  1. I wanted to personally invite you to delve into the fascinating world of the Joseph Smith Jr. Photo. I've dedicated extensive research and investigation to unravel the mysteries behind this intriguing piece of history. Join me on this captivating journey as we explore the enigmatic photo of Joseph Smith Jr. and uncover the truth it holds. You don't want to miss this intriguing adventure! I also address the Larsen Daguerreotype. http://josephsmithjrphoto.blogspot.com
  2. Seems like it could be him. The darks areas around his cheeks and chin could be from when he was tarred and feathered. There's another photo which is supposed to be Joseph Smith, according to an RLDS archivist, "90% certainty." What do you think? Are either of these photos of the Prophet?
  3. First things first. I am not as frustrated as this might sound but here I go. Also, this is just something that has always itched at me. Sometimes I feel like the prophecies that Joseph Smith frequently gave during the excursions are flawed and so we're trying to explain unfulfilled prophecy. Almost like the attitude is, "Go here to Zion," or, "Now God says go there," "now there," "Okay now lets go back," "Off to Zion!" "Actually, Zion is in our hearts." "Leave Jackson Missouri" "THIS IS THE PLACE!" The revelations in D&C 57:1-5; 84:4-5; 136:18 They imply that the prophecies shall be fulfilled at THAT time of the saints. So they came up with a scapegoat to explain unfulfilled prophecy. For example: 42:35 and 57:1-5 42:35 And for the purpose of purchasing lands for the public benefit of the church, and building houses of worship, and building up of the New Jerusalem which is hereafter to be revealed(The Prophecy) NEXT: 57: 1 Hearken, O ye elders of my church, saith the Lord your God, who have assembled yourselves together, according to my commandments, in this land, which is the land of Missouri, which is the land which I have appointed and consecrated for the gathering of the saints.2 Wherefore, this is the land of promise, and the place for the city of Zion.(Brigham said, "This is the Place" in salt lake valley)3 And thus saith the Lord your God, if you will receive wisdom here is wisdom. Behold, the place which is now called Independence is the center place; and a spot for the temple is lying westward, upon a lot which is not far from the courthouse.4 Wherefore, it is wisdom that the land should be purchased by the saints, and also every tract lying westward, even unto the line running directly between Jew and Gentile;(What does this mean??)5 And also every tract bordering by the prairies, inasmuch as my disciples are enabled to buy lands. Behold, this is wisdom, that they may obtain it for an everlasting inheritance Also, 84:4-5: 4 Verily this is the word of the Lord, that the city New Jerusalem shall be built by the gathering of the saints, beginning at this place, even the place of the temple, which temple shall be reared in this generation.( ' In this generation' implies the saints at that time will see it come to fruition.) 5 For verily THIS generation shall not all pass away until an house shall be built unto the Lord, and a cloud shall rest upon it, which cloud shall be even the glory of the Lord, which shall fill the house. 97: 11 Yea, let it be built speedily, by the tithing of my people. God changing his mind in D&C 136:18 Zion shall be redeemed in mine own due time. Thanks for giving me your time!
  4. Maybe someone can help me figure out what this video is... I remember it from when I was in seminary about 15 years ago. I'm guessing it was during Doctrine and Covenants. I remember it showed Joseph Smith as a teen walking out of the grove, or in a field, and he was walking with his hands running through tall blades of grass, and then it flashed forward to show what the church had grown into... youth at temple square, youth meeting President Hinckley. I think Joseph may have just been kicked out of that preacher's wagon after Joseph told him about the first vision. Does anyone know what I'm talking about or where I can find it? I've never been able to figure it out. Thanks!
  5. According to Elder Jeffry R. Holand of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, in a Conference talk that he spoke in October 2013, he has suffered from a mental illness. "Like a Broken Vessel" (October 2013) https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2013/10/like-a-broken-vessel?lang=eng&media=video#watch=video According to Elder Holland, the latter-day prophet George Albert Smith was a kind and gentle man, yet he had a recurring mental illness as well. Also according to Elder Holland, even the prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. may have sufferened from the metal illness that is now called "Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)". In Joseph Smiths own words he described his mood as going into the "abyss". I accept Elder Holland's words as being true, as I accept him as a prophet, seer, and revelator that all of the members of the First Presidency are and that all of the members of the Quorum of the Twelve are. I respect Elder Holland for being open about his mental illness and for asking us all to show compassion for those who have a health problem as serious as mental illness is. I have a mental illness myself. A lot of people do. I believe that attitudes about mental illness would change if more people were open about their own mental illnesses as Elder Holland was in his conference talk. I have more faith in God and in the LDS Church after hearing Elder Holland's talk. I have more faith that I will be permanently healed in heaven and will be judged by an all-knowing God who can take everything into account.
