  1. Which is a dang shame. I was becoming a big fan of Randi Rhoades. Sort of the flip side of Rush. Tons of uncharitable rants about the other side, mixed in with the occasional deep insightful monologue about why she feels the way she does.A worthy opponent. But those who paid for the marketplace of ideas voted, and I guess we won. LM
  2. What a good, healthy perspective of another belief system. If you've tried them, and figure LDS still come out on top, then come on back. It hurts nothing to take with you your respect for these folks.LM
  3. When groups of churches get together to do things like run advertising campaigns, we're usually not involved. Some of that is probably due to the churches worried about us not being Christian enough, but I'm thinking most of it is because wards and stakes don't have (or need) advertising budgets. We have missionaries, you tube channels, and maybe church HQ runs ads in various places at various times.
  4. We believe the ancient Jews had certain health codes to follow, and the rules don't really apply to us any more (and seem a bit weird). We believe that Christ gave his disciples certain health codes to follow, and the rules don't really apply to us any more (and seem a bit weird). We believe that our modern Prophet has revealed a certain health code for us to follow today, (and some of it might seem a bit weird). LM p.s. - And if you don't think "Some of us feel guilty for drinking Coke because our Word of Wisdom forbids hot drinks" is weird, well, I can't help you. :)
  5. I can speak to this from personal experience. The counselors that work there are trained professionals - not self-righteous religious zealots. My wife saw one there for a year - I don't think church attendence or prayer ever even came up. Yeah, hubby 'doesn't think' it would be worth his time. But he'll never know until he shows up and gives it a try. LM
  6. Yeah, well. I respond like this:I would be just tickled pink if everybody on the planet earth chose to enter the temple. "Perfecting the saints" is one of the threefold missions of the church. It's doing everything it can to not only to invite all of humanity to enter the waters of baptism and become a disciple of Christ and a member in His church, but also to aid those members in ridding themselves of sin and becoming worthy to enter the Lord's house. LM
  7. Rather than give a serious reasoned reply that the question deserves, I'll chose instead to honor my dearly departed father, one of America's last great male chauvenist pigs. Everyone ready? Here goes. Polygamy? Cool - One fer lookin', one fer cookin'! LM (ducks and hides under something solid)
  8. Virginia: Bob McDonnell defeated Creigh Deeds in the November. New Jersey: Republican Christopher Christie defeated incumbent Democrat Jon S. Corzine for Governorship in January. And now, Massachusets: Brown wins the landmark Senate race over Coakley, promising to kill off Pres. Obama's healthcare reform for good. "Coakley, the state's attorney general, had been considered a shoo-in in heavily Democratic Massachusetts, which hadn't elected a Republican to the Senate in 38 years." "Trailing by double digits a little more than a week ago, Brown edged ahead of Coakley, campaigning as the pickup-truck-driving candidate, capitalizing on voter frustrations, and vowing to send Obama's health care bill "back to its drawing board."" "Brown was underfunded and unknown statewide. No Republican had won a U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts since 1972. Democrats control the state's congressional delegation. They also hold the state's governorship, along with overwhelming majorities in both houses of the state legislature." I'm still coming down off the election-night adrenalin rush, but I gotta say that I see quite a bit of hoopla in the painted picture... LM
  9. My rule of using credit cards - if I do not already have the money in the bank, I do not use the credit card. I keep a list of my bank account balance, and how much money goes to things. $100 for food, $100 for bills, etc. Whenever I use my credit card, I'll go to my list and deduct $20 (or whatever) from food, and move it into bills. So when my credit card bill comes, the money is sitting right there ready to send. We always pay our balance in full, every month. I've done this for more than a decade. I have almost perfect credit. LM
  10. I can offer this: I married someone who once upon a time got herself out of an abusive relationship, and I'm very glad I did. She once saw herself as lying at the bottom of a hole - afraid to try climbing out because of how hard it hurts when she'd fall back in it. Now she laughs and takes our giggly little girls to Girl Scouts and has lots of healthy friends, and helps other people like she was get out of their lives. It's very hard work - probably much harder for her than it is for me - to make her life happy and fulfilling. But she's doing it. It is most certainly possible. LM
  11. A marriage is two people working together. If one doesn't have any power, it's not a marriage. I think the advice I gave in your prior thread is still good advice. But one extra thing to think about: When there are kids involved, divorce doesn't end your relationship with your husband, it just changes it. Assuming he wants anything to do with his kids, you two will have some level of interaction at least until the kids are up and out of the house. I wish I had better advice.
  12. Absolutely. The church will marry non-LDS people. The church will marry people shacking up together and living in sin. The general idea is that marriage is good, formalizing commitments are good. Or, in other words, if a couple who are sinning wish to stop sinning and become man and wife, what sort of goofy mindset would there have to be, to say "sorry - you had premarital sex - that means no legal (deleted by moderator) for you!" LM (Now going to the temple is another question entirely.)
  13. This is not only a win for the republicans and a blow to the President's agenda (especially healthcare), it's also a win for pickup trucks. Scott Brown said he had a pickup truck, thinking it might get people to vote for him. The Dems said he had a pickup truck, thinking people would vote agains him. The people voted.
  14. Welcome! I'm lousy at remembering names and whatnot, but I think I have some vague memory of you being instrumental in me putting my big-boy apologetic britches on over the years. LM
  15. We're not dissapointed, we're excited. And we expect regular updates before, during, and after. Many restaurants have free wi-fi these days. And certainly let us know if you need 3 or 4 of us more beefy posters to come rescue you. LM
  16. There are probably a hundred or so kids in my ward. Maybe half a dozen of them or so, (my two kids included), homeschool. The rest attend public or private schools. LM
  17. Hi Chitchat, Here is a mostly-LDS preparadness forum you might enjoy. I've learned a lot from these guys: Got Lamp Oil Forums
  18. I would like to point out that the MoTab provided music for the computer game The Battle for Middle-Earth. Hearing MoTab singing the black speech of evil Mordor was a highlight of my gaming experience. LM
  19. Lizzy, there's a surefire way to make sure your stuff gets respected. Move out and pay your own way in life. Until that day, you're a dependent child, and even though thats stinks to high heaven, it's reality. LM (I think if you post this same problem in the youth thread you might get more sympathy...)
  20. Pretty weak, don't you think? I mean, girding loins and raising lambs are what dudes have been doing ever since father Adam got kicked out of the garden. Seems like quite a stretch to associate the two. Or, in other words, it's about as strong a link as shorn heads and head-plates linking the US Military to these guys... LM
  21. Hi from the middle of nowhere between Denver and Colorado Springs
  22. Ok - you make a good case. My dillitantish two cents on the issue: "Masons ain't Gadianton Robbers". Don't really have much else to say about it. Could I get a scriptural reference about BoM secret combinations wearing aprons? The word doesn't appear in the BoM...LM
  23. I fasted for three days and showed up to my patriarchical blessing with an engagement ring in my hand before I got an answer.
