  1. Hello, beautiful people! I seldom post anymore, but I occasionally still lurk. Once in a while I just have to share something that I find meaningful. As some of you might know from my blog, I have spent a number of years studying the Book of Isaiah. Back about 2012 I was tired of not understanding 2 Nephi and skipping over it. Though I've read the Book of Mormon more times than I remember, I knew it was time to no longer take Isaiah for granted. After all, we read in 3 Nephi where Jesus Christ commands His people to study the words of Isaiah. Anyway, I have also begun to teach myself the Hebrew language and have bought a copy of the Book of Mormon in Hebrew. I love the poetry, parallelism, symbolism and other literary structures. As one who also speaks Spanish and German, I know that there are expressions that get lost in translation due to a lack of understanding cultures and thought. The more I study the Book of Mormon through a "Jewish" lens (once in a while, I interact with Jewish friends and acquaintances), the more interesting some symbols become. Nephi's books are particularly heavy in Jewish symbolism. One of the oldest symbols to the house of Israel is the "Etz Chaim" or the tree of life. Unlocking the symbolism as given to them and transmitted by them puts Lehi's vision in a new light to me. The tree of life is a physical representation of something that exists in the spirit realm. But to touch on just one aspect might encourage you to study it further if you are so inclined. 1 Nephi 8:19 And I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree by which I stood. 20. And I also beheld a strait and narrow path, which came along by the rod of iron, even to the tree by which I stood; and it also led by the head of the fountain, unto a large and spacious field, as if it had been a world. Traditionally, latter-day saints view the iron rod in terms of residential or commercial applications, like a hand rail. But in Jewish thought, the rod is an offshoot that extends from the tree of life that grows away and along the path beside the river of water to welcome and guide sojourners who seek eternal life. This "iron branch" sounds odd to our modern minds, but to Israelite minds, it's very apt. Consider Isaiah: Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots... Coming from the Jews, Nephi's use of the iron rod to represent the "word" of God is also used by the apostle John: John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Stated differently, Yeshua HaMaschiach (Jesus the Messiah) is the Word of God made flesh. He is the Word, or the Living Torah. We hold to HIM along the strait and narrow path in order to obtain eternal life. I love the notion of holding to Jesus Christ (not just words from prophets or scripture) as I make my way through life. I just wanted to share this little tidbit with you all. Hopefully this fresh perspective excites you as much as it does me. ♥️
  2. Hi, everyone I was studying the New Testament the other day and was curious to understand why some people so closely related to the Savior couldn't recognize Him after His resurrection. Would it be because they were so distracted by the moment that they couldn’t focus? Is the body and other personal traits of a resurrected person totally different? Couldn’t those people recognize the Lord at first until the Spirit had confirm that it was Him into their hearts? I’d love to get your impressions on the matter!
  3. It is worrisome that many posts are discussing many peripheral aspects of the gospel of Jesus Christ and yet serious doctrines are often propagated by opinions and lack the strength of the words of Christ. We live in a day when we are highly distracted by the world and there is not enough attention given to the Doctrine of Christ. Is there truly anything more important than His doctrine? THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST IS THE TRUTH, INVITATION AND MEANS WHEREBY ALL THAT ARE 'JUST AND TRUE' SONS OR DAUGHTERS OF JESUS CHRIST WILL LITERALLY RECEIVE HIM WHILE IN MORTALITY BY BEING A PERSONAL WITNESS OF THE MARKS OF HIS ATONEMENT, EXPERIENCE HIS GLORY, AND BE PERSONALLY TAUGHT BY HIM IN HIS PRESENCE. Wow! Yes, every person is expected to actually receive the Savior, Jesus Christ while in mortality as part of one's personal ascension process. The good news is that any person can learn, understand, believe and live the Doctrine of Christ on their own. It is a personal journey of each and every person. Don't take anyone else's word for it--learn it directly from the Lord through His words and His spirit. Start your journey in The Doctrine of Christ Study Guide at www.ProjectDoctrineOfChrist.com.
