Chilean reacted to Jane_Doe in Spouse without testimony
(Speaking as an LDS lady married to a inactive generic Christian)

You be a strong woman of God.  You keep your testimony alive and flourishing through prayer, study, and living the Gospel.  Part of this is continuing to honor your martial vows.  You respect and love your husband as he IS-- always remembering Article of Faith #11.  Be a light, and that light will shine naturally without any artificial pressuring your husband into anything.
You didn't mention how your husband views teaching the children.  If he doesn't care, then you teach them.  Show them your love, read the scriptures with them, pray with them, and take them to church.  Yes, I completely know how this can be *hard* when you're doing it without your husband, but remember you are not in this alone-- Christ is beside you.

If you husband has objection to the kids being taught, then that advise would depend on the specific scenario.

Chilean reacted to zil in Telling the truth....when someone asks
Let's say, for the sake of argument that her tendency was to collect stray mice and feed them to her pet snake.  Would she even be asking the question?  IMO, it's not relevant.  In the age of screen readers, speech-to-text, and spelling/grammar checkers, surely she has ways to manage her dyslexia - I mean, is she a successful student?  Dyslexia wouldn't impact employment any more than it would impact formal schooling.
Hopefully she hasn't chosen a career that is explicitly all reading and writing.
Meanwhile, employers aren't allowed to ask about disabilities, nor hire/fire on the basis of them, so to volunteer the info would actually make their lives more difficult.  I submit that not telling them is doing their HR department a favor.  If she's the best person for the job, the dyslexia can be dealt with.
And no, I don't see this as lying - unless someone asks and you deny it - but employers aren't allowed to ask.  If keeping some information back were lying, then we're all liars all day long, because there's not enough time in the day to reveal to every person you meet every fact of your life up until that point.  (Yes, we could now go all techno and discuss the exceptions, when not speaking constitutes a lie, blah blah blah.  I don't think this situation is one of those times.)

Chilean reacted to anatess2 in Education/Home Schooling and Elon Musk
I've been a fan of Elon Musk for a long time.  People like Musk, Jobs, et. al., see a problem and instead of depending on other people to solve the problem, they go and become the solution to the problem.  It's a different mindset, different aptitude, different personality.  And it's definitely not for everybody.
This interview shows exactly the mindset of Elon Musk.  So, his kid starts school and he sees a problem in his education.  He has an idea of how education should be, and instead of going to the school system and working to change them, he goes out and hires a teacher from his kid's school who shares his vision of how education should be and he goes and starts his own school for his kids.   His concept for his school is not new - this is actually what Montessori teaching is all about.  But now the education system for his kids is fully under his control.
What I loved about Musk's interview is his belief that it is not a good idea to teach to the tool as a solution to problems.  Rather, it is best to teach problem-solving.  The juxtaposition he gave is on teaching about engines.  The education system teaches a class on screwdrivers and a class on wrenches as a solution to problems.  What is best is to dedicate the class on taking apart an engine.  An apt student will learn about screwdrivers and wrenches as it becomes necessary in the process of taking an engine apart and putting it back together.  I LOVE THIS.  Because, as the popular saying goes - when all you know is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail.  This is part of what makes me a valuable asset at my job.  I'm a programmer.  I noticed that most, if not all, programming jobs require proficiency in a specific programming language.  This is because most IT shops in the US use specific tools to solve their IT problems.  Even the education system doesn't teach programming, rather, they teach Java or C#, etc.  You might notice this at your workplace - people refer to their Business Analytics System as the "Oracle Server", their Personnel System as "PeopleSoft", etc.  They are focused on the tool rather than the Business Function.  What makes me a valuable asset is that I'm not a "Java Programmer".  I'm simply... a programmer.  I'm not tied to a specific programming language.  You give me the business function or the problem and I'll give you a system using whatever tool is the most efficient in delivering the solution.  So all you have to know is this is your "Business Analytics System" designed to your specific job function... it is not limited to a specific tool or software, so you're not gonna be calling it your "Oracle System".

Chilean reacted to LatterDSaint in My girlfriend is conflicted about serving a mission and marrying me
As Jane Doe bluntly told me which I appreciated, it is not your place to be disappointed or excited about the decision the person you love makes in regards to serving a mission. It is between them and the Lord and I fully recognize this.
I might not have been clear but I am by no means saying to her, "marry  me instead of going on a mission". Whilst she knows full well that my desire is to marry her, I have been supportive of her mission since she told me. Could I be more supportive? Absolutely. But as she told me when we broke up a couple of days ago, she still isnt sure whether she wants to serve a mission and I responded that if she decides that path, it is by no means a prompt for us to get married instead. I dont know what will happen or what the Lord wants me to do yet. Im not sure she does either....
whether she and I verbally admitted this or not, we are both fully aware of this if she does intend to serve and we are both together when she does

