Porn too close to home

It is imperative that you talk with your children and those that you may have some influence on about avoiding pornography. A recent news story was way to close to home for me. Here in Happy Valley (the term used for Utah County) porn was viewed at school by 5th graders who used a term the filters could not block.

One child is saying it is difficult to get the images he saw out of his head. The fact-of-the-matter is that he will never get those images out of his head. He will now have to learn how to deal with those images. I hope and pray that the parents use this time to educate their children on what to do if they see porn and more importantly to come home and talk about it.

This is why it is so important to learn about and understand pornography addiction. This is a multi-billion dollar industry that is out to get your friends, family and children addicted so they can increase their profit.

ok will probably be alone on an LDS board but seem to remember my class mates and I indulged in anything vaguely pornographic or graphic basically anything that someone got their hands on, at about 10 or 11 it has no need to be made into such a big deal in thier lives and by doing so people have insured they don;t forget it, because my Mum taught me anything I was exposed to then was no big deal. I doubt my kids will make it to their teen years without at least a brief peak at Page 3 of a national newspaper. What is important to me is its no big deal and they grow into chaste adults, and can come to me for advice

Teaching your children so they know what sex is and what chastity is early in their life is in my opinion best way to help them say no and or move on from this sort of thing that has happened in schools since Ancient Greece

Very good. I hope you are teaching them what to do if they run into porn in the schools. If it was showed to them by a friend, what should they do? If they see it while doing research somewhere else, what should they do?

One of the young men in our ward was researching an assignment on the school computer and, you know it, up pops porn from a site. He said he immediately shutdown the computer. I hope he did. When we respond immediately with a course of action that we have determined ahead of time, the image will not stick. It is looking at it for any extended period of time. I can speak from experience. I saw an image from a magazine at the age of 16 and that image has stuck with me my entire life. However there has been times when porn has popped up on my computer and I deleted it immediately and I honestly could not tell you want those images were.

One of the steps I have taken when doing research is always looking at the url (the web address) before I scroll down or open the page completely. There is generally a slight delay before images begin popping up.

In addition, we need to be talking more openly with our younger kids about how those images "steal the spirit" and that they are complicit when they make the choice to look.

My daughter say some disturbing images on TV during a commercial advertising the show Nip/Tuck. We talked about how it made her feel and then said a prayer together to ask for guidance.

I think a lot depends on what the image is. For instance, what the heck is so damaging about seeing a naked man or woman? Kids have been sneaking peaks at National Geographic for years to see naked native women (seems it has always been acceptable to see naked people who aren't white in such publications). In fact, I remember seeing films in high school where naked African women were shown smashing corn...you get the point, lots of movement. Yet that wasn't porn. So why should seeing a naked white woman playing volleyball be considered porn?

When I was a kid the garage my dad got car work done had those early 1970s-style pinups all ver the walls. Yes, these were educational -- at least you got to see what a naked woman looked like. So what? I don't think that it psychologically damaged anyone who saw them.

So something a kid sees on a page 3 paper I would not make a fuss over really except to say that it wasn't a good use of time. Now if someone at a young age sees porn featuring adults engaged in sex I do think that can be harmful as much of the porn features group sex and/or same sex relations. I personally think much of the experimentatin in lesbian sex nowadays (it's probably way more common than you think) is due to young women viewing porn that features attractive women engaged in this activity. Perhaps the reason for more interest in threesomes is due to porn giving the idea that this is just a fun activity.

Yes, porn is damaging but it's not the anatomy per se that is the problem. Heck, you could show a ballet in the nude and it would not really give a negative message (one Russian Tsar enjoyed this form of entertainment). However, it's when you have people commiting fornication and adultery that it becomes porn.

By the way, I am sure any kid knows this but there is no way to prevent porn from coming into a computer. All you have to do to bypass a porn filter is to use a less commonly known language (i.e. Finnish) for searches -- I knew a kid who was an exchange student at my son's school who told all the students the words so they could get around the surf block program. I thought it was hillarious since the surf block would not let you access research on gay marriage, breast cancer or Right to Life so that little jab at authority was amusing.