  6. According to this Church News article: LDS Church News - Video: Joseph Smith, prophet of the restoration, the move Joseph Smith: Prophet of the Restoration received a major overhaul in 2011, and the new version (2011) has replaced the old version (2005). I saw the movie in the Legacy Theater on Temple Square back when they were showing the original (2005). I have since watched the revised version (2011), and I did not like it as much. The original (2005) movie had the feel of a feature film, where the new movie (2011) has the feel of a really long sunday school video. Having seen both versions, I wanted to obtain a copy of the original (2005) to add to my personal library. However, I have not been able to find it. It appears that at one point, the 2005 version was available on the Doctrine & Convenants and Church History Visual Resource DVDs, but that is no longer the case. I purchased a copy this week, and the DVD now contains the new (2011) version of the film. Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of the original (2005) version of the film? I have found a few YouTube videos of it, but all of them seem to be ripped below DVD quality. And as a side note, am I alone in thinking that the original version of the film was better than the revised version?
  7. I am trying to find a couple quotes an I was wondering if there was someone here that could help me. Here they are: 1. There is a quote, that is attributed to an early Church leader, possibly Brigham Young, that goes something like this: The day that the Church is accepted by the world, that we know that we aren't doing what we should as Saints. 2. A quote by Joseph Smith that talks about the ultimate purpose of the Church on the Earth is to establish Zion. This has been true of every other dispensation as well. If someone could give me the exact quotes for these and give me a reference I would greatly appreciate it.
  8. In Sunday School classes, 2012 will be focus on The Book of Mormon. I, being the Sunday School teacher in my branch, am quite excited to be delving into the pages of this great book of scripture. Once, on my mission, I ran into someone of another faith and he asked me a good question, "Why is the Book of Mormon necessary?" "Why do we need it if we have the Bible?" I gave him the best answers I had at the time (clearness of doctrine, 2nd witness of Christ, etc.). I wanted to hear some of your input on why we need The Book of Mormon. What does it offer to you? Any input is welcome. Thanks.
  9. Just finished watching the movie Joseph: Prophet of the Restoration on BYUTV (again) and was struck by something that I'd never considered before - the movie shows Oliver Cowdery baptizing Joseph Smith Sr. As it was produced by the Church, I assume this fact is true but I cannot confirm it anywhere (or for that matter, confirm who baptized Joseph Smith Sr). All that I've been able to find is material that indicates Joseph Smith Jr was on the bank of the river and when "Joseph Jr. saw Joseph Sr. come up out of the water, he is reported to have cried, "Oh! My God I have lived to see my own father baptized into the true church of Jesus Christ!"" So if Joseph Jr did not, in fact, baptize his own father, does anyone know why he did not and was it Cowdery who actually did?

  11. about January 16, 1838 Norton Township, Ohio. Fleeing mob violence in Ohio, Joseph Smith traveled to Dublin, Indiana, where he tarried nine days. 12. (Emphasis added) "During the days of Joseph's youth, the region around Palmyra became embroiled in religious fervor. Preachers and ministers of every sect fervently cried, 'Lo, here!' and others, 'Lo, there!' Some were contending for the Methodist faith, some for the Presbyterian, and some for the Baptist. 'In the midst of this war of words and tumult of opinions,' Joseph Smith wrote: 'I often said to myself: What is to be done? Who of all these parties are right; or, are they all wrong together? If any one of them be right, which is it, and how shall I know it?' (Joseph Smith--History 1:10; see also v. 5). "This is a universal question that seekers of religious truth ask. This is the question investigators will ask of themselves and of our missionaries. In the heart of one who is sincerely seeking the truth, this question is the beginning of spiritual knowledge. "After Joseph offered a humble prayer for guidance in the woods near his home, he said: 'I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. " '. . When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other--This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!' (Joseph Smith--History 1:16-17). "From that day forward, Joseph Smith learned line upon line. He turned himself to diligent study of God's word, but he did more than that; he sought knowledge and inspiration from God Himself. Joseph communed with angels. He spoke with the great and righteous personalities of ancient times. President John Taylor (1808-87) said that Joseph Smith seemed to be as familiar with these ancient prophets and patriarchs as we are with one another. Abraham, John, Adam, Peter--Joseph knew them as you know your good friends." (Joseph B. Wirthlin, "The Restoration and Faith," Ensign, Jan. 2006, 35) * To restore: to bring back into existence, use, or the like; reestablish The gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored once again; His church has been restablished as it had been established by the Lord Himself, after the same pattern: Prophets, Apostles, revelation, etc,...
