  1. Shalom everyone. A moderator (my apologies for forgetting which) was kind enough to point me in the direction of this subforum. I have not had the opportunity to read any of the topics here, but I wanted to say hello and to offer my friendship as well as my brain (that didn't sound quite right...) to anyone who wishes to ask me questions or share your own experiences with our culture and faith. Oh, and I happen to be Jewish. I suppose that might be apropos to mention. I greatly look forward to meeting each of you. A few things I'd like to mention: 1) I am NOT easily offended. I am kind and respectful, and if you are the same, I would appreciate that. Ask me anything without fear. 2) I am NOT here to challenge your faith or disparage your beliefs in any way. I love learning about all faith experiences. 3) I work odd hours, so if you ask me something and it takes me a spell to respond, please do not think I forgot you. If it takes a REALLY long time for me to reply, I may not have seen what your post. 4) I am in recovery from sarcasm. This is an ongoing process. You have been warned. May HaShem bless you and keep you.
  2. I am new to this site and so far I think it is pretty good site. I am 59 and have been a member of the Church for 32 years. I love the Lord and look forward to finding other people who enjoy discussing the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I tell people when they first meet me that I am not like any woman you have ever met before or are likely to meet. I am not crazy, but I do enjoy life. I have various hobbies and enjoy learning how to do them better. In fact I like learning. There is a website that will help you learn more, but I am not sure if I can tell you the website, al though I have no direct ties to it. I am divorced, but no children. When I was younger , not having children did not bother to awful much. But now that I am older, I sure wish I had grandchildren to spoil. well it was glad to talk to y'all. Stop by and say hello if you got a minute.
  3. I apologize if this has been posted before, but I have been unable to find a post regarding this topic after searching. English is my first language and I like to think that I am fluent. I am simultaneously studying about seven languages at once because I'm quite fickle due to a very short attention span. Vietnamese is my absolute favorite language; I've been studying a bit and I love it so much. I watch a lot of Vietnamese cooking shows, movies, and listen to music in Vietnamese so I'm picking up some vocabulary in addition to studying. Recently, I decided to learn Khmer/Cambodian. I was intimidated by learning the alphabet at first, but it wasn't as difficult as I had imagined. I just really like Austro-Asiatic languages, I think. Next on my agenda is Finnish. I have a fascination and love for the language and I have been studying it for the purpose of personal research to do with Finnish composers (finding resources), history, literature, etc. I hope to be fluent one day. I also really love Arabic and have been studying the script lately. I listen to a lot of music in Arabic and I don't trust romanizations, so I'd like to learn the lyrics from reading it properly in its Arabic script. I am starting with Modern Standard Arabic and may move onto a dialect later. I studied French and Spanish in school years ago. I fear that I am losing what I have lost, so I am reading and studying to keep both fresh in my mind. I was never fluent in either, but oh well. Due to my obsession with Korean dramas and Korean pop music, I have picked up a little bit of Korean here and there, but I haven't studied it in-depth. I learned how to read a bit of Hangul so I can learn lyrics properly, rather than relying on romanizations. I might want to study Russian and German eventually, but that is not a priority right now. I have been studying the Cyrillic alphabet, which is quite useful. I am also fond of Mandarin and Cantonese, so I think I may study both before I consider Russian or German. I love languages; I am perhaps a bit overzealous. I am interested in everyone else's language endeavors. What languages do you all speak?
  4. What did we learn as spirits in the pre-mortal life? I know this question cannot be answered specifically because the veil has withheld our memory of those things but I would like to see where people stand with just a basic categorization of less, same or more than what we can learn here (secular learning only, obviously experiential knowledge is more here compared to premortal life). I am curious to know if I am way off in left field to think that we as spirit children living with our Heavenly Parents for countless years learned all we could without having experiential knowledge. In other words, we learned a lot! A lot more than any mortal could learn or the combined secular learning of all mortals. And all of that learning will come back to us once the veil is released as well as any experiential knowledge we obtain. So how much do you think we learned in the pre-mortal life? … consider the following statements. President Boyd K. Packer, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, addressed the significance of this doctrine: “There is no way to make sense out of life without a knowledge of the doctrine of premortal life. … When we understand the doctrine of premortal life, then things fit together and make sense.” 2 “Man was also in the beginning with God,” the Lord revealed. “Intelligence, or the light of truth, was not created or made, neither indeed can be” (D&C 93:29). Thus, in the sense that our intelligence has always existed, we had no beginning. But at some distant point in our premortal past, spirit bodies were created for us, and we became, literally, spirit sons and daughters of heavenly parents. And in Gospel Principles; “God is not only our Ruler and Creator; He is also our Heavenly Father. All men and women are literally the sons and daughters of God. “Man, as a spirit, was begotten and born of heavenly parents, and reared to maturity in the eternal mansions of the Father, prior to coming upon the earth in a temporal [physical] body” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph F. Smith [1998], 335). President Joseph Fielding Smith wrote: “It is true that Adam helped to form this earth. He labored with our Savior Jesus Christ. I have a strong view or conviction that there were also others who assisted them. Perhaps Noah and Enoch; and why not Joseph Smith, and those who were appointed to be rulers before the earth was formed? We know that Jesus our Savior was a Spirit when this great work was done. He did all of these mighty works before he tabernacled in the flesh” 13 (see also Abr. 3:23–24). The scriptures tell us that it is impossible for man to be saved in ignorance (see D&C 131:6). This principle is greatly misunderstood. Elder John A. Widtsoe wrote: “There are of course many kinds of knowledge; some of lesser, some of higher value. When Joseph Smith said that a man cannot be saved in ignorance, he meant naturally ignorance of the laws which all together lead to salvation. Such knowledge is of the highest value. It should be sought after first. Then other kinds of knowledge may be added to support and amplify the more direct knowledge of spiritual law. For example, it is a duty of the Church to preach the gospel to all the world. This however requires the aid of railroads, steamships, printing presses, and a multitude of other things that make up our civilization. A knowledge of the gospel is the missionary’s first need, but the other needs, though lesser, help him perform better the divine injunction to teach the gospel to all people” (Evidences and Reconciliations, arr. G. Homer Durham [1987], 224). Knowing that we were “reared to maturity” and some enough to assist in forming the earth, how much do you think we learned before coming here in terms of secular knowledge (as opposed to experiential knowledge)? - Less than what we can learn here? In other words, almost all secular learning is new to us. - About what we can learn here? In other words, our pre-mortal secular learning doesn’t surpass what man is capable of learning. - Or, way more than what we can learn here? (Again, just talking about secular knowledge, the facts, the things that can be memorized, like the Krebs’s cycle and organic chemistry, the names of the planets, what is inside a black hole, calculus etc.)
  5. Hi everyone! I have registered to learn more about LDS. My girlfriend is a devote worshiper and I feel it is important to learn more to grow closer to her. Whilst I believe in god, I am not a member of the LDS Church and havent been a traditional active worshiper. Right now I feel happy in learning more with my curiosity in my level of faith, which has arisen as a result of my relationship. Id be particularly keen to speak to people who have non-LDS partners (or are indeed the non-LDS partner). First post over :)

    Thank you.

Ya'll, I just needed to write to tell some of you, most of you, thank you. You have inspired me, helped me feel the spirit, and made me laugh. I have found that there is more good in people than bad, and even those who would like to say they hate everyone - I know better! (wink wink -you know who you are). Some of you have sent me very sweet, kind messages and they are cherished! You make me a better person! It's been really great and I thank you, thank you, thank you! Keep being yourselves - you have so much to give. :) Prov. 27: 17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