Chilean reacted to Vort in Invisibility-pranking children, the Hot New Thing
Apparently, convincing children they're invisible is the greatest new prank. I saw my first video of it last night, and I admit I was (metaphorically) rolling on the floor. I had intended to create this thread with a mock provocative title, something like "Child abuse can be fun!", and linking to one of the videos.
But as often happens in such situations, somewhere between the time I got the idea and the time I created the thread, that analytic voice in my head that loves to suck the life out of silly fun things spoke up. It started asking annoying questions, such as:
"Does it really make sense to laugh at children's credulity? I mean, kids believe in Santa Claus because we tell them so. Do we mock them for that, or laugh at them for believing that some magical, obese philanthropist lives year-round at the north pole with a bunch of elves for slave labor? "Children also believe us when we tell them about God. Same credulous spirit at work. How would we feel about people making fun of children for believing us when we teach them what we consider sacred doctrine? "Some of these children were in serious emotional distress, like screaming and crying. Is it really acceptable to cause children such pain just so we can laugh at the fact that children are child-like? "We are commanded to be child-like. Surely that means that we, like Thomas, should 'be not faithless, but believing'. Is it wise to use (or abuse) such a believing spirit to pull pranks?" So my internal wet blanket asserts itself. I've come to think pretty much the opposite of what I thought last night. I don't think the prank is particularly funny, and I do think it's often taken to damaging extremes. I could see myself pulling such a prank on my own young children -- shame on me! -- but not to the point where they're really bewildered or panicking.
    What does everyone else think?

I don't necessary have a success story to share but I do have mental illnesses myself. It's important to note that you can see and feel the difference in yourself but this isn't something you can easily pass on to someone else - especially perhaps someone you have hurt. It takes time. Mental illnesses are difficult enough to understand and come to terms with when your the one experiencing it so to be completely outside of one, I can only imagine its more difficult to grasp - but not impossible.
Resources will be your friend - booklets, leaflets, websites, doctors for your wife gain information from. Let her ask questions and answer them honestly.
Being married in the temple does not make your marriage immune to struggles - if one or both people do not make the effort (consciously or unconsciously) in the marriage then it will undoubtedly struggle.
Pray, communicate your struggles with heavenly father, ask for his help and guidance. Listen. Read scriptures. Pray that your wife will understand and that you can help her do so. Take every little thing in this to the Lord.

I have some issues I'm dealing with.  The differences between you and me is that I knew I have challenges before I got married, so my husband did as well.  I  realized I had problems when I was still a teen-ager.  I decided to not take medication simply because I preferred to mentally fight a disorder that I know about rather than have that medically dealt with but then end up having to fight a side-effect that I don't know about.  I built some coping mechanisms to help me deal.  My husband is my rock as he supports me in dealing with my issues.  He also shields my children from its effects.  Now that my kids are teen-agers they have become part of my support system.  They may not understand what I go through but they accept me for my weaknesses even as they encourage me to do better and that alone is a big salve to my spirit.
Getting married in the temple SHOULD protect you from things that threaten your marriage.  But, your temple covenant is between you and God.  Your wife has her own covenant with God and she has her free agency.  So, whatever your wife does to her covenant is for her alone.  Your covenant is for you to fulfill and making that covenant in the temple should give you more incentive to keep that covenant.  Therefore, my advice for you is to love your wife with all your heart, mind, and strength, fulfilling your covenant with God.  That love is not conditional, that is, your covenant does not depend on your wife loving you back.  As part of your covenant to love your wife, you can humble yourself before her and make reparations for the pain you have caused her in your struggle to fight your ailment.  Then you can be assured and confident that you did everything in your power to fulfill your covenant.  The rest is up to her.
Good luck and hope things start to look better for you.  Just remember, your disorder is not who you are.  It's just another burden in this thing called life.  Your free agency remains intact and you can choose to have your disorder dictate what you do or you can wrest the reigns and declare yourself Master of your Destiny.  You can do this.  It is a hard road but when life throws you lemons, you can make lemonade.

I have discovered that with practice anything can become easier - either sin or repentance.  The better we get at repentance the more we can move beyond the big things - to the lesser sins.  In life we are taught to start with the low hanging fruit (the easy stuff) but with repentance - it is best to start with the more obvious and debilitating sins.  The more we practice repentance the more we will want to use it with all kinds of sins.
As for practicing sin; I have experienced and observed that as we practice even the most mundane sins - that sinning become so much easier that we can tackle even the most abhorrent sins without hardly batting an eye.

He failed to report a crime, he concealed the crime. He, or anyone, could be charged with accessory after the fact, if he wasn't actually present during the commission of a crime, but took actions to conceal the crime or help the perpetrators avoid capture.
So yes, he is guilty of a crime.

    Officially or unofficially.
Unofficially the gospel has been BROUGHT (if not taught openly as it would be against the law in some of those nations) to them already.  There have been several that were called/instructed on bearing the gospel to many of those countries, though because it cannot be proselytized or taught, they were to be more of an example of how Members were and to build up the church as they could within the confines of the law in those nations.

