  1. Lindsey_H

    Help???

Okay, well first off I'm Lindsey. I was baptized at 17 in november 2008. I was a active member up until a few months before my 1 year as a member came up when I moved. I came back 3 months later and got a job and it's been an additional 5 months since then. I haven't been able to attend any church due to work at home depot and I'm going through a difficult time. I feel like I've lost my virtue I guess. I swear, have a tattoo[in memory of a deceased friend], I smoke occasionally, I do lots an lots of things I shouldn't. I've become more and more saddened by my actions and have been begging work for Sundays off and 3denied requests later here I am. Still fighting what is right and wrong internally. I miss church and I want to go on a mission when I'm 21 but I'm also in love with a man in AZ that is a whole different set of problems... With him everything is total perfection we want kids together and have planned our loves together bit he's too afraid to be a man and live away from his family. He's a devout Jehovahs witness and is treated like a baby literally at the age of 23. I've expressed to him that I don't see his church as true and his faith actually depresses me a little...well it does a lot...but he still is set that if we marry I MUST be JW. I can't do it. I'm sure he is the one for me. I feel it with every bone in my body and like heavenly father has sent him to me. He refuses to see any of the lds missionaries or even look at the docterine. But we have managed to have a middle ground and have the occasional scripture reading and discussion of the two printings of scripture. Any ways, in a nutshell work is destroying my ability to stay close to heavenly father through sacrament meetings and this guy is perfect only he wants me to join his church which I can't join because I know the LDS church is true and the gospel is true. Thank you for reading. Any tips or advice will be welcomed. - Lindsey H
  2. I have a strong testimony that the gospel can be shared in all we do and in all we say. Over the last 15 years our family has gone through trial after trial, mostly with health and job loss only to see time and time again the hand of God in our lives helping us and supporting us each and every time. I have seen first had the answers to fervent prayers, the power that daily scripture study has in our lives. I have seen lives touched and service rendered out of love and the desire to improve the lives of others to help them come to know they are children of God, that he loves them, that Jesus Christ is their redeemer and that we have the responsibility to serve and teach at home, at church, at work and at play. Thank you again for reminding me that I can influence others for good by writing the spiritual experiences I have had and sharing them with others. Bless you for all you do.
  3. I was blessed during my Naval Career to serve for a period of one year in the country of Iceland. I was stationed in Keflavic Iceland. I was baptized at the LDS Chapel in Reykjavic Iceland on 10 March 1998. At that time the LDS Chapel was an old store front building that was shared by the American LDS service members and the Icelandics. I was also blessed to be the first American in Iceland to be ordained to the Melchizedek Priesthood. I would truly love to return there some day as a missionary. That would be an awesome, blessed experience. This is an interesting article that I found in the Church News about the country of Iceland.
  4. As the sun crept over the Wasatch Front early Tuesday morning, its rays not only fell on a new, 20,000-square-foot LDS Church meetinghouse in Farmington but also powered it. Featuring 158 panels mounted over about a third of the soon-to-be-opened stake center's south roof, the solar power system is one of several innovative uses of energy-efficient construction and utility technologies being tested by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You can read the full story at Mormon Church unveils solar powered meeting house
  5. In my ward, a lot of the youth play video games. Xbox, Playstation, PC, you name it. We play all kinds of games, from Guitar Hero/Rock Band to Halo. We do occasional parties where video games are involved, and one of my fellow deacons owns a variety of vintage arcade games. Anyway, I find that enjoy playing certain games that my parents don't seem to like. For example, I love playing Doom, Quake, and the Halo games. I also play a little Modern Warfare every now and again. But my parents do not like these games. "violent" and "evil" and some words used by them to describe the games I play. I know for a fact that a Mormon, Sandy Peterson, was one of the creators of Doom and Quake. Anyway, I just wanted to get some opinions from other Latter Day Saints. Are some of the games I play bad? I am not offended by the violence, and I despise games with sexual content or heavy swearing. I just find first person shooters very fun.
