chastity the newish RS president said something incredibly naive. Something along the lines of not understanding how a wife can be surprised by a husband's porn issue because 'she always knows what her husband is doing'. Just wanted to clarify a bit further.
  2. I don't want to sidetrack but fwiw - obesity is more complicated than people realize. There are many underlying factors that could be at play. I don't know anyone who likes being overweight but they struggle with things the eye can't see so I think some compassion is in order.
  3. What helps me is if I plan to do other things before or after that I'd prefer (ie stop at a store I don't get to very often, swing by the out-of-the-way place for a treat since it's on the way home, etc).
  4. @clbent04 - I commend you for wanting to do something about this and I'm sorry this issue is something you've struggled with. Here's my take: ~ What you (generic) focus on, grows / Focus on what you (generic) want, not on what you don't (ie instead of 'anti-porn leaders' > 'morality coach'). ~ I think parents need to be told flat out how this starts/continues even if it runs the risk of them not liking what they hear. ~ Kids are not given tools to deal with loneliness, self-pity, stress... ~ Kids are not taught about sex so they go looking at the library for info and the world teaches things contrary to what the Church does but since it comes from 'experts'... ~ People need to be told that they are being used by Satan's minions. They don't have have bodies and clamor to use yours to satisfy their appetites. ~ People need to put the promises made by the GA's to the test. There are quotes that say family history work is a protection. Believe them and get busy.
  5. Drove to an area in the path of totality. Will spend a few days checking out the sites and will also find a Krispy Kreme for a special 'eclipsed' donut. You only live once!
  6. Welcome and thanks for checking with members and not just going along with what critics say (wish more would do the same)!! One thing to keep in mind, all proxy ordinances need to be accepted by the person it's done for. They still have their agency to choose and agree to it or not. We're not forcing anyone into anything, we're just making things possible.
  7. @clbent04 - fwiw - I've heard of people being told in their patriarchal blessings that they'll be alive when the Savior comes / live, raise kids during the Millennium. Also, Pres. Nelson said this in a devotional last Jan - "Make no mistake about it—you were born to be a True Millennial." hint hint
  8. That's great! When I was going to go for the first time, my bishop told me to read the Pearl of Great Price.
  9. The new Tucson temple will be dedicated tomorrow and the local members invite the community and put on an event to celebrate. The Church started this tradition several years ago but this is the first time I've heard of it being broadcast.
  10. For those who want to watch it - it's tonight at 7:00 mst - https://www.lds.org/broadcasts/watch/tucson-arizona-temple-cultural-celebration/2017/08?lang=eng
  11. When you buy a missionary car*, they don't try to sell you anything else but wouldn't mind at all if you pulled out the Book of Mormon to read! *highly recommend - below blue book, regular maintenance done, not smoked in...
  12. Another thing, apostles have promised great blessings for those who work on family history (including indexing). Here's just one quote: Elder Bednar testified: “A yearning for connection to our past can prepare an individual to receive the virtue of the word of God and fortify his or her faith. A heart turning to the fathers uniquely helps an individual withstand the influence of the adversary and strengthen conversion.”
  13. I appreciate your honesty and I'm truly sorry about your parents as well your struggles. Besides the church arp that a&a mentioned above, I know there are others. One site that might be helpful is this http://rowboatandmarbles.org/how-a-rowboat-and-a-handful-of-marbles-can-help-mormons-overcome-porn-addiction.html Avoidance is only part of the solution, you need things to fill the void. Maybe you already know that. Anyway, I don't see how not going to church is going to help and that's pretty easy to change so start there.
  14. I think it's so people don't question what he had said in Conference talks, etc since they're still online.
  15. I was never like that (thinking about boys 24/7) and I enjoyed shooting, repelling, skiing (water and snow), etc regardless of what the boys were doing or where they were so you're assumption is false.
  16. It really does sound like you need to talk to someone and I agree with @Sunday about reaching out to the stake pres instead. Going through a little discomfort for a short time is way better than feeling the way you do for a lifetime.
  17. I get what you're saying but an option would be to go to the scriptures online and type in the keyword and then turn to them and mark them. Marking and studying don't have to be done at the same time.
  18. You might want to check google and/or there are some books available (I got the one below years ago). Aside from that, I had an institute teacher suggest that every time you see the word 'remember', mark it in red so it stands out and gets your attention like a red flag. https://www.amazon.com/Marking-scriptures-Suggestions-understanding-using/dp/0877478155
  19. Remembered another one from days gone by but it has a great message - The Greatest - Kenny Rogers
