  1. I like Nephi Black, but I've known a lot of guys named Angus and none of them have really impressed me. My boys middles names are Magnus and Asa. They are family names so it's good, but in ways I still really feel bad for them. Asa should have been Verl, but I just couldn't do it so we went with my grandfather's middle name instead. Anyhow, I like Nephi. I also like the nickname of Nev.
  2. This sums up why I stopped going to church and seminary in high school. Constantly being called up and then being made fun of when I said I didn't want to do it....it wasn't just the students making fun either. I had an nasty early morning seminary teacher. I remember at girls camp as a kid we'd have testimony night. Everyone would go around the circle and share their testimony...except me. So they would keep going and going. People got up three and four times. The leaders would just look at me and I would just sit there. I wasn't going to give testimony to something I didn't know was true. It's a nasty form of pressure. Some people just don't want to speak in public....a testimony, while important to share, can be shared in many different ways. It doesn't have to be from a pulpit or in front of a group. You would have thought they would have gotten it, but maybe not. I'm not afraid to speak in public. I was always the one who told the ghost stories. Anyhow, I can see this new kind of meeting backfiring. I know I'd stay home. I'm sure you might have the occassional moving moment, but overall giving your testimony should be optional, not mandatory.

    recipe ideas

We do tin foil dinners with chicken and cream of chicken soup instead of hamburger. 1 chicken breast handful of carrots 1 potato 1/2 onion salt and pepper 1/2 to 1 can cream of chicken soup Wrap in tinfoil and the rest is the same is pretty much the same as above....I make them at home too, but then I'll add broccoli, corn...whatever I want. Easy and yummy! These are the best type of recipes.
  4. A while back I took my three kids ages 5, 3 and 18 months to the doctors for immunizations. The older two are boys and the youngest is my little girl. Anyhow, my 5 year old freaked out when it was his turn. (His little brother went first, but his sister was going last because she had a bundle of shots to receive.) He tried to hide under the chair, almost kicked the nurse....the embarrassing behavior we all dread. Suddenly, he says, "But mom, it's ladies first." The nurse just about dropped the shots she was laughing so hard.
  5. We also go fishing and it's rare, but sometimes we go shooting.
  6. We go stargazing. If we can't find a sitter we go to the drive in. The kids go in jammies and get to watch the first movie, then it's off to bed. We watch the second movie...it's not quite a date, but close.
  7. Thanks for the tips and the welcome back. I've been with no internet for a few months. It really puts life at a stand still.
  8. I went to church a few months ago after being away for a long time. I attended Sunday School, then Relief Society. I really enjoyed Relief Society, but found myself completely lost in Sunday School. Are there other classes instead of Sunday School? I really need a beginner course. Thanks.
  9. I wrote a few months ago asking what to expect when attending Relief Society. I thought I'd put in an update. The last week in March, I got my kids to church for the first time. (My first time since the dozen of so missionary farewells I went to in high school) I didn't make it to Relief Society because I wanted to stay in the nursery with my youngest two and see how the did, plus every fifth Sunday our ward combines relief society and preisthood...this just happened to be that Sunday. Anyhow, I look forward to going again next week. This weekend we were out of town so we couldn't go. Anyhow, my five year old really enjoyed primary. My youngest two had fun in the nursery, but it was chaotic.
  10. I bet you could find a music website that would help you narrow your search for your Jasmine song. I can't say that I know of one, but maybe if you did a search. If you know the era and part of the title or lyrics you might be able to get the answer.
  11. How Great Thou Art and Abide with Me are common. Amazing Grace is another classic. However, my favorite music selection for a funeral was Roll Out the Barrel. My great aunt had an awesome sense of humor. This was her favorite song, so it was incorporated into the program. The spirit filled the room and everyone there truly took time to remember who my aunt was. While silly, it was a perfect tribute. My mother has requested Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles at her funeral...although she isn't religious or traditional. She doesn't want a funeral. She wants a Celebration of Life. A personal favorite of mine is You Lift Me Up. Josh Groban has a version of it...I don't think it is his orignally. Hope this helps Iggy. Again sorry for your loss.

    Girlfriend...

If it is something you need to do for yourself and she isn't accepting of you researching whatever it is you need (mormonism, any other religion, or any other topic for that matter) then you probably already have your answer. I am a work in progress when is comes to faith. My husband is not a religious man, but he supports me in my decisions and encourages me to find the answers that I need. He also is honest when he tells me that even if I want to be LDS, he cannot commit to ever having the same desire. This honesty and respect is one of the reasons why our marriage is so successful. Good luck!

    Earthquake

I guess it's a good reminder to either get or check our 72 hour kits. Maybe that's what I'll get my parents for Christmas this year. I know that none of them have one. Pretty sad when my uncle, the geologist, has hounded our family for years about the BIG one!

