BYU-Idaho Dissolves Student Political Parties

Recommended Posts

REXBURG, Idaho—Officials at Brigham Young University-Idaho have dissolved the student-run College Republicans and College Democrats political organizations.

School spokesman Andy Cargal said the move is to make sure the university's political neutrality policy is being followed.

The Rexburg-based university is a private institution run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"We feel that it is in the best interest of our university to be politically neutral," Cargal told the Standard Journal of Rexburg. "While we actively encourage our students to be politically active and join political parties of their choice, we feel that BYU-Idaho itself can't be a sponsor of partisan political groups or activities."

Yeah, I read about that too. I have mixed feelings. On the one hand I think it's terrible to shut down university support for the reps because they were doing 'too good', but on the other hand there comes a point where maybe there needs to be a time of rest. Even the losing fighter in a boxing match (dems in this case) gets a break between rounds.

Yeah because not allowing sandals, shorts, long hair, facial hair, immodest clothing, cursing, sex before marriage, drinking, smoking, tattoos, multiple piercings, or colored hair has "neutrality" written all over it.

I'm sure nobody views the University as a 1950's-like staunchly traditional and conservative institution....

But POLITICAL GROUPS.... OH NO!!! That might make people think we are idealistically biased!

Here is an interesting twist to basically the same situation:

Liberty University bans College Dems

Posted: 06:23 PM ET

(CNN) – Liberty University, the evangelical school in Virginia founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, is drawing heat Friday for its decision to revoke recognition of the College Democrats' chapter on campus.

According to the Lynchburg News & Advance, the school decided a week ago the organization "stood against the moral principles" held by the school and therefore could no longer be sanctioned.

Maria Childress, the staff adviser to the club, told the paper the school — which opposes abortion rights and gay marriage — had issues with the Democratic Party platform.

Childress says she was told by Mark Hine, the vice president of student affairs, that "'You can't be a Democrat and be a Christian and be a university representative.'"

In a conference call with reporters Friday, Terry McAuliffe — the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee who is running for governor of Virginia — sharply criticized the move.

The university did not return CNN's request for comment.