  6. Is it sacrilegious to wear a cross, like the Catholics do? What are LDS views on this?
  7. Hi all! I noticed there's one or two other Baha'is on this forum, and mention has already been made of the many things Baha'is and Latter-day Saints have in common. I've been married to my wonderful wife, who's a devout and active Church member, for over 14 years, and I've been a Baha'i for most of that time. I appreciate the teachings of the Church and have read the BoM, D&C, PGP as well as much of the rich collection of historical church publications. I'm good friends with many people in my wife's ward and enjoy going to church whenever I can -- although my own activities in my faith have prevented me of late. I'm always looking to learn more about the LDS faith, and if anyone wants to ask me about some of the things I've discovered we have in common, feel free. I'm not interested in converting anyone, and I'm not interested in being converted. My only goal as a Baha'i is to learn from people of different religions, to find common ground, and to do my small part in promoting the cause of religious harmony. Warm regards, S
  8. I’m just curious what Mormon religious leaders (bishops and the like) and/or missionaries think about bad spirits, or maybe even ghosts? I’m not 100% sure weather “ghosts” exist (although I have experienced some VERY creepy things). But I KNOW there are evil spirits. So if a home is having trouble with unpleasant spirits, what does the church do? Do they perform blessings in the home, or on a person? Do they take any kind of action against it? Or do they prefer people just ignore it to smother it out? I really don’t hear a whole lot about this with LDS, so I was just curious. That’s pretty much the majority of my question. But for those who are interested in ghost stories, below, I will post the more specific reasons for wanting answers to this question, via my own personal experiences. Most of these things happened in my grandmother’s house, as it usually does. There are always lots of problems there, these stories are very common occurrences: Incident #1 (1999)-- I was staying at my grandma’s house one summer (on my mom‘s side), when I was 18. Several of her grandchildren live with her, because their parents were in jail. Grandma told me she was going to go pick up the kids from school. I said “ok”. I sat there waiting alone in the large, old, 2-story, 4-bedroom house. I was on the couch in the living room, watching TV. My only company was the family dog Cody (a large, brown pit bull mix), who was laying at my feet. Suddenly, I heard a loud thump coming from upstairs. I muted the TV, and listened. Then I heard distinct, heavy footsteps walking down the upstairs hallway (which is just above the living room). Cody heard it too-- he jolted upright and looked toward the top of the stairs. I heard one of the bedroom doors creek… So I thought somebody might be up there. I was kinda scared, but I ventured upstairs to check. I searched the rooms (closets, under the beds), checked all the window locks, etc. NOTHING. All was secure. So I went back downstairs and resumed my seat on the couch, Cody once again sitting at my feet. But this time, he wouldn’t relax… He was tense, sitting upright, and staring at the top of the stairs. Then he started growling, low and rumbly. He made his way toward the stairs very slowly, his back hairs raised. When he reached the bottom step, he paused, barking and snarling viciously! Again, I muted the TV and yelled out “HELLO??” ….. Then I heard BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! All the upstairs bedroom doors had slammed shut hard, one after the other. I completely freaked! Cody whimpered and ran over to me, and hid behind me. So I grabbed his collar and ran out of the house, probably faster than I‘ve ever run before. I sat on the curb outside the driveway, and didn’t go back in until grandma got back with the kids. It wasn’t the first time something like that happened, and to this day, I refuse to be alone in that house. I didn't tell grandma about it though, because she thinks spiritual stuff is just rediculous. Which is why nobody has ever been called in to bless the house, she probably wouldn't go for it. Incident #2 (1999)-- This happened a few months before the above incident. My cousin Nichole and I were at my grandma’s house. Grandma had taken the younger kids to Marine World, so me and Nichole were alone. We were in the back yard, by the pool. Nichole was practicing tricks on her skateboard, on the cement. I was relaxing on the white wicker patio furniture. Suddenly we heard a very loud, low, male voice yell out, “NICHOLE!” from the window at the top of the staircase. We both turned to look and we saw a very tall, very thin man standing in the window. He wore a black coat with a white under shirt. He had black hair and a mustache. Nichole and I looked at each other and I said, “Did you see that??” She said yes, and described the same thing I saw. We looked back up again, but there was nothing there. Now, keep in mind, this man’s head was way up at the top of the window, and it’s a LONG window! A person would have to be nearly 8 feet tall for their head to be that far up the window. We both ran inside, to see if someone was there. We checked around, but there was nobody. It really freaked us out. Incident #3 (1995)-- This happened when I was 14 years old. It was mid-August. Me and my 3 cousins (all a few years younger than me) were helping out with cleaning grandma’s house. I was not an active member at this time, and none of my cousins had ever been to church, much less read any bible. Our grandma asked us to sort through some of the junk in the old chest in the back closet, and throw out anything that was broken or useless. So there we were, going through a few old items, when we ran across an old Ouija board. It was still in the cardboard box, along with the curser. We took it out and decided to play around with it. We sat in a circle around it, gently resting our fingers on the curser. I didn’t actually touch it, because I didn’t want to be accused of moving it. We had this silly little “concentrating” moment, and then we asked it if there were any spirits in the room, and the curser pointed to “yes”. So we asked a few more questions: Are you someone we used to know?