Reference Search: 1 Nephi 17:45

45 Ye are swift to do iniquity but slow to remember the Lord your God. Ye have seen an angel, and he spake unto you; yea, ye have heard his voice from time to time; and he hath spoken unto you in a still small voice, but ye were past feeling, that ye could not feel his words; wherefore, he has spoken unto you like unto the voice of thunder, which did cause the earth to shake as if it were to divide asunder.

Quotes for Discussion

The first step in the repentance process has always been simply to recognize that we have done wrong. If we are so hedged about by pride, rationalization, machismo, or a misdirected sense of self-esteem as to prevent us from ever admitting that we are part of the problem, we are in trouble. We then may not even know of our need to repent. We will have no idea whether the Lord is pleased with us or not and may become “past feeling.” (1 Ne. 17:45.) But all men, everywhere, must repent. (See 3 Ne. 11:32.) To fail to do so is to perish. (See Luke 13:3; Hel. 7:28.)

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> True religion is a feeling. It is common in anti-Mormon literature for attacks to be made on prayer and on trusting one’s feelings as sources for obtaining truth. In the realm of spiritual understanding both are fundamental. Truth is felt. Falsehood is often clothed in erudite and sophisticated arguments. One does not have to be able to refute the argument to know that it is false. Truth feels good; falsehood does not.

Christ spoke of the inability of the wicked to “understand with their heart” (Matthew 13:15), while the righteous “understood in their hearts” things too marvelous to utter (3 Nephi 19; 33-34). Describing the spirit of revelation for Joseph Smith, the Lord said, “I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart” (D&C 8:2). Because of their wickedness, such understanding was lost to Nephi’s rebellious brothers.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Giving Blessings a Tax on Strength<o:p></o:p>

Elder Jedediah M. Grant enquired of me the cause of my turning pale and losing strength last night while blessing children. I told him that I saw that Lucifer would exert his influence to destroy the children that I was blessing, and I strove with all the faith and spirit that I had to seal upon them a blessing that would secure their lives upon the earth; and so much virtue went out of me into the children, that I became weak, from which I have not yet recovered; and I referred to the case of the woman touching the hem of the garment of Jesus. (Luke, 8th chapter.) The virtue here referred to is the spirit of life; and a man who exercises great faith in administering to the sick, blessing little children, or confirming, is liable to become weakened. (March 14, 1843.) D.H.C. 5:303.

It is also said that knowledge comes from brains and visdom from heart. Our hearts know the truth, that is why, as we read something or are tought of something about the gospel, we know it is true, even though we can not explain it to the brain. But we cannot understand whet is tod to us, if we dont humble ourselves. Only a humble heart is on the same wavelength with God and thus is able to understand the secrets of eternity.

Many atheists close their hearts and dont believe in what the heart tells them as they think the brain is the onlyu thing that can reveal the truth in this world. As long as they do not believe the heart can know something and that the feelings from the heart are true, as long they are not able to know, to hear, to feel.

There have been times in my younger life tha I was inactive and not doing what I was suppose to ... Even then I knew I was wacthed over by my Father in Heaven... THose small whispers to my heart finally broke through my running from the truth.... I never doubted the church just my ability to be a positive effective person in it..... This battle I face daily but this scripture and quotes really put me back in time remembering when I was stuggling with my beliefs not in the church but myself in the church.. I was too damaged... The still small voice and the wonderful people Father in Heaven put in my life never let me go to far down the wrong path or get too far away from the church... I am so lucky...and grateful
