Cathyyg could you explain to us what the days of awe are?  What kind of activities do you plan?  What kind of a meal do you have?  I love learning more about our brothers and sisters of the Jewish faith.

My September calendar of religious holidays only!

Thank you so much.  That was so interesting.
There is a company that I do business with frequently that is operated by people of the Jewish faith.  They close for all Jewish holidays.  They even close when the Jewish Sabbath starts which includes shutting down the option to purchase anything from their website.  I have a high respect for people that practice their faith above the bottom dollar.  I have noticed that they are closed much more in September.

DennisTate reacted to cathyyg in What is the Talmud?
Warning, liberal Jewish thought to follow!
The Talmud is the work of rabbis, not prophets nor HaShem. (The Name, meaning the name of God) As such, it suffers from all the errors of men elevating their personal prejudices to religious dogma. That does not make it worthless. You have to interpret it in the light of the time when it was written, and the socio-cultural norms of the time. Yes, there are some horribly offensive things in there. Usually, those are hypothetical situations presented to help clarify what the law is, and how to apply that law.
Assuming the few mentions of Yeshua in the Talmud refer to Jesus is problematic, because the time frame the rabbis place that person in is over a century off from the time of the Christian Jesus, if he existed.
  6. Thanks
DennisTate reacted to cathyyg in What is the Talmud?
Oh, and as for it being the religion of Jesus, certainly not. The Talmud is a foundational document of rabbinic Judaism, not biblical Judaism. Rabbinic Judaism is the ultimate success of Pharisaic Judaism, which filled the political-religious vacuum left after the destruction of the Temple. The Talmud was not even begun to be written until 90AD, at Yavneh.
My rabbi told me that Jesus preached standard Pharisaic thought, which is only mostly true. He did follow the Law then prevalent, but not all the Pharisaic stringencies. For example, Pharisees would only share meals with other Pharisees.

It is the time of year to repent, to seriously consider whether we are following our Yetzer Tov or allowing our Yetzer Hara to sway our actions. Who have we wronged? Make a list, because you need to ask forgiveness from them, not HaShem, and make restitution.

While there isn’t a ban in this subforum on discussing parallels between Jewish and Christian/Latter-day Saint practice (and indeed, we’d love to encourage that sort of discussion); as a matter of courtesy it’s not a bad idea to keep things relatively close to the topic the original poster first originated.  There’s a fine line between thread drift and thread jacking, and we may be flirting with it a bit.

DennisTate reacted to anatess2 in Moving the US Israeli Embassy
I'm not sure how the US embassy helps in this regard.  I've always felt that the temple in Jerusalem would be a product of conversion of the people of Jerusalem to the restored gospel.  At this point in time, I don't see yet how that is possible when we're still having to face the problem of bringing those people to a peaceful existence.  I'm thinking that an Israeli-Palestine cultural upheaval is the only way things can head to peaceful coexistence in Jerusalem.  Anything the US does will not change much unless such actions lead to this cultural upheaval.  What's your opinion on this matter?

    Wow!!!!
I am so glad that I found this forum! AMEN!!!!!!
On this note..... I would like to apologize for buying into the idea that my old church..... was superior to yours!
Because we attempted to observe the weekly Jewish Sabbath, the annual Jewish Sabbaths, avoid pork and other meats.......
and had some pretty good ideas on hidden meaning in many Jewish Holy Day rituals........  we members of the Worldwide Church of God became very proud......
and convinced of our own superiority.
Beginning especially around 1990 Messiah Yeshua - Jesus answered my prayers for correction....... and wisdom......
and He led me to see error, after error, after error in my own supposed understanding of scripture..... in my case near death experience accounts were used to
correct many of my total fowl ups on the meaning of much of the Jewish and Christian scriptures.
Our sin of pride.... took us very, very, very close to...... (if not over the line of)...... "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" which the Scribes and Pharisees
were playing around with by accusing Messiah Yeshua - Jesus of doing miracles by the power of Baalzebub!

DennisTate reacted to MaryJehanne in Is the Catholic concept of Purgatory more accurate than heaven vs hell?
Thank you! As far as I can see from looking him up, Mr. Joyner is Protestant, but I don't think he was ever Catholic!
Hearing about near death experiences and personal visions can be helpful in strengthening a person's faith and opening their eyes to the miraculous nature of God's dealings with us on earth, however, it's important to be very careful of these, especially ones that are "visions" that pop up amidst everyday circumstances or that come from dreams.

In evaluating a vision, whether a near-death experience or other, there are two major categories they can fall into: True and False.
If they fall within the "false" category, there are three sub-possibilities:
    1. The vision was an illusion, caused by faulty natural phenomena, such as brain damage.
    2. The vision was a lie.
    3. The vision was created by malevolent angels (demons), who have the ability to cause illusions (auditory/visual/tactile/etc.), to appear to human beings, to cause impressive unnatural phenomena, and to influence dreams.

With all these options, it goes against the law of probability that all visions are true, as is apparent when some visions, whether we can tell they are true or not, contradict each other. If two contradict each other, that means one is correct and the other is false, or they both are false.
Of course, when looking at these claims, I can evaluate them based on the Catholic Church to prove to myself the likelihood of whether they're true or not (such as the fact that this vision seems to be trying to argue against the existence of Hell, which is what outer darkness refers to, by claiming it's temporary; the point where the vision mentions "growing in ability to understand," which seems strange since Heaven is the Beatific Vision, in which we are united to God; and the part where the visions says only God and Christ are worshipped, with no mention of the Third Person, the Holy Spirit.), which won't be convincing for most on this forum, I know, since they're not Catholic!
It's a huge, universal warning sign, though, if a vision is very flattering to the person promulgating it, which I believe this account is, even when claiming he's "humbled" while knowing how positive his humility is (or should be), in a sort of prideful humility. There is nothing in this vision that is meant to be truly negative about him, with even his "foolish thoughts" not seeming very bad.
"That mantle is the highest rank of honor, and it is why they all bowed to you while you passed."
"I did not notice anyone bowing to me," I replied, a bit disconcerted.
"It is not improper," he continued. "Here we show each other the respect that is due. Even the angels serve us here, but only our God and His Christ are worshiped."
"I was still ashamed. I had to retrain myself to keep from bowing to these glorious ones, while at the same time wanting to hide myself because I looked so bad."

Anyway... I think near-death experiences can be good, but anything positive found in visions can be found in the already-existing doctrine and writings of the Church (although I know this differs from the LDS belief). I frequently read about Sr. Faustina's encounters with God, but these do not differ from or substantially add to His previous instructions to us. Divine Mercy is not a new concept, He's just further emphasizing it. Likewise, Fatima taught nothing new, just brought awareness to what was already known and emphasized the need for action. Because the idea of visions can be impressive and sensational, false visions can be used to attract and mislead people. I hope I'm not being too brazen in this post or anything, I just wanted to comment that it's always good to be cautious and aware of these encounters and to realize that they're only supplements to God's Truth!
    God bless!

The High Holy Days are nearly here. Now is the time to complain about ticket prices, for those whose tickets are not included in synagogue membership, or who lack synagogue membership. I am ready to hear the shofar! I am planning my big dinner already.
Anybody got any suggested reading as we head into the Days of Awe?
The Central Synogogue in New York livestreams their services - they are Reform, after all - but it is a great option for attending services if you can't make it to a service in person.