-- No. Did you pass away recently?-- No. Are there any messages you have for loved ones? -- No. Have you ever been alive on earth before?-- No. Are you an older spirit?-- Yes. Are you an angel, or a messenger of god?-- No. Where are you from? -- G-E-H-E-N-N-A I wrote the letters down on a piece of paper, and since none of us had ever heard of such a place before, we assumed it was either a silly nonsense word, or one of us must have been messing around. At the time, my dad and I lived in the same town. After I went home, I told my dad what we did, and he looked at me like he was disappointed. He went to bible college, and he is very religious (a baptized member, but not active). He knows a lot about the bible, and is very spiritual and liberal-minded. But he does not approve of stuff like that. Right away, he told me “You shouldn’t be playing around with those things.” Well, I told my dad about all the questions we asked and the responses. Then I told him about the name of the supposed location we were given… He looked at me kind of puzzled and asked, “Wait a minute… How was it spelled?” I showed him the piece of paper I wrote it down on. He looked at me like he was concerned. I shrugged and said, “What??”. He stood up, walked over to the end table, opened the drawer and pulled out our Bible. He flipped to the “concordance” as he called it, and looked around for a minute. Then he walked over and laid the book in my lap, pointing to the word “Gehenna”. Basically, one of its definitions was another name for ‘hell’. I looked at dad kinda freaked out, and he told me, “Like I said, you shouldn’t be playing around with those things. Don‘t do that again.” And I haven’t. I’m just saying, I think something is up in that house. If people get out of there, they are peaceful, happy, friendly…. But when they go in that house, they fight and yell constantly, and say the meanest things. Even get physical.
  9. I have some young boys, both under 10 right now. They are both 1/2 Native American and their mother and I hold to many native traditions including long hair. I know that my kids are taught they will have short, almost army like, hair cuts. Does this also hold true for Native American Indians that serve missions?

  11. Church services for the LDS military group in Iraq include two one-hour meetings a day, writes U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Eric Russell. "Each meeting is structured like a sacrament meeting all the way up until after sacrament, when we turn to lessons instead of talks," added Russell, of Lee's Summit, Mo., who is an assistant group leader. About 20 attend the early afternoon session and 10 to 15 attend the evening session. But even then, they wear their uniforms to church and bring their weapons — as they do everywhere, he added. Russell is one of the many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who is on active duty overseas. Some meet in groups like Russell's, and others have had missionary experiences as they live the gospel while serving their country. Some are on their first deployments, and others have been overseas several times. They include soldiers, sailors, engineers, medics and gunners. In celebration of Independence Day, Mormon Times readers are sharing information about their loved ones on active duty overseas. Read the profiles on MormonTimes.com.
  12. Creators of a new faith-based television drama plan to begin filming in Heber City in late summer, and market the show worldwide to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The show, "This Is the Place," will center on a heavily LDS neighborhood in Colorado, and the challenges they face in meeting the demands of their faith, families, workplaces and communities. The action will be viewed through the eyes of a non-LDS character, a newly divorced chain smoker who is trying to understand the people in his new neighborhood. "We got tired of seeing how the LDS were portrayed in shows like 'Big Love,' 'House' and 'Boston Legal,' " said Todd Bay, executive producer, Heber City resident and owner of Park City's Bay Entertainment & Media. "We were tired of non-LDS telling LDS stories. We have taken the position that if we don't tell our stories, someone else will, and they're not going to get it right." 13. I titled this question that way partly to get attention but partly because I really want to get my fellow Saint's opinions on this issue. I know our Prophets used to speak openly about the dangers and evils of Socialism at one time (particularly President Benson when he was the Secy. of Agriculture and President McKay when Soviet Communism was at it's peak) but it seems that now we are a worldwide church we have gone pretty quiet on the issue. Here's what I am getting at. I went to the Salt Lake Tea Party on April 15 and I was a bit surprised to find that as an active Latter Day Saint, I was in the minority. Most of the people I talked to at the event and since were not LDS. So, I got curious and started asking around and I have been surprised to find that most of the members of my ward that I asked (in Salt Lake County) have no compelling concern about the current direction America is heading and several said they actually agree with the government take over of the banks, health care, the auto industry, etc. because "corporate greed has gotten so bad." I also get a very common response from many LDS family and friends that they have given up entirely, there is no hope for America and that they are just waiting for end to come. None of these LDS Americans have any interest in protesting or even calling public officials or participating in the political process at all other than to vote. Needless to say, I am troubled. I want to know how prevalent these ambivalent views on socialism are among other LDS people. Any comments?
