Right now, the United States comic book industry is in a de facto civil war.

On one side, you have the mainstream comic book industry. Marvel. DC. IDW. Archie. Dark Horse. Image. A large number of mid-tier and vanity houses. All of them have become divorced from reality, with "woke" writers, artists, and editors putting message over even making money and generally making a hash of once-valued and cherished franchises.

On the other side, you have the vox populi. These are writers, artists, indie houses, and fans of all ages who are sick of being told "We're making this, so you'd better like it or you're a Nazi" by the mainstream industry. Large swaths of people are voting with their wallets, abandoning these corrupt establishment houses in favor of foreign publishers, indie publishers, and publishers of non-traditional fare who they feel are more responsive to what the public is after and who they feel are providing material more in the classic spirit of the art.

    The end result?

Japanese titles like "My Hero Academia" and "Spy X Family" are massive smash hits in the United States despite being PG-13 at best.

Graphic novel series like "Dog Man" and "Captain Underpants" are making more money individually than many mainstream comic book publishers are.

High-profile indie creators like Richard C. Meyer, Ethan Van Sciver, Eric July, and Nerd Wonder can easily clear half a million on crowd-funding projects.

The Comicsgate consumer revolt movement is now more racially, ethnically, and religiously diverse than many of the mainstream houses that proclaim their commitment to diversity.

IDW is on death watch after its stock was de-listed from the New York Stock Exchange.

    Et cetra.

If enough people are willing to rise up and say "No, I don't want it, and you're a fascist for trying to force me to want it", and these people are willing to hold their ground, then it *will* add up over time and begin forcing the culture to change accordingly.

After years and years of banking money, these companies can afford to show their true colors and push "the message" over profits. The adversary doesn't really need any more money...he as as much as he needs to further his mission. Same thing in hollywood - all they need to do is have 2-3 big hit movies each year, and affords them the breathing room to have a bunch of garbage films that appease the hokey pokey wokies.

Sadly, comics and other forms of sci-fi are not what they were when I was a kid...and that wasn't very long ago.

Why should any animal be forced to live in any environment other than what it was designed by G-d for?

    The Traveler

It's hard to clean much from one sentence, but do you believe God designed these types of cats to be indoor animals only? Ours have never shown any desire to come inside. They only meow at the door morning and evening for food if they didn't catch any themselves. Should I force them to come in and be uncomfortable?

What about all types of animals you see on a farm...am I under condemnation for having my chickens penned up? Anyone who has a horse or cattle needs to let them go and run free I guess. Can kids no longer have pet goldfish or ant farms? Your statement also seems to imply that you are opposed to zoo's as well.

Hi, @scottyg I’m Gator. Nice to meet you.

I hate cats and while I can’t stop you from doing this I think it’s cruel to leave them outside at night. Very cruel actually

Out of curiosity, why cruel? Do you feel any kind of animal should be left outside?

  4. I have never met anyone who had a problem with cats being out at night. Ours have never once slept indoors. I might hear one or two cat-fights each summer, but they all do a pretty good job marking their territory and steering clear of confrontation.

Never had anyone be bothered by someone else's cat and never had any animals harmed by them either. They do get a lot of fun out of chasing chickens around though, and one of ours loves to sleep in their nesting boxes. Ours do a great job of catching starlings and mice, and our neighbors without cats appreciate that as they stopped having mice too once we got cats.

  5. The church leadership needs to open their eyes, and realize they need to be more actively involved with all 3 universities. Those they trusted to be in charge of them have proven time and time again that they are putting their own foolish desires and activism over the gospel.

In their defense, it's hard to know who you can trust. Just because someone is a member of the church doesn't mean they want to see it succeed.

This is the first time - that I recall - that an Apostle has been formally (publically) released from their "duties" while still alive.  I recall that President Benson suffered greatly and that his son left the Church because President Benson what unable to fulfill his duties but was not released.

I personally, did not see any problem because a prophet is not a prophet in and of themselves but rather have the mantal of the prophet given to them according to the keys of the priesthood.  That the same keys are held by the quorum of the first presidency and also by the quorum of the 12 Apostles.

I am grateful for all our general authorities that serve at great sacrifice and cost to themselves.  I have been dumbfounded and amazed by those that criticize the brethren and others for their callings – thinking such service is somehow fed by ambition for power and authority and therefore should be enjoyed by all classes of individuals seeking such power and authority.  No oen needs to be called to make sacrifices – especially that of a broken heart and contrite spirit.