Point is, if your kids (I mean when) wind up on pornographic web sites take the time to discuss issues as they relate to fornication and adultery. If the site is merely nudity then don't freak out or you likely will foster fixation and perhaps even lay the foundation for a fetish.

try looking for pictures of sheep and goats lol I was researching for a lesson on the parable some of those images were interesting - but to be honest I don't remember any specifics, it wasn't a big deal just closed the search down, or maybe making the mistake of typing in man.com instead of msn.com  believe me I am sure most of us will wander onto some site or other whilst using the net, isn't it better our kids have the reaction NO I don't want that and just close it, switch it over or turn it off. It doesn't matter if they innocently come across something whether it be walking in on your parents or something pornographic on the web, what is important is they know to say NO to that and deal with it the same way they would when their friends at school bring in Dad's copy of Playboy

Thing is because I was brought up it was no big deal just close the site and walk away it is no big deal, the images are not blazoned on my brain, I have remembered the incident but not the images, I know to be more careful typing in researching for farm animals and typing in domain names.

do you really not see the difference in women playing volleyball and a national geographic?

Naked women, one dancing around or grinding corn and the other playing volleyball. One black the other generally white. Any other differences?

What, why I refused to have sex prior to marriage (lost a couple of girlfriends over that one) or that I have never cheaten on my wife?

one being how they live their life, in no way do they fit the media version of "sexy", and intended to educate.... the other probably having received plastic surgery for the purpose of fitting an unrealistic media version of sexy engaging in activities intended to arouse sexual desire.

a person doesn't have to break the law of chastity to be obsessed with or have a skewed view of sexuality

So if they are totally natural (no cosmetics, operations...heck, hippie women, hairy underarms and all) then it's not pornographic I assume.

Gee, what brought that on????:(

intent of the picture/video. one is real the other is fake. one intends to educate and show reality. one is intended to create sexual desire. i'm not saying all aboriginal women are ugly (was the intent of your comment, implying that i said if they are ugly it's ok but if they look good it's porn?) it's not about what the women look like but what they are doing and the intent. there is only one reason to be playing volleyball nude.

Every time you take your kids to a reasonably populated beach, you'll see women naked from the waist up (and not much covering below either) playing volleyball and pretty much everything else you can do on a beach. You'll never stop them seeing this stuff in their youth and quite frankly I'm not entirely sure it's a good thing to be so preventative - if you do this they may become curious and purposely start looking for it. This is how a lot of fetishes start, as Fiannan pointed out. By all means block the extremely sexually explicit sites, but trying to prevent them from seeing anything that can be considered immoral can probably do more damage then good. Of course they mustn't look for the stuff on purpose, but don't make too big a deal out of the stuff they can reasonably be expected to see in real life during their youth. Just because it happens to be on the internet, it does not make it any worse.

I don't think the media have helped in this respect, they have painted the internet to be some wolf in sheeps clothing waiting to grab their children, scaring parents who have little understanding of what the internet actually is.

While not 100% related to the exact topic of this thread, I think this story I read back in January posted on slashdot under the tag "a sudden outbreak of common sense" says it pretty accurately: Slashdot | Internet Not Really Dangerous For Kids After All

Education is the key!

Educate your children, family, friends etc. and have them have them create a reaction sequence. For example it pops up on computer, immediately shut it off. This is the plan if it pops up so naturally they will do it.

Teach your everyone to have a plan or plan to fail. Just like all things, if you want to be successful, you need to have a plan in place.

When this was first reported on the news here in Utah, the news reported that authorities were considering charging the two 5th graders with a felony child abuse charges. I heard one of the mothers talk on the Doug Wright show about how the situation was handled.

I got angry. It sounded more like the school went on the offensive to protect itself than helping the children and families.

I'd like to know where the teacher was? I also hope the school is offering counseling to all the kids and include the two boys who searched a word that should have been blocked. I know it can be done... WSU blocks work. Why doesn't American Forks?

Has anyone heard what the County Attorney decided?

Unfortunately, anyone can get around any filter. I will not mention them here.

They did a thorough search on their computers history for the past and have realized this is not the first time porn was pulled up. One of the problems is the schools need to stay up to date with technology. They have Macs which have some of the best filtering software around, however, you need to be on the latest O.S., which means money and with the recent cut back of funds, I doubt any will be funneled to update computers.

Sounds like you have more information on just what the word was, 'cuz I just scanned the article and don't see it mentioned. Are we talking a direct word (aka 'porn' or some such) or something with multiple meanings (kitty cat, rooster...)?

I just remember back in school going to the computer lab to do a report on a Spinning Jenny and it pulling up a bunch of links for Jenny McCarthy. Of course I had better sense than to click on them and I doubt this kind of stuff was as big on the IT people's radar and experience back then. Anyway, guess my point is, you can search almost any word and find pornography if you look hard enough. Heck, there is another message board I read where people were having a contest to type in their name into Google (and admittedly with safe search off) and see how many pages it took to find nudity.
