  1. Study this: https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1988/04/the-great-commandment-love-the-lord?lang=eng Personal Inspiration should align with teaching of the modern-day prophets and the Standard Works.
  2. BJ64 explains my understanding of the Plan of Salvation.
  3. Rob, I agree with your understanding. I think "salvation" in the scriptures is often interpreted as exaltation or a lesser form of glory. Only the sons of perdition will not receive some type of "salvation." To receive exaltation we must accept the Savior completely through obedience to all the laws and ordinances of the gospel; this will take more then this mortal life, but we place ourselves in a position to continue to progress in a kingdom based on what we do in this life with the knowledge we receive. The ultimate desire and purpose of God the Father and God the Son is for all of us to be "saved"/exalted to live with and be like Them.
  4. My understanding from extensive study and pondering of Alma, D&C 76, D&C 138, and teachings of modern-day prophets (particularly President Kimbal, President Benson, President Nelson; President Joseph F. Smith; President Joseph Fielding Smith; President Lee.) is thus: 1. The choices we make in mortality (now) have consequences. If we reject making and keeping covenants that are available in this life our choices and consequences are limited after mortality. We may progress within a kingdom, but we cannot progress from one kingdom to another. If we have not had the opportunity to make and keep the exalting ordinances of the Temple in mortality, we will have the opportunity after death. The Temple ordinances and covenants are for the living and (for the dead who have not had the opportunity.) 2. Someone who has made the exalting covenants cannot receive exaltation unless they are true and faithful to those covenants. It seems illogical for someone who has made the sacred Temple covenants to then chose to marry outside the Temple or marry a non-member with the idea that one's covenants can save their spouse when they have chosen to marry outside the covenant. As Paul has counseled, a believing spouse can help save their non-believing spouse; I believe Paul's counsel is directed to a married couple who have not heard of the gospel. But, it seems counter to the law of agency and logic for a covenant member to chose to marry outside the faith with the "expectation" that they can/will "save" their unbelieving spouse; one cannot serve two masters. 3. Choices have consequences. Agency equals responsibility. We are responsible for the "light and knowledge" we receive; it is mocking God to receive light and knowledge then chose not to honor that light and knowledge through obedience - which allows includes repentance. President Nelson said during his final address of the April 2018 conference: "Eventual exaltation requires our complete fidelity now to covenants we make and ordinances we receive in the house of the Lord." I appreciate the civil discussion.
  5. I think there is a big difference between a couple receiving exaltation depending on if the husband and/or wife have chosen baptism, and particularly the endowment, before or after marriage. Agency = accountability
  6. I think Section 76 offers perspective on repentance after death: 71 And again, we saw the terrestrial world, and behold and lo, these are they who are of the terrestrial, whose glory differs from that of the church of the Firstborn who have received the fulness of the Father, even as that of the moon differs from the sun in the firmament. 72 Behold, these are they who died without law; 73 And also they who are the spirits of men kept in prison, whom the Son visited, and preached the gospel unto them, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh; 74 Who received not the testimony of Jesus in the flesh, but afterwards received it. 75 These are they who are honorable men of the earth, who were blinded by the craftiness of men. 76 These are they who receive of his glory, but not of his fulness. 77 These are they who receive of the presence of the Son, but not of the fulness of the Father. 78 Wherefore, they are bodies terrestrial, and not bodies celestial, and differ in glory as the moon differs from the sun. 79 These are they who are not valiant in the testimony of Jesus; wherefore, they obtain not the crown over the kingdom of our God. 80 And now this is the end of the vision which we saw of the terrestrial, that the Lord commanded us to write while we were yet in the Spirit.
  7. I think we understand the doctrine the same; howbeit, how we express it might differ. The Iron Rod is the Word of God - one of the multitude of names for Christ. Thank you for sharing.
  8. This is a topic I have studied intensely (everyday) for 1.5 years. I believe from study and faith that we can know the mind and will of the Lord through witnesses (modern-day prophets and the Standard Works and personal revelation). The Holy Ghost confirms the truth - but to know we are not being deceived we need to obey all three. As the Handbook instructs I have had this doctrinal understanding confirmed by my Bishop and my stake president. Thank you for your inquiry.
  9. God is God because He obeys Divine/Eternal Laws. (I have heard the opinion expressed that the Lord and/or ourselves will choose which kingdom we receive). Based on my gospel study, I believe, that we will merit the kingdom we receive based on our obedience; the first principle of the gospel is faith in the Lord (and His atonement) -- that through our best efforts to obey Divine Law and accept His grace/mercy (through making and keeping covenants) we will receive our just reward. Each child will receive equal opportunity to enter into crucial covenants with the Lord; but we are repeatedly taught that we should never delay coming unto Christ because each choice good or bad comes with a consequence and we will be held accountable to the light and knowledge we receive. Ultimately, I believe, our Father in Heaven wants each one of His children to return and live like Him, but ultimately, it is our choice whether we will follow the same Divine Laws that He is following. I believe Sections 76 and 138 and the teachings of Joseph Fielding Smith shed great light on this topic. Thank you for sharing your insights; it is good to learn from others.
  10. This has been very interesting and enlightening to hear others' understandings. I understand: 1. Agency and accountability. We cannot have choice without consequences. Opposition in all things. 2. This life matters. Today is the time to decide. If it really does not matter when we decide why does mortal time exist, and why are we commanded to sacrifice and consecrate today to build and make and keep crucial covenants?!!! This would defeat all the purpose of this second estate. 3. The Lord will be our final judge of what kingdom we merit (through our faith in His atonement). 4. I believe I have read from the prophets that we will be able to progress within the kingdom we merit.
