It seems like just yesterday that we were calling Vai to be a Bishop in the Cherry Hill Stake, New Jersey. I was the Stake Executive Secretary at the time and Brother Ahmad Corbitt was the 2nd Counselor. He served wonderfully and later became the Stake President after President Corbitt. It's neat to see regular, but extraordinarily committed people called to serve in His Kingdom.

Of course, it was earlier than that at college that we watched Vai consistently run through opposing teams on kickoff returns!

That's cool.  As he was speaking, I learned that he was a missionary in our ward in South Dakota when I was born.

    Dear Evan Hansen.

    Why does this even exist?

The premise - a kid allows the parents of a suicide victim to think he and the deceased were friends - is horrible, and the work tries to justify what goes on.

The film adaptation is even worse, as some of the songs hit the metaphorical brick wall of what the recording equipment could handle and so you get bad audio effects going on.

Just... wow this one was bad.

I find Dear Evan Hansen one of the most relatable musicals to me.  I'm somewhat aware of how socially awkward I can be and I could see myself doing something similar in high school given those unique circumstances.  And I think the music is excellent.

I think President Nelson's principle is perfect here, "What sign do you want to give the Lord"?

Growing up, and in my current family, this wouldn't be something we would choose to do; however, we do have a GA who played professional baseball for 6 years, and a mission president who played professional sports for a number of years also.

In light of the contrast, it doesn't make it very clear as to the proper sign of keeping the Sabbath day holy and what that means. I would have said both are not good signs to give to the Lord. Now, well, I don't know.

Make your decision, and roll with it. How was your talk by the way?

This was similar to my thought process.  We'll have a family council and discuss.  :)

Thanks for following up.  It got postponed!  The bishopric decided to make it Fast Sunday last week because we have General Conference and the week after is Stake Conference.  Now, with a Ward Conference and missionary farewells and homecomings, it probably won't happen until November or maybe even December.  Plenty of time to worry and fret about it now :D

  4. I've heard many forms of "Good information facilitates good inspiration."  I think the people who know us best are better equipped to provide the blessings we need.  But as long as the priesthood bearer is worthy, it's not much of an issue.

Another thought, in the area I live in, we don't have a lot of service opportunities.  Needing a blessing can be a great opportunity to let a ministering brother fulfill his calling.

As a general rule confession of sin over the pulpit is frowned upon and isn't generally necessary to get the point across. I've heard people simply say "I was in a dark place in my life" or "I was at the lowest point in my life" or something similar to set the stage and then moved into the real message of how the atonement changed that. Repentance is really a message of joy and peace and like @Traveler said that should be the tone of the overall message.

That's a good point.  I am not contemplating going into any detail of my sins.  I'm worried more about saying or referencing excommunication or rebaptism.

  6. I just received a text from a bishopric member asking if I can speak in two weeks on the topic of the Atonement and Repentance.  He also mentioned the other person speaking.  She's someone I know has also been re-baptized.  (in case anyone isn't familiar with my past I was excommunicated in 2019, and baptized again in 2020).  Speaking in sacrament has never been a very scary thing for me in the past.  I'd get a little nervous, but no real issues.  But thinking about this topic now, I'm near a panic attack thinking about being vulnerable enough to share anything from the last 3 years with the entire ward.  I know I don't have to, that I can go at it from an analytical, doctrinal view, but I get the feeling that I'm supposed to, or need to, take a personal approach.  It's really got my spinning.  I haven't even responded to him yet. Any advice, thoughts, references, examples I could share, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe it's because I'm not American, but can we get some context on those numbers? I live in the UK, and here is our death rate in total for 2021, and you can go back decades as well

    https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/weeklyprovisionalfiguresondeathsregisteredinenglandandwales

2019 has the same death rate as 2020. The same. No excess deaths at all. 0.

I know the US is different, but if we're in Spanish Flu territory, you should be able to show millions more deaths than ha 2019, right? Can I get your sources?

Not Coronavirus numbers. Just raw deaths, please. Heart attacks and cancer deaths as well as suicides shot up during lockdown, so there will inevitably be an overage. I just want to see the millions more.

Another patient treatment tragedy in Utah hyped by the Deseret News. Not once in eight miserable months did they offer the safe off-label administration of Ivermectin, but they were willing to offer end of life care, and invasive tubes. You don't have to agree with a treatment to try it once within 223 days - especially when you have nothing else to offer. Sad.

After 223 excruciating days in the hospital, this COVID-19 survivor returns home

Salt Lake City man was hospitalized for eight months, at times on the brink of death

I admit I just scanned the article, but I didn't see anything that said they didn't try Ivermectin.

My opinion - We will not see polygamy practiced in the church until Zion is established as its own nation.

    The Traveler

I had a companion on my mission that pointed to Acts 2:20-21 saying that ALL things needed to be restored before the second coming will happen, including polygamy.  I pointed out that polygamy had already been restored....  And then stopped.  It didn't change his mind, but it makes sense to me.  It needed to happen, and now it doesn't anymore.

20 And he shall send aJesus Christ, which before was preached unto byou:

21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of arestitution of all things, which God hath bspoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

That would be my answer as well. How could they get baptized?

On my mission, in Oklahoma, we had a "don't ask" policy about immigration status.  I can't speak with any experience on this topic, but I could imagine a similar policy about plural marriage status in some countries.  Not saying it's right or not.  Just that I have personal experience with the church purposefully not asking a specific question.

I realize that those in power see this as a power grab. But I'm curious about those who don't have power--my fellow voters, everyday people--who insist that vax should be mandated/forced and that people should lose jobs, freedoms, etc. If the virus is a threat to the lives of people so vax should be mandated, then how is it that someone off meds and could be a danger to self/others not be mandated to take meds? How is that explained?

    Because COVID is contagious. 🤷‍♂️

I don't relate to or understand the Javert suicide

    SPOILERS!!!! :D

On another note, how is it no one has mentioned Greatest Showman yet?  I gotta admit I like the music.  The story was fairly compelling as well.  I'm a big fan of stories where the spouse doesn't "follow their heart" and go with adultery.

I can reconcile it by accepting that when the word faith is used by different authors there are some semantic differences. In certain ideas of the word faith never goes away even with sure knowledge. But in other senses of it, like the above, it does.

I can remember at least three lessons I've been in where we talked about faith and thinking similar ideas.  It always seems that we want to come up with one overarching definition for something.  Sometimes a word or idea can mean different things to different people at different times.
