Heck in a Handbasket: My Kids Go Here

One of the latest issues to confront our teens and in my case pre-teens is called s*xting.

Here is a link to the incident at my child's middle school:

O.C. middle school students were busted for something called "sexting" - 3/17/09 - Los Angeles-Southern California-LA Breaking News, Weather, Traffic, Sports - abc7.com

I had yet another discussion with my children about how our body is a temple. My daughter says the only two topics I discuss anymore are puberty and the gospel.

I don't remember having "the talk" with my mother. In fact, we still haven't had one. But I would venture that I discuss things of a virtuous nature at least once a week. No other way to protect them.

How are you talking to yours?

None of our kids have cell phones. We explained to them that the viewing of sexually explicit materials, regardless of the origin or media, is called pornography. We had some conversations and read the GA discourses from past conferences. We have not heard anything at our local schools as of today, not that it could not happen.

my teaching my children about chastity started right from birth by using baby massage and asking them if they wanted to be touched, you make a sign I found by about 9 or 10 weeks they let you know which bits they liked massaged and which bits they didn't

Then we moved onto teaching them how beautiful and amazing they are and that they are children of our Heavenly Father, about how much he loves them and he made them.

My daughter at 5 understands one day she will have breasts and periods, because Heavenly Father made her that way so she could have babies. She has a basic idea of how babies are made and that its something only Mummies and Daddies do.

Basically i am aiming never to have 'the talk' but that my kids will see growing up and respecting their body as normal

Strange...the other day I was channel surfing and I came across a Chinese movie showing a bunch of naked boys in the PE changing rooms all focused on each other's...well, you know.

Now this was not a porn movie in any respect but if one of these teens had a copy of this film would they be charged with possession of child porn?

If you had two teens whose families both belonged to the same nudist resort, and one of the teens had been sick and couldn't attend his friend's sister's wedding there, so he sent some pics to the other teen, would that constitute spreading child pornography if the group picture had pre-18 year olds featured?

Just questions for thought.

As for the sexting thing, come on...if someone sends a nude photo to someone else can't we at least have a legal system that can tell the difference between intent and not as well as examine the context of the photo? There's a huge difference between some teens sending a pic to each other of a local skinny dipping excursion at a local hot spring and showing pics intended for sexual arrousal.

From a legal standpoint possession of the material is against the law, regardless of the intent. Sexually explicit material is legal as long as it does not involved minors. The same as in sexual behavior.

It always baffles me how slow the media is to catch on to these trends.

The majority of my classmates (and i'll be honest, myself included) "sexted" regularly in junior high, that was ten years ago. Several of my friends got expelled for sending naked pics of each other during class.

Isn't the best way to prevent this from happening is being aware of it BEFORE it goes down? Parents need to get with the program, "sexting" is in no way new. It sounds like the parents in this thread are way more informed than the ones around my area...

I'm always frustrated when news outlets show a sudden concern for instances like these, and get parents all riled up. It's usually years behind the trend has boomed. For example: the local newspaper in my area just ran a story on "the danger of raves" last week. Raves? Are you kidding me? Nobody raves anymore, it's dead here. Where was that article in 2001 when I was at a rave once a month? Sheesh...

The famous statue of David needs to be included then. Since David was under the age of 18 when he slew Golaith then it depicts a naked teenager (under 18 at that).

If we throw out intent then let's go all the way with it then.

Just don't give your kids cell phones. Problem solved. I didn't have my own cell phone until I was 18, and it didn't have texting. They are convenient, yes, but not necessary. My little sister bought a pre-paid cell phone. It was a waste of money and got her into more trouble than it was worth. She seriously spent like 80 dollars in 2 days to get cell phone minutes. My parents watched in awe as she burnt through the money she earned from her job.

That's art though, from what I understand drawings (or what have you) aren't covered, if one was inclined one could draw pictures of teenage (or younger) kids all one wants as no children were harmed in doing so (as opposed to actual pictures) is the theory. Kinda like how one can write erotic fiction about rape but one can't actually perform it or one is in trouble.

Also, at least from my understanding, legally speaking nude != porn (think Mother taking pictures of little Timmy in the tub), so even if art was covered unless the statue is sexual explicit/suggestive then it still wouldn't be covered. The tricky thing about this is there is no hard legal line between just nude and pornography:

In 1964, Justice Potter Stewart tried to explain "hard-core" pornography, or what is obscene, by saying, "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced . . . ut I know it when I see it . . . "

This article talks about it, and is where I pulled the quote.

And that's the danger -- some teen takes a pic of him/herself or friends at the beach (assuming they might be nude or topless in a hypothetical case) and sends the pic to a friend then they are:

A) Just showing a friend the fun time they had at the beach, or

B) Guilty of the creation and distribution of child pornography.

In my opinion, unless said teen is asking for money for the pictures, or is engaging in a pose that suggests, or actually shows, a sexual context then there should be no legal actions allowed against the person.

This weekend, my oldest decided that she wanted to have a slumber party here with some of her friends.

9 teenage girls got off the bus yesterday.

I had forgotten about this thread until I walked out on the front porch and found several of the girls standing outside, texting whomever.

I asked them, "Ya'll aren't sexting are you?"

They looked at me strangely and some of them said, huh?

I said, "Ya'll only send text messages, right? Ya'll don't send naked pictures back and forth between each other do you?"

The response I got from them was, "Ewwww! No! That's just nasty! Why would anyone send naked pictures to someone? Yuck! No! We just talk..."

LOL!

All I can say is "Thank God, their all Country Girls!"

True GRITS!

These teenage girls were just as surprised as I was to hear about this type of occurrence.

Lot's of folks may make fun of slow country people, but I'm gonna tell you now, there is a lot to be said for not being so much into the popular know that goes on in big cities.

Of course, not all is perfect in the country either. But I was thrilled to find that these children had no idea what I was asking them and they all thought it was yucky to be sending such over their phones.

Personally, I have no problem with nude bodies, but I have great respect for them. Although, nudity does not bother me so much, I am modest, but when it comes right down to it a butt is a butt is a butt...Hopefully we all have them and they are healthy.