  14. It's difficult to measure the harvest from the intensive cyber missionary service that is now happening all over the World Wide Web, but here's an indication. The following message was posted today on the LDS Cyber Missionaries forum http://www.LDS1.org: “I have been over on Facebook- group “All Christians On Face book” usually posting under a thread started by Jeff Stevens (i think I have his name spelled right?)– and it is interestingly enough titled “Ask a Mormon”! There have been a LOT of “hecklers” who post reams of anti stuff- but the administrators do a pretty good job of banning those who get personal or dirty in their language. — bless them! I have just recently had several posters say that from my work there, they have decided to look into the church, and one said they would read the BofM! Just yesterday a Jehovahs’ Witness has suggested that from my respectful posting there, that he would like to learn more of our doctrines! WOWIE ZOWIE! Made my day! So we are just inching into that. I wish I had MORE time! I wish I didn’t need to eat or sleep or shower or clean my house etc! (boy would my husband be upset!– but I AM blessed as he totally approves of my posting- but does worry if I let the dishes go unwashed for more than 2 days — yea– I worry about that too! ;/ and I work to NOT let that happen! May God bless us all in our work for Him and guide us in how we post!” GramaJane
  15. Hello Everyone, My name is Ginger. I am a single mother of two children. 8 & 14, at this time, however, next year they will be older. I am a professional freelance writer, I work from home and today is one of my chosen days off. I figured that I'd look around to see what type of LDS websites were out there and found all ya'll! I joined the church in 1979, when I was 19 years old. The sister missionaries began teaching me on a Monday and I was baptized that next Thursday. For seven years, the church was my whole life... Then something happened, it is called Gossip and it must obviously took a down-hill race. I was confused and terribly hurt by the telling of things that were not true to begin with. I walked away and no one, no other members ever came to even see about me or talk to me. Not my home teachers, visiting teachers or friends, not a single person came... That was 1986. Things have been hard, but they have always been hard. However, I do know that the church itself is true and all the prophets are ordained of our Heavenly Father. I do believe that the teachings of the church are true no matter how weak individual humans may be... It's been awhile, but I'm on my way back. So, now here I am... Please, Be good too me, as I always do my best to always be good to others and my heart is terribly broken... Ginger

  19. Hi, My name is Donna and I am a student at CSU San Marcos. I am currently working on a group project for my ID class: Explorations of Community Diversity. My group chose to focus on Mormons. I am working on "Misconceptions and Myth Busters of the Church". If anyone is willing to participate in an "cyber" interview. Please respond to the thread or email me at [email protected]. During the "interview", I will be giving you a "rumor" about the Mormon church such as "Mormons are not allowed to drink soda" or "You have to wear Mormon underwear for life" then you will counter that. Thanks!!!

  21. CTRmom.com is brand new and much like this website, but just for LDS moms. Im not here to steal anyone. Just give LDS moms another place to go to get support with subjects that they might now want to talk about here where both male and female are allowed to participate.
  22. I am not a meber of the LDS church, but have been interested in joining for sometime. I bought a Book of Mormon from the supply center on lds.org.au [in my case], and im still waiting for that. I've filled out a form on mormon.org to have missionaries contact me, and they still haven't ... I'm just wondering how long they will take? I'd just "turn up" at my local church, but, I don't know ... it just seems a bit, out there, just turning up ... i dont know. Can anyone offer advice? If that made any sense?...