I'm in Murray and I didn't feel it.
  15. Thanks for the posts and clarification. It gives me a better sense of tithing and reassures me that it is a personal thing. Once we are settled into our ward, I will talk to my bishop about the situation. Thanks again.
  16. Such an odd disease. It's unbelievable how different alz affects each person. My step dad has recently been diagnosed with disease. He is 69 and it is apparent that he has been changing quite a bit for the last two years. Yes, thanks for starting this thread Iggy.
  17. Taxes-well, you really can't complain about that, can you? Every little deduction helps. My husband had heard that the church wants a copy of your W-2 to ensure you are paying your full 10%. I've never paid tithing before, but I can't believe that is true. It sounds like anti mormon rumors, at least I sure hope it is.
  18. I have a question about tithing. My husband is not a member, but I am and am working towards being an active member again...it's a work in progress. Anyhow, I am a stay at home mom so I don't make an income. Do I have to pay tithing? It's not that I wouldn't but my husband disagrees with tithing...well, not so much with tithing, but with how closely the lds faith tracks what you give. He thinks those types of things should be between you and God, not an accountant. In fact, the requirement to pay tithing and how it is monitored is what bothers him most about the lds faith. I didn't know it was tracked so closely. I figured he had heard that from someone who was anti mormon. I'm quite surprised by it and somewhat bothered. Anyhow, my question is will I need to pay tithing? Thanks.
  19. If anyone has any questions with scripture reference answers to add, please do it! I can't seem to get through the scriptures chapter by chapter so studying this way really helps!! This could be quite helpful to all of us. Thanks PC! Your additional question was helpful.
  20. I recently found my grandfather's Book of Mormon (he passed away about 8 years ago) and found a sheet of paper in it titled "23 Questions answered by the Book of Mormon". I don't know where he got it. There isn't any other information on it, but it helped me understand some basic beliefs about the LDS church as well as give me peace about my decision to start going to church. I thought it might help others who are searching. I hope I'm not breaking any copyright laws, but this paper is from the late 70's if not older. I think he might have taken it out of an old set of scriptures or a book when he got new scriptures in the early 80's. Have your scriptures in hand if you want the answers! It just gives the scripture to refer to. And I'm too lazy to do all of the work! 23 Questions answered by the Book of Mormon 1. What is the purpose on man's existence? 2 Nephi 2:25 2. How can God be both just and mericful? Alma 42 3. What happens to our spirits at death? Alma 40:11-14 4. Who were the "other sheep" referred to by Jesus as recorded by John 10:16? 3 Nephi 15:13-24 5. When do we witness "Unto the Father" by being baptized? 2 Nephi 31:10-14 10. Why was Jesus Christ baptized? 2 Nephi31: 4-9 11. Just what is the gospel of Jesus Christ? How did the savior explain what it is? 3 Nephi 27:13-21 12. Why was the atonement of Jesus Christ necessary? 2 Nephi 9:4-14; Alma 34:8-17 13. 21. I just have to say that you should just like my husband. The only difference is that we are just about to start going to church once we get settled in our new community. Anyhow, I hope you find the answers you are looking for. My guess is that you will have to find the answer through prayer. I think that prayer with an open heart takes a lot of practice and patience for some people. I am one of those people. My husband doesn't believe in prayer....it doesn't sound like you do either. I'm not pointing fingers, it's just a struggle especially if someone comes from a nonreligious background. Take your time if you need to. I know my biggest struggle with prayer and faith is letting my guard down completely. It's a stuggle, but I know that is worth working towards. I think it's the only way you can really let the Spirit in. Humbling yourself can be very challenging. I'm dealing with all of it right now!
  22. I live in Murray, Utah. I can't tell you much about the ward, but I love the area. My brother lives in South Jordan, Utah and my best friend lives in Draper, Utah. They both love their neighborhoods and wards, have lots of friends, and a good support network. (Although, I think Utah is a little different than other states.) You should be able to find a house for the price you listed. Plus, the job market is still booming in Utah. The housing market has slowed down here, but it hasn't crashed and I don't think they expect it to crash. And best of all, commutes are short. My brother drives from South Jordan to the University of Utah in less than 45 minutes...that is considered a long commute. We just moved from California so I understand house prices and commutes. Murray (suburb of SLC) is just a temporary stop. We are about to move to Vernal, Utah...in fact I am just about to start a thread asking about Vernal since I don't know the area. Hope this helps...but I'm full of Utah pride. I think it is a beautiful state that has more to offer than most people realize.
  23. Rev- That is truly an inspirational story. Good luck on your mission!
  24. Isaiah? I'm not what I would call scripture literate. I always just fall into my old and more comfortable ways and stop reading...I'm quite familiar with 1 and 2 Nephi. I'm really hoping to get past this point. I'm doing really well...well, mostly. I joined the Hinckley Challenge to help keep me motivated...to make it a little more of a challenge. (Because it's not challenging enough...hahaha) Plus, I'm making it a point to pray before and after and try to keep an open heart. Two days ago I took a few people's suggestions and searched the index to look for something that called to me. I read Alma 5. It was much more interesting and moving. I'm pretty sure I felt the spirit...at least a little bit. It's been so long, that I don't know that I remember what the spirit feels like (is that pathetic?), except for the couple of times the spirit has screamed at me it was so strong. Last night, I picked up at Alma 6, but again had a hard time focusing. I tried finding a meaningful scripture in each chapter, but was difficult too. The chapters I read (Alma 6-9) started sounding repetative. Anyhow, I really want to have a testimony....a strong testimony that doesn't waver especially in regards to family attitudes. I'm pretty sure the church is true. I will say I've noticed that my mind has been significantly more peaceful this last week since I found this site and started reading the BofM. It's weird. I'm sleeping better and being more patient with my kids....my 2 1/2 year old even decided to start potty training and is doing really well....I don't know that I can say that is from reading the scriptures, but it sure makes me happy. Well, thanks for all the tips. If anyone thinks of anything else, please keep them coming. I want to make my life the one I want and I know this is what I need to do that. I don't want to quit again.