    The Traveler

Where did it say he was "released" from anything? The statement simply said he is excused from meetings and assignments while he recovers. This happens all the time as the GA's have surgery, family issues, or slow down from advanced age. The only reason a formal announcement was made in this case was because he had several public appearances already planned over the next few months that had previously been announced to the media. In normal cases, we don't hear about their health, and public assignments like speaking at a university commencement, or spiritual ones like dedicating a temple just aren't made.

  7. Here is a link to the recently discovered information. https://babylonbee.com/news/testicular-injuries-skyrocketing-among-women-athletes

How can they not know what is causing this? You're an MD...does your in-depth medical training lead you to any possible conclusions as to why this terrible spike in injuries amongst athletes is occurring?

What's worse is that this comes out during women's history month. It's just terrible that we aren't helping our women athletes more...

  8. Our ward boundary changed about 3 years ago to include a large senior living community. Our primary went from 50-60 kids to about 20 kids now...if everyone comes. Both our YM and YW combined have 16 kids, 10 YM and 6 YW...and not all are active. When it comes to active Melchizedek priesthood holders that have a family and own their own home, I am one of two in his 30's, and there are only 5 in their 40's. There are 3 other young couples/singles with small kids, but they all live at home with their parents. Over 85% of our priesthood brethren are over the age of 50, and 2/3 are over age 60. Same goes for relief society, we have less than 10 sisters under age 50 in our ward. Within the next 10 years our ward boundaries will have to be changed as we will not have enough members physically able to serve in a ward. In 6 years we will only have 3 kids primary age. In 15 years 50% of our ward could be dead...and they will be replaced with more seniors.

    Bingo.

Again, my MIL's words are becoming ever more prophetic.

    https://vtdigger.org/2023/03/13/vermont-religious-school-that-refused-to-play-team-with-trans-player-banned-from-sporting-events/

A Christian K-12 school is now expelled from competing in the league with other high schools because the girls' volleyball team decided to forfeit a match against a school with a trans (biological male) athlete.  They figured they'd just finish the year in whatever place they wound up if they didn't play against that particular team.  Instead, they were completely expelled from further competition.

Instead of lawsuits like the liberals do, the conservative tactic has usually been a Biblical one: Turn the other cheek (in the gentler sense, not the defiant sense).  I'd suggest a different approach.

Private schools like Christian schools ought to make their own leagues.  They would form alliances with other schools with similar values.  Everyone is happy.  It would take some time for trans students to make their way in to tear that down as well.

The inevitable result, however, of separate leagues is that we're furthering the divide between right & left.  The national divorce is the final destination.  But none of us know what that would look like.  We have the Roman Empire as a model.  But the rights enshrined in the Constitution indicate that there is more at stake here than just different borders and different politicians.

Hopefully a national divorce doesn't happen as it did with the Nephites and Lamanites in 4 Nephi, but the sifting will continue, and sides will be taken. Very soon the days will be gone when folks could get by just sitting on the sidelines.

    • A while ago, we came across H5N1 which was an avian flu that affected our poultry population and costs.
    • Recently, the government has mandated entire flocks/factory farms to kill their entire bird population because of one "suspected" case.
    • In the past, they were wondering how people would be affected if the disease mutated to be able to infect humans.
    • Today, they are saying that we now have a human version/mutation with a 50% mortality rate among humans. (This is based on fewer than 1000 known human cases to date).

This has the potential to be the thing that kills half the population.  But the WHO and the CDC has lost all credibility.  So, when they raise an alarm like this (which may very well be true) how are we supposed to believe them?  How are we supposed to trust that we should rationally/logically give up our rights, our living, our social existence because "they said so"?

If they had only handled COVID more honestly, rationally, and accurately, then their credibility would be such that this 50% alarm would be taken seriously.  But with their track record, we have a population that is ready to just blow it off and possibly allow this virus to kill 50% of our population.

I don't blame that result on "stupid conservatives" who refuse to listen to experts.  I blame it on unelected bureaucrats who have cried wolf in the biggest most public manner that their (possibly valid) alarm will fall on deaf ears.