  4. For those who haven't seen it yet, Elder Nelson gave a challenge to study the 2200 scriptures about Jesus Christ listed in the Topical Guide. https://www.lds.org/blog/i-studied-more-than-2200-scriptures-about-the-savior-in-six-weeks-here-is-a-little-of-what-i-learned?lang=eng I wanted to see if I could organize the information in a way to make it easier to study. Being a programmer I wrote some code to parse the 50 something TG entries about Christ and save all of the references in a database. I found 2227, however only 1648 were unique. So I created a table that has a row for each of the unique reference grouped by the topic they came from. I thought I would share that in case anyone else might find it useful. http://ldsgeo.org/ElderNelsonChallengeOnSteroids.php Chris W.
  5. Ok, so the title says it all. I am working on getting closer to Jesus Christ and feeling His presence through the Holy Ghost. I do have faith, I am a believer and I read and study the scriptures daily, sometimes multiple times a day. Where I am lacking, is with prayer. I do pray, but not as often as I should. I do have short conversations with God sometimes throughout the day, but not too often meaningful or deep. I know for sure I need to work on praying more often and with deeper, more meaningful discussions. So, I am working on that. However, how do you guy's work on your relationship with Jesus and feeling the Spirit? It is a daily thing we must work at or we begin to feel some separation. I know it's a lot of effort on our part and its something very important we must do. And as I read the Scriptures and other church related books, I dont feel the Spirit like I wish. I will feel the presence of God and some scriptures begin to ignite my love and feelings toward Jesus, however, they seem to die quickly and I am back feeling like I am working to hard at this. Basically, most of all, I just want to feel the love of Jesus Christ and feel how important the Atonement was and understand how much He love's me. I want to feel that relationship grow and not die down. I want to feel this love. I want a strong relationship with Jesus Christ and learn to be more appreative of His Sacrifices for me. Does anyone have any advice on how I can work on this? Are there any special tools or ways you use to develop and keep this relationship/love? What is it you do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
  6. (Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 31:8) 8 Wherefore, after he was baptized with water the Holy Ghost descended upon him in the form of a dove. Can we conclude from this scripture, and from the teachings and practices of the church today, that prior to His baptism at the age of 30, Jesus did not have the gift of the Holy Ghost?
  7. Okay this is a shot in the dark and probably will be unsuccessful...but...here it is: Ever since my mission (California, San Bernardino, May 2001-2003) I have been trying to find a specfic picture of the Savior that I really liked. Unfortunately, that was before the days of smartphones so I could not just snap a picture, and I have lost any reference to it, such as who painted it or what it was called. All I remember was that it hung in one of the missionary houses in Rancho Cucamonga. As I recall, it was mostly a chest/head shot of the Savior wearing a brown robe, and it was unique because I remember the first time I saw it, I thought he looked upset/mad/evil, like it was a picture of Lucifer almost. Anyway, the painting grew on me, but I've never been able to track it down...I'm not even certain it was painted by an LDS artist, or that it was widely distributed. Like I said - shot in the dark. If this rings a bell to anyone, or if you think you've seen a similar picture, I would appreciate a reply. Thanks!
  8. Hey all! I'm writing a book about the second coming of Jesus Christ, and I have a section in each chapter about rumors vs. doctrine about the second coming--kind of like a 2nd coming Snopes Anyway, what are some rumors you've heard about anything to do with the second coming? (the mark of the beast, gathering to zion, lost tribes of Israel--anything, really)
  9. I have a strong testimony that the gospel can be shared in all we do and in all we say. Over the last 15 years our family has gone through trial after trial, mostly with health and job loss only to see time and time again the hand of God in our lives helping us and supporting us each and every time. I have seen first had the answers to fervent prayers, the power that daily scripture study has in our lives. I have seen lives touched and service rendered out of love and the desire to improve the lives of others to help them come to know they are children of God, that he loves them, that Jesus Christ is their redeemer and that we have the responsibility to serve and teach at home, at church, at work and at play. Thank you again for reminding me that I can influence others for good by writing the spiritual experiences I have had and sharing them with others. Bless you for all you do.