I've always heard that, that He doesn't know, Only Heavenly Father. Jesus said in the New Testament: “Of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only” (Matthew 24:36).

Yes, and that's why I was asking the question. We know of the signs, and we can see how many of them are happening right now.  I've heard things throughout the years, things that are supposed to happen in the church before he comes, involving the Kirtland temple and Jackson Missouri, but I wonder if maybe those things will take place during the millennium.
Some times I wonder how much worst the world has to get for him to come back.

From the outside looking in everything @Fether says makes sense. I finally got use to using LDS, and felt pretty good about being accurate and respectful. At the same time, as I read the report, President Nelson says he was impressed by the Spirit to encourage this move. So, putting myself in the mind of a member who wants to be missionary in my living, I'd probably start getting real used to saying the full name, as it seems to best convey the unique authority the church believes it carries.

LDS believe that the Spirit testifies of that which is good, and inspires many people (LDS and non).  There is MUCH good in many faiths, and good is always good, wherever it is found.  Now, that being said, LDS also believe that Christ has one church on this earth that is 100% His, and that's the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.   Other churches... while there is much much good, there's also much disagreement and there can only be one pure Truth.
So for an example: Bob is raised atheist discovers Christ is a Baptist church, that's great!  Christ is great and there's many other great things about the Baptist church.  The Spirit can indeed testify to Bob that Christ is the Savior and the Truthfulness of the Bible-- that's Truth!  But the Baptist church doesn't have all Truth, nor does it have Christ's authority as His one true church.  So the hope is that Bob eventually embraces more and more Truth and Christ's one church.  Of course, this may not happen until after Bob's mortal death, which God generously prepared a way for it to happen still.

I will be as clear as I can be.This is what I have found in my research over the last week or so.  There have been thousands and thousands of cases of sexual abuse of Catholic children and adults by priests in many parts of the world. Some priests did it and told their victims to keep it quiet. Some priests threatened their victims. One incident (probably hundreds more) involved the priest instructing  the young girl to go to another parrish to confess. Some priests confessed their own sins at confessional. The priest listening wouldn't tell anyone what they heard. Some didn't tell because they, too, were having sex after taking vows of celibacy. These men may or may not have been sent away to pray and reflect on their sins. The ones that did mostly were found out and eventually reported. Many many priests didn't tell what they knew about others' involvement in sex with children and adults. They didn't tell police which I believe is something that one would do in almost any country of the world, Canon Law or no Canon Law. Nor did they tell their superiors. Many victims were paid off and were made to sign a release saying the Catholic church held no responsibility.  This all is a cover up!! It's blatant. It's intentionally hiding something that is abhorrent in the sight of God. It was rampant many years ago. A large part of the church have responded to the new reforms put in place around 2002 and it has helped a lot. But the sad thing is that the victims (from before the reforms) lives were ruined in many cases and no one from the church was there to help them.  Who could even calculate how many are still out there.
I hate to say this but in many ways, this is a pedophile ring- within the Catholic Church. Another sad fact is that there is similar but perhaps not as widespread abuse in other churches, too. When I hear about this I feel such a pit of despair in my stomach for humanity.
Now, I'm not trying to give the Catholic church a black eye. As I said before, some of my Catholic friends are the loveliest people I know. It's the Catholic members who are spitting mad at their leaders, who are shouting from the rooftops that they have been lied to, hurt, robbed, etc. . That's why what I have read on this forum seems so unbelievably opposite to what is out there. If there is any group effort to change the church , it's coming from it's own members. Not the US government, not liberals who want to take down Kavanaugh or Trump, not the media. It's the victims and the mothers of these poor kids and the families of parents who are still dealing with the aftermath of the abuse decades later.
Does the cover-up and lack of accountability go all the way up to the pope? I hope not. I want to trust that he's a really good and honest man. But I just don't know.  I guess we'll see over the next while.

Would you live riotously up until a few years before his coming, then try to repent? Would you make large stock market buys or sells, or engage in speculative real estate purchases in Jackson County, Missouri?
I submit that knowing the day and hour of the Lord's coming would not make even a particle of difference in our behaviors, or if it did, that just shows that we don't have the faith and testimony we need -- all the more reason not to know such things.

We are informed that the Lord will come as a thief in the night, and will probably come during a time when people are saying he isn't coming. It wouldn't shock me if the Lord's return was in our day; although, we have many prophecies which still need to be fulfilled. The most important one is that Zion will be built, and we are not quite there yet. There are other prophecies which still need to be fulfilled also, and we are not quite there yet.
Word of note, do we truly believe that Christ (who is one with the Father, and is God), who has seen the end from the beginning, doesn't know when he is coming?
The best answer I could provide as to when Christ is coming is the following, "Christ is coming tomorrow, so let us be prepared for the morrow when he comes."
