Not too surprising. So many Utahns have such an unhealthy view (at least publicly) view of sex. Combine that with high obesity rates and high rates of anti-depressants and it's not too flattering of a picture.

Wound way too tight.

Isn't Utah one of the least obese states in the US?

As for sex, I am not sure what constitutes an unhealthy view. If people feel it is absolutely wrong to have sex outside of marriage then I would not call that unhealthy. As for anti-depressants, that has been argued for years without any conclusive evidence that the LDS lifestyle contributes to depression (I'd actually have to say that perhaps the high rates of such prescriptions is based on some members acceptance of "great living through pharmachology" viewpoint while perhaps the high rates are also due to non-members and inactives trying to cope with the LDS culture of Utah).

In addition, something else to consider is that self-medicating is not acceptable in LDS culture, but is to many people. I don't live in Utah, but sometimes after a stressful day, I will hear coworkers say how they are dealing with the stress is to go for a drink. I've even had a few say they will smoke marijuana. Me, I go to the gym or else I have also gone the doctor for antidepressants because that is okay morally to me, but the other options aren't.;)

FYI Dark Chocolate is so much tastier than antidepressants (that's a guess, knowing that dark chocolate is just plain tasty and medicinal emotionally).

While we wait for the mighty MoE to give us the final result, I thought I'd point out some truths that stood out to me.

In the meantime, I just want to point out that non-mormons do not have a monopoly on the perversion market :D

Sad but true.

I'd like to suggest that pornography is a sort of anti-depressant 'drug', if you will. The rush of sexual excitement coupled with supposed 'unlimited possibility' more than pushes all depression aside and engages the body and mind. The same reason that non-LDS, inactive LDS, and jack Mormons might theoretically self-medicate could be the very same reason there's such a prevalence of online pornography subscriptions.

However, I'm personally inclined to believe it's due to one of two factors:

1) Hypocritical Mormons overindulging. When someone has received and been exposed to the truth, falling from that truth will put them in a worse spot than before (Matthew 12:45)- which definitely accounts for a prevalence of addicted behavior and perversion among hypocritical members of the LDS faith.

2) The lack of other pornographic media in Utah. Because of the strict censorship laws (and especially the social stigmas against pornography), patrons of pornography go to the internet to get their 'fix'.

To me, reason #2 seems the most likely explanation.

It would be an interesting topic for study, would it not?

I was talking with a woman a while back who said that she and her friends often get together and watch porn movies. Then she said that one of her friends found porn in the history file of her boyfriend's computer and was mad at him. I asked how in the world she was angry at him when she viewed porn on DVD and she said her friend wasn't so mad that he watched porn as well but that he tried to say it wasn't him that did it.

Now that brings me to what would be an interesting study -- that would be who watches porn the most...a spouse/partner who has a spouse/parner who is totally okay with it and might even view it themselves or a person who is in a relationship with someone who is hyper opposed to it? One would have to assume that the former couple would generally come from more liberal tradition or set of values and the latter would be from a more conservative one. Other variables might include:

Educaton: People (male and female) with a great deal of education would probably be more inclined to experiment with all kinds of things including porn.

Ethnic group: One would assume some groups are more liberal than others in regards to porn or how they view the issue in regards to it being appropriate behavior or not.

Age: Very critical. Older women are probably quite a bit less likely to be tolerant of porn, mid-level ages mixed and younger women quite a bit more tolerant of it. Studies tend to show that women under 30 view porn much more themselves than women over 50. While women access porn almost as much as men in regards to times per year in the younger age women spend less time viewing it in general.

Religion: The crucial factor that we are discussing that would be interesting to examine.

I think that if this sroty is true that the reasons why would be that 1) the young men doing this cannot find a worthy girl to partake, 2) are ashamed so they try to keep it private, 3) the lack of places to buy 4)the reason that the number is high is because even though they arent the only ones watching they might be the only ones paying, remember this counts subcriptions, most others dont pay for it, they steal, definitely better than spreading std's and other disease but still very addictive

I don't think that's it. There are a couple of notorious "adult stores" (as well as strip clubs) in Salt Lake County that have enjoyed a high media profile because of some recent zoning issues. Heck, even Provo had a joint with nude dancers up until about five years ago.

I think this is a lot of it. It would be interesting, as Fiannan intimates (woops--how's THAT for a poor choice of words?), to compare the amount of porn consumed by an otherwise active LDS member engaging in a forbidden pleasure to the amount of porn consumed by a non-Mormon who has grown up with the stuff and really doesn't find it that much of a novelty anymore.

Salt Lake Tribune columnist Robert Kirby had an interesting concern. He wondered if perhaps Mt. Timpanogos might erupt (much like Mt. Vesuvius) in reaction to this latest poll indicating we were number one in on-line porn.

That would be a miracle indeed, since Timpanogos was not formed by volcanic activity!

One of the worst things about pornography is about its insidious addictiveness...how many here have looked up something like "rainbow" forgetting the "other" reference there and seen two nude woman getting frisky?

Another point I am surprised I did not see is the difference between men and woman. Although there is some variation men are more visual and women are more verbal. Than is why men have playboy and women have smutty novels. I know I am extremely verbal myself as a female and need to be careful about my reading material. I was surprised (why?) to see a romance novel in a bookstore for gay men.

And this is not anyone I know to my knowledge but what about the husband or wife with a much stronger libido than the spouse? Who should comply...or compromise? I thinking asking one to do more than he or she wants is unfair but so is asking someone to go without because that can lead to temptation. That must be a difficult situation that requires honesty, emotional safety, kindness, understanding, and firmness.

And what is up with violence? I do not seek this out but there are people telling women to fantasize about rape. That can't be healthy.

OK I will stop and I hope that was not too much. Feel free to strike this as I do not wish to offend.

No right answers to what you asked...but...it is called a working marriage....those are the things a husband and wife need to talk about and work out.

EXCERPT: The most porn-watching ZIP codes in Utah, "with unexpectedly high subscriptions relative to their population and broadband usage," are 84766 in Sevier County, 84112 in Salt Lake County, 84018 in Morgan County, 84006 in southwest Salt Lake County, and 84536 in San Juan County.

I took a look at the "study". This is, by far, the most bias and politically motivated piece of statistical analysis I have ever seen. This is propaganda clear and simple. I am amazed at the DN for jumping and printing this without looking at the data set.

The most disgusting part is his intimation about the correlation of same sex legislation and pornography use.