  23. Yesterday (Saturday) was an amazing day. I woke up at 3:30 AM... met someone at the church to drop off my car, hopped in theirs, and began the 2 1/2 hour trip to the temple on the other side of the island. He was my escort for my first time, and it was great having that time to learn a little more about him and prepare myself for what was going to happen. Of course I won't go into detail on any of this, but it was seriously one of the most spiritually edifying experiences of my life. I wish they had initiatory sessions as often as they do endowment sessions... I was only able to do that once (for myself) and I can't wait to go again as proxy for one who passed on. In preparation for that day, a lot of people were telling me things like "Don't bother trying to remember anything because it's so confusing the first time around..." or saying that I might think it's weird the first time, which really got me worried. To my relief, they were all wrong. Yes, it was a little more than I could memorize the first time around, but everyone was there to help and it was just great. I didn't get a lot of the symbolism when I first went, but today when I was sitting in church a few things came to me... and I understood the meaning behind them. After the first session, I was able to be proxy for a few people in a sealing, which was fantastic. I wish I could go back tomorrow and do it all again. After the sealing I was about to leave because my escort had to make the trip back home, but one of my friends showed up in the men's dressing room and said he was going into a session and that he would take me home, so I went again! All I can say is "wow". I've just been thinking about it ever since then. I leave on my mission in less than 3 weeks (August 15th) but hopefully I'll have a few more chances to go while I'm still here. I can't wait to go every week when I get to the MTC... that sounds fantastic. Another thing people were wrong about.... garments are not uncomfortable. They're actually more comfortable than my usual boxers, so it's not a bad change at all (except it's pretty humid here and wearing the undershirt makes things pretty warm... not that I'll ever be taking it off for that reason, though). Just thought I'd share my experience.......................... and man, the celestial room is so..... pure. It's so unusual having my mind that clear. Anyway, I hope you all had a great weekend. I'll remember mine for the rest of my life.

  25. I think many Latter-day Saints believe that we are getting close to a time when there will be a separation of the righteous from the wicked, the wheat from the tares. That separation may mark the division between those whose life choices have prepared them to endure a Terrestrial (Millennial) glory, and those who have chosen Telestial and will have their physical bodies destroyed by the glory of our Savior's perhaps imminent "Second Coming." "And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left." Matthew 25: 32-33 Matthew 25 There are many more scriptural references to nations, kindreds, tongues, and people: Word Search: nations kindreds tongues people As Latter-day Saints, we are commissioned to help lift God's children from a Terrestrial state to a Celestial state by adding to the truths found in all other churches. We perform authorized priesthood ordinances, and in holy temples apply the apostolic sealing power to bless God's children eternally. That is why LDS missionaries lovingly work even among righteous fellow followers of Jesus Christ, to add to what they already have. But that work is in preparation for a time beyond the Millennium when this world will leap from a Terrestrial to a Celestial glory. God sows His seeds early... In addition to that exclusive Celestial work, I believe that Latter-day Saints are also commissioned to help lift people from Telestial wickedness to Terrestrial righteousness. That task I think we share with god-fearing people of all religious denominations. And that task is the one most urgently needed to be carried forth in these days when it may soon be too late for the wicked to repent and qualify for life during the Millennium. The common sexual sins of our time will almost certainly place unrepentent fornicators and adulterers on God's left hand, they may not survive into the Millennium, they must be warned. Also, the Gospel still needs to be carried to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. It is my thinking that much of the work of helping lift people from Telestial to Terrestrial (wickedness to righteousness) including perhaps preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations can be carried out today by Cyber Missionaries of all denominations, not just by the Saints whose focus is on priesthood ordinances and FULNESS. Am I wrong in this? What do you think? God is no respecter of persons, Latter-day Saints may have many more helpers than we sometimes think we have. Perhaps in these tempestuous last days of preparation for the leap from Telestial to Terrestrial we have more COMMON GROUND with other Christians and god-fearing people everywhere than we tend to think we have! "That these plates of brass should go forth unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people who were of his seed." 1 Nephi 5:18 1 Nephi 5 The above reference is to the brass Plates of Laban, the commandments of the Lord to the descendents of Joseph. This could refer to parts of the Bible and possibly the Torah - which of course could be taught to other nations, kindreds, tongues, and people by god-fearing people who are not necessarily Latter-day Saints. Do you think we are nearing a separation of the righteous from the wicked, the wheat from the tares? Do you think that many god-fearing people everywhere are as capable as Latter-day Saints of helping lift God's children on earth from Telestial to Terrestrial so they can survive the end times and live on into the Millennium or qualify for the first resurrection? How can we best get the common ground message out to Christians of other denominations and effectively join with them as Cyber Missionaries in the task of crying repentance, and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to every nation? (Granted, baptism by proper authority is essential to continue on the road to Celestial glory, but perhaps only righteous living is required to escape the fire to come??) Comments anyone?
