DennisTate reacted to OnePassenger in Does Multiverse Theory fit with Ezekiel 37 and the White Throne Judgment?
I will have to read a bit more on this subject, also about the author mentioned. However, I'm always very sceptical about those near-death experiences - they might be symptoms of a near-death psychosis or a temporary state of paranoia.

DennisTate got a reaction from prisonchaplain in A Latter day Saint near death experiencer explains the denominations of Christianity.
There is a fascinating near death experience account by a Christian.... .
about a Muslim friend being in heaven.... because he accepted Messiah Issa - Jesus - Yeshua in the final moments of his life while a zealous Christian friend of his did NOT make it into heaven.... because she refused to forgive her friends who did not visit her in the hospital while she was sick........
This principle is logical... and fits with many scriptures.....
and can increase our fear of G-d.

There have been accounts of Muslims in the Middle East having visions of Jesus. They listen, because Islam teaches that Jesus is a prophet of God. Jesus tells them He is the Son of God, and because they've been prepared to listen to a prophet, they now have to wrestle with what that prophet has said. Many end up converting to Christianity. Had they not been Muslim, such a vision might not have had the same result.

Well, LDS claim to have the fullness of the Gospel, but not an exclusivity on truth.

DennisTate reacted to Just_A_Guy in The Prophet and all Apostles will attend Rome Dedication
Shouldn’t there be a “designated survivor”? I’m not at all certain, theologically, that the First and Second Quorums of the Seventy have the keys to re-constitute the Twelve if they should all die simultaneously. (The Twelve could confer them at any time, I suppose; but historically I'm not sure such a conferral has ever actually happened.)

This is just amazing. https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900059369/entire-first-presidency-quorum-of-the-twelve-to-attend-rome-temple-dedication-mormon.html
The last time this occured was at the Nauvoo Dedication in 2002 and before that at the LA Temple Dedication in 1956. Very historic times for the Church.

DennisTate reacted to Aish HaTorah in Churches and Synagogues--Same Role?
For us, the Shabbat is the holiest of days...even more so than Yom Kippur...because it is the only day (or Feast of the L-rd) that is mentioned in the Ten Commandments. In other words, we believe that it is a day set apart for all people, not just Jews. We look at the Shabbat with reverence for creation and the Creator. It is a line of demarkation between the sacred and the profane, the things of the Divine, and the day to day.
Thank you for helping me understand that.

DennisTate reacted to Midwest LDS in Churches and Synagogues--Same Role?
You're welcome! I've always admired the reverence and dedication Jews show to the Lord through their Sabbath Day observance. Thank you for sharing your beliefs on the subject.

Thank you so kindly for your thoughtful response. As I read it, it made me think of something I've been meaning to ask of you or any Christian who cares to respond.
Why do you suppose the Church changed the Shabbat being on Saturday (Friday sunset to Saturday sunset) as directed by Scripture to Sunday instead?
-
DennisTate reacted to Aish HaTorah in Churches and Synagogues--Same Role?
For the sake of conversation...
...May I ask you: Is the purpose of your church (individually or collectively) the same as that of the synagogue? Has this changed over time, or does it remain the same? I am referring, specifically, the the local warehouse (or the idea of warehouses, collectively) and not the larger mission of LDS evangelism, etc.
Let me give you an overview of the synagogue as well as synagogue life so that you may better assess what similarities and differences they may have with your warehouse. (I sincerely hope that I am using that term--wardhouse--correctly. It didn't seem right to say "building."
Even before the destruction of the Second Temple, perhaps even in early Biblical days, there were already rudimentary synagogues in ancient Israel. It clearly became the central institution for the cultivation of the faith during the Babylonian captivity. The restoration under Nehemiah and Ezra left a large Jewish Diaspora outside the Holy Land, and that Diaspora increased in succeeding ages. Its central institution was the synagogue. Here the Jews gathered to pray together, but that was not its most important function. The mitzvah (commandment) to pray, we believe, is incumbent upon every individual Jew, three times a day--morning, afternoon, and evening--and there is relatively little difference in the prescribed order of prayer between the service as said in public in the synagogue and the version of it that is prescribed for the individual.
The central function of the synagogue is to cultivate a value perhaps more important than prayer to Jewish faith--study of the Torah. On Shabbat (the Sabbath) as well as on festivals (Feasts of the L-rd) people gather in the synagogue to hear a reading of a passage from Torah and to be led in the understanding of its interpretation. This is enshrined in the central act of public worship in Judaism on every major occasion. The Scroll of the Torah, which is written in prescribed ancient form by hand on parchment made of the skin of a (kosher) animal, is taken from the Ark and an appropriate section is read. On the Shabbat, the cycle of readings from the Torah comprises a consecutive reading of the Five Books of Moshe in the course of the Sabbaths of the year. A complementary section from Prophets, known as the Haftarah, is also read on Shabbat and Festivals.
The synagogue is a Beit K'nesset (House of Assembly), a Beit Tefilah (House of Prayer), and a Beit Midrash (House of Study).
How do you see the building in which you worship? I know that it is an important gathering place for you. Do you see it functioning in the same way? Are there differences?
Thank you kindly! Shalom, shalom.

DennisTate reacted to SpiritDragon in Sabbath day vs the Lord's day
Hey team,
I was just having a conversation with some colleagues about scriptural interpretation and found it interesting how some (not jews or adventists) thought that the bible clearly teaches that Saturday is the Sabbath... some even accepting that Sunday is the Lord's day, but still maintaining Saturday as the Sabbath for being observed and set apart out of the week for worship.
While I was looking into it I found this video with John Piper explaining the Lord's day to give one side that makes sense to me, but I also found other sources clearly differentiating between the two. So I wanted to hear from the great people here (specifically those who are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) what your thoughts on the Sabbath are. Do you sanctify and/or worship on Saturday or Sunday and why?
Thanks in advance.

