  1. I remember when people were claiming that. So, I set about looking for any similarities. I looked and itemized out every point about what made the beast "the Beast". I then studied everything people said about Obama and why he was the beast. I couldn't find a single thing.
  2. Interesting side note regarding the "royal we". I believe it comes from the French usage of the pronoun "on" (remember that much of our present English comes from the French of the Normans). Usually, the word nous is used for "we". But another pronoun is often forgotten by foreign speakers. "On" means "we". But it also means "one", as in "one does not say such things to the King." In American English, we've replaced it with the generic "you." e.g. "You don't eat bacon at every meal and expect to live a long life." So, this word that is used as "one" is more commonly used as "we" in French. I haven't looked it up. But such a connection would make sense.
  3. Why is "God" a plural noun in the original Hebrew Old Testament? I've read that is doesn't have to "mean" plural. But the fact remains that it is grammatically speaking a plural noun. Why?
  4. Ok, it's time for this month's edition of Carboggeddon. That's right. Carborendum's newsletter on things to look for in the coming apocalypse. All kidding aside... My missionary daughter was discussing the Book of Revelation with her district in a recent meeting. Some things in her weekly email to us led me to think about The Beast. For centuries many people thought of the Beast as being Emperor Nero. He certainly seemed to satisfy the description as far as the persecution of the Saints of God. And his name/title "Neron Caesar" in Greek (?) provided the gematriot = 666. So, there really was no question that Nero was the Beast Spoken of in the Book of Revelation... Only... it wasn't really him because Christ's coming didn't happen anywhere near that time. In fact, Christianity thrived for centuries after his death. And still... no Second Coming. But after reading some of what my daughter wrote, I wondered, though, if this was a symbol inside of a symbol. Maybe John actually meant Nero, but not Nero. He was just a type and shadow of The Beast. But we would know The Beast by certain behaviors and traits that paralleled some things that Nero did. While he was known for many acts which were both evil and just plain wacko, there is one single act that almost everyone who's ever heard of him mentions. He fiddled as Rome burned. I was going to write more. But I feared that would break the rules of the forum.
  5. For me, this will always be Elder McKonkie's legacy: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/1985/04/the-purifying-power-of-gethsemane?lang=eng
  6. This kind of summarizes what attitude we should all be taking when we go through a trial. PLEASE watch to the end to truly understand.
  7. To paraphrase the words of Morpheus: There is a difference between knowing the path and walking it.
  8. I kinda figured. I wasn't criticizing you personally. I just know that a lot of people out there would take that position for real. I was criticizing those individuals.
  9. Wait. A person from Germany was closer to liberal ideology than conservative ideology? Quelle suprise.
  10. @Fether, I've got some stories for you. Today my family went to The Johnson Space Center (NASA) with some relatives who are visiting for spring break. They went into a Whataburger for lunch. As they stood in line to give their order, a woman dressed like a sister missionary (as they described her ) stood beside them and opened the Bible and began shouting loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear. It was obviously not the KJV because of the language. But it was a long passage that she read. And everyone around her was quite patient. They figured when she was done, she'd sit down or something. But she didn't She began over again. Everyone started getting uncomfortable and maybe a bit annoyed. Eventually, the lady behind the counter realized that she was NOT with my family and took their order. She then called over the manager because she didn't really know what the protocol was with this. As soon as the manager came over she stopped, closed her Bible and left. The manager looked at my family (because she was standing right next to them, no social distancing) and said, "Oh, so she wasn't with you? I'm sorry. I thought she was with you and she was praying over your food or something." My family was all thinking the same thing, "Did you actually hear her? I don't know if you've ever heard a prayer over food before. But that ain't it." After all was over there was a guy at the table next to them dressed in a NASA flight suit who said,"Well...she was right." The family nodded in agreement. *************************************** A pair of missionaries were invited to a church where they had a rock band (drums, electric guitars, keyboard/synth, etc.) (Add on a sidecar, electric guitar. We'll be a trio. Baby makes three-o). Many people were called upon to sing a song. At some point, they figured they'd ask the missionaries to sing a song too. They got up and sang (ta-da) I Am a Child of God. The band didn't really know what to do. The drummer tapped a few times throughout each verse. The Guitars kind of played a chord or scale here and there. But they seemed very uncomfortable -- kind of as uncomfortable as my family at the restaurant. **************************************** Do we need to be more like other churches? I don't think so.