I truly fear that in the coming years we will have a "boy who cried wolf" situation, and for those who read scripture, it will likely align with more financial crises, as well as wars of various kinds. Things are going to get bad, and we need to prepare our households in more ways than one.

    Bank News in brief:

    • Biden has said there is nothing to worry about.  Everything is fine.  The "Bank Failure" contagion has been contained.
    • Biden blamed the lack of oversight due to the roll-back under Trump.  And that condition has not been changed  But the problem is fixed.
    • The official word is that they were too risky in their investments into crypto & commodities.  Crypto collapsed.  No idea which commodities we're talking about.
    • Conservatives are saying that they are failing because they're investing based on ESG principles rather than sound economic principles.  (SVB had an "A" rating for ESG).

They definitely were a very liberal "woke" bank, and didn't pick good commodities, but they also invested way too much money in long-term bonds. Only an idiot buys bonds when interest rates are at or near zero...because interest rates have nowhere to go but up, which means the bonds will be worth less.

It bothers me how our banking system is run.  From my understanding banks only hold 10% or less in liquid funds in their total reserves so if many people come demanding their money it will collapse the bank.  They should be required to have at least 40% in funds available just in case a lot of people take their money out of the bank in my opinion.  But they are banks, lords of the financial system, and not subject to the common law like we the common people.

Your average local bank that doesn't deal with large hedge funds and the ultra wealthy does have between 30-40% of funds available in fairly liquid forms. Still not enough to cover everyone if a rush was to occur, but better than 10%. Silicon Valley Bank didn't have many average Joe customers, but hopefully the few they did have will be covered by insurance.

Those millionaires who were knowingly playing with risky investments get what they deserve...which is unfortunately a part of playing that kind of risky game. Also, putting your money into a woke corporation that hires executives based off of gender, sexual preference, and skin color rather than knowledge, experience and education is foolish. Even though hindsight is 20/20, they really didn't plan well at all, and some of the info that is leaking out about them is embarrassing.

I just went to the Korean market for the first time in about 6 months.  We've been rather high on work and short on cash lately.

    • Kim chee has nearly doubled in price since the last jar I bought.
    • Food at their food court has gone up about 30% to 40%.
    • Ginseng:
      • Two of the most common versions of ginseng tea are not available. It's all being gobbled up by South Korea.  And they haven't had shipments of it to the US in a VERY long time.
      • The more expensive stuff is there.
        • Prices have not changed.  Demand has dwindled a bit.  But they still need to make a profit.
    • Their stuffed rice sweet cakes are about 20% higher.
    • Ramen has gone up about 30%.

    Yup, we're seeing inflation alright.

Our local Asian market has ramen up almost 40%, and almost doubled the price of their sauces and citrus juices like Yuzu. And don't get me started on the price increase of Mochi and Almond Cookies.

Do you know if your wife ever prayed for a 4th child?

She says she didn't, and was actually happy at the thought of never being pregnant again. Never had nausea or odd food cravings, but also had very little energy while pregnant alongside terrible back pain and uterine cramps. When she got pregnant again she was actually quite depressed for several weeks.

I'm not saying that any of these particular conditions apply to what happened to @scottyg, althought they might. I'm just putting them forth as examples of when it seems as if the Lord appears to have changed His mind. It seems as if some of these appearance of change have come about as a result of something that somebody did, ie, the Lord seems to be reacting to the faith and pleas of His children.

This is true. Sometimes we only receive blessings if we ask for them. And such things can over time have great impacts, and change the course of our lives. God knows what would happen either way, but we get to choose. Perhaps something occurred in the space of a few years that changed the course of our family, and altered the impression that I originally had. What that would be I do not know, but I do know that God cannot lie. So if my impression was real, He would have a valid explanation as to why things turned out different...and I look forward to hearing His answer one day.

Ideally, a good test mirrors as closely as possible the future operating environment, and to the extent that it does not, the validity of the testing process comes into question.

I will try to find the reference, but I remember one of the Latter-day prophets saying that the next life will mirror in many ways what we are doing on earth now...but without sin holding us back we can participate in greater forms and/or levels of learning, creation, joy, etc...

Agency (defined spiritually) is choosing Christ over the things of this world, and many circumstances will arise throughout our lives that will try our faith in various ways. Staying true to the Lord will ultimately bring the best possible blessings for us and our families.