DennisTate reacted to mikbone in Who is your Satan?
While we were discussing this weeks Come, Follow Me; we discussed Satan, his intent and personality.
No doubt he is a troubled and interesting character. He must charismatic, extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and a sociopath.
But I don't see him as a whiny car salesman...
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” ― Sun Tzu, The Art of War
In my mind Satan's character is a mix between Al Pacino character in The Devil's Advocate.
And C.S. Lewis's Screwtape.

Grateful am I in Your presence, Almighty G-d, who lives and endures,
for You have returned my soul to me with compassion.
Abundant is Your faith.
In these still, quiet moments
I am not asleep,
and not yet awake.
In the threshold of day and night,
with the mixture of darkness and light,
my body is once again coming to life.
I am reborn, each day,
from the womb of Your compassion.
May all of my actions
be worthy of the faith You have placed in me.
With words of thanks I’ll greet the dawn.

DennisTate reacted to wenglund in A suggestion on how LDS membership can surge?
I wonder why the Savior of the world didn't think of that when he established his 1st century church as well as his restored church in these latter days?
I suspect it has something to do with NDE's not being all that relevant, let alone authoritative, to the saving plan of God, regardless of how interesting and popular they may be--though podcast of gamers, like PewDiePie, number in the tens of millions, but that doesn't mean the Church should follow suit.
I suspect also that this post, as well as earlier posts, may be your round-about way of drumming up interest in your pet cause. If so,, it treads precariously close to violating board rules.
Thank,s -Wade Englund-

DennisTate reacted to Fether in More struggles with Direction from stake President
@carlimac
Im not one to disobey leadership, but I’m also not one to take the word of a stake president over the word of the entire church.
https://www.lds.org/youth/article/what-are-we-doing-at-mutual?lang=eng
If he wants all activities ended, I would approach him with this and say “I’m just trying to do what the Prophets and Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints want me to do”
...maybe a bit less guilty-tripy... but you get the point
I am all for respect, but don’t bow to direction that isn’t supported higher up.
SIDE NOTE: That is IF all your saying is true. If you just misinterpreted his direction or are embellishing things, then maybe take a different direction. But either way I would approach him and let him know your concerns and share with him that link I posted above.

DennisTate reacted to Vort in More struggles with Direction from stake President
Well, since you're addressing a mostly anonymous group of Saints and non-Saints spread across the world who do not know your stake president personally, I feel perfectly free to give my irrelevant opinion, for all the vast good it might do. And here it is:
Sustain your stake president. If he feels that the young women should do only specifically Christ-centered activities, then go with that. Don't complain or murmur. Encourage your daughters in it. See if you can be instrumental in bringing about the stake president's vision.

DennisTate reacted to carlimac in More struggles with Direction from stake President
I just want to throw this out there to see what you think.
We have a very spiritual and meticulous stake president. I fully believe he wants the best for all in the stake. I think he loves us. He says he does but...this keeps coming up and I don't know what to do with it.
Last night at a stake auxiliary training and leadership conference he came into the Young Women break out session and said, " We have been told in the scriptures and by our church leaders to "not go beyond the mark". I looked that up on LDS.org and found a few references. Didn't read the whole conference talks or whatever to find the exact quote but the gist I came away with was that we are to keep things simple and forgo all the elaborate, showy stuff we (especially women) get caught up in as we serve in our callings. ( I think this is what some women just do by nature in and out of the Church. We are prone to decorate and entertain by nature. ) But our stake president has interpreted it differently. He thinks it means we should NOT be doing anything at all beyond enriching our knowledge and "relationship" with our Savior. So last night (2nd time I've heard him say this in the last month) he said that ALL our mutual activities should be centered around Christ. This isn't a bad thing except , I quote, " all these things that we keep doing like having spa nights and playing board games are a waste of time. They are going beyond the mark of learning about Christ." OK this kind of jars me because-1) I think he's interpreting this saying in his own way and 2) I feel hes' really out of touch with what the youth, and especially the young women need.
He's known to be a very controlling person, extremely disciplined AND only has one child- a 13 yr old daughter. He is very invested in what she does at every activity ( they are in our ward.) I used to be the Beehive leader but thankfully have been moved to be secretary. So I don't have to worry anymore about the very picky stake president judging me for the activities we would do at mutual with his daughter. But I'm still involved and I see this rigid attitude toward youth activities being detrimental to them.
I have two daughters of my own in Young Women. I've raised three others. They have so much pressure in high school right now!!! They are losing sleep to get up and go to seminary at 5:30 every day. They hear the same lessons over and over every year and every week at church. They supposedly have scripture reading with their family every night and now will have even more gospel study with families on Sundays ( if they happen to have a family that wants to do this.) I feel very strongly that they need some down time with their like minded and same believing pals at mutual. They need to play and chill and interact and have a spa night if that brings them closer to each other and builds friendship and love.
Thoughts?

DennisTate reacted to cathyyg in Manner of Prophesying Among the Jews
In Judaism, prophets are not seen as predicting the future. Their role is speaking truth to power, particularly the ruler. They are the check and balance against corruption and sin, by making it public and holding them accountable to HaShem for their actions. Sin has consequences, as we see going back to the Song of Moses in Deuteronomy, and continuing on. But those are potentialities, not predictions, for teshuva by the ruler and the people can alter those consequences.