  11. But is that a muddy river or a fallen tree? (just below the tip of the flaming sword...which isn't flaming).
  12. Gas prices are never stable. Yes, because we were in a period of economic growth that we haven't seen since Reagan. And now ALL of the current policies are doing their best to shut down the economy again. The primary issue here is that Lithium is everywhere. If China outpaces us, the only reason is political intervention forcing it. So, is that what you're concerned about? Well, I suppose they could somehow make "mining lithium" an environmental issue. Then the US is automatically banned from producing it, along with all other wester countries. But China is always exempt from such rules. So, they will take over the entire market.
  13. That's like saying Koreans are descended from Ghengis Kahn. Yeah, I probably have 0.000001% of Ghengis Kahn's DNA in me.
  14. Two things have had a large impact on gas prices. 1. Shutdowns are going away. 2. The Keystone Pipeline project was nixed. Also, expect to see gas prices going up as the weather heats up. This year, it may be earlier than normal (if anyone actually pays attention to the weather). But every year we use a different formulation for gasoline in warmer weather.
  15. LIne upon line... here a little, there a little.
  16. OK. My mistake. I don't know of anyone who spent much time looking at ANY of the murals or expressing appreciation for them. Obviously, you're an exception.
  17. I don't know of anyone who has stopped in the hallways of the temple to simply stand and appreciate any of the murals. They are pretty decorations. And they will be missed. But we'll have others.
  18. I tend to think that the individual is usually concerned about being loved by others, which includes being loved by the Lord. Elder McKonkie's M.O. was to remind the individual that WE need to love the Lord.
  19. I don't really know if they do or not. It is certain they may "display" it more. But that isn't necessarily an indication that their passion levels surpass ours. We're told that we are to do our performances in secret that the Lord may reward us openly. We are supposed to worship in our hearts, and let our lives be the light to the world. Yes, words matter. And we certainly can express in word our reverence, love, and devotion to the Lord. But we don't do so "unto boasting". It's about observing moderation in all things. Additionally, maybe we do express it much more than you may be considering. People and cultures have different ways of expressing our feelings. This carries over into the display of devotion and worship. It may just be that we display it differently than we'd display excitement over a really cool movie. It goes back to the earlier thread about the burning in the bosom. We have these fleeting, enervating, and ultimately meaningless feelings about things of temporal worth. But the consistent, edifying, and truly meaningful feelings about things eternal are so much more important. But two things I need to point out. First, I do believe there are those from other faiths that also feel these more eternal, more real, feelings about the Saviour. But many of the more superficial displays you mention are simply that. Displays. Second, If you, yourself, have not yet felt this powerful, yet calming passion for the Lord, you need to obtain it. And you need to continue to dip into that well of prophecy. Alma 5. Can you feel so now? When I met my wife, I had a burning passion for her that was admittedly, partially fueled by lust. She really was the most dazzlingly beautiful woman I've ever met. But over the years, the fires of youth have died down somewhat, and it has largely been replaced by an enduring tenderness that is so filled with passion that there is no way to physically or verbally express it. and it truly lasts forever.
  20. Of course it is. My point is that the greater/primary purpose is to point to the Saviour. I believe the primary reason we teach doctrine is because one cannot be saved in ignorance. We teach doctrine so we can understand the WHY and HOW of the Atonement of Christ, so we can have a greater appreciation for His sacrifice. With greater appreciation comes greater faith and acceptance.
  21. You continue to commit the sin of "incidental insinuation." And you continually commit the logical fallacy of "logic chopping" via red herrings. If you don't know what it means, look it up. If you want to seem honest and forthright, then stop it. Then you'll have to seek wisdom and understanding through earnest and sincere prayer with the intent of understanding the truth of these verses, rather than the falseness of these verses.. Really? Do you expect to be taken as a sincere truthseaker when your very questions contain accusations? A sincere investigator will not require an answer to a question that they've supposedly already received an answer to about their own beliefs. Listen to the echo of the Savior's own words in the scriptures you accuse of insinuation, and you'll find your questions are already answered.
  22. As I'm often wont to point out: It is because people tend to create God in their own image. Their vision of heaven is that they will live an existence of lesiure with no responsibilities. All their whims are catered to. Indolence is the goal. So when we speak of exaltation, it is only natural for them to paint that picture upon the backdrop of their own preconceived notions and subconscious desires.
  23. Did you file on your own? Or did you use an accountant? Did you file electronically? If you filed yourself, and did not file electronically, you need some sort of verification that it was actually received. It might have gotten lost in the mail, or some such calamity.
