Hackers hijacked the Church News Twitter account last weekend and Twitter staffers took down the site early today because the infiltrators had gained total control over the feed.

Charlie Crane, director of interactive media for the Deseret News, said he realized Sunday night that the Church News account had been compromised.

"We tried to get it back," he said, but he soon realized that the hacker had even been able to change the password and lock him out.

Lol, I like how he said he was skeptical of twitter, when it was likely the LDS twitter feed administrators fault. He/she probably logged into the account on a computer infected with a keylogger virus. It's becoming increasingly common in recent months - people will them use the "hacked" accounts to send spam.

For an experienced hacker, the following list applies.

Difficulty of hacking Linux OS/Apache: Difficult.

Difficulty of hacking php/other server side programming language: Moderately Difficult.

Difficulty of hacking Windows desktop OS: often close to trivial.

Edit: If I were running the Church's twitter account I'd post on it using nothing less than one of the BSD variants, or a very secure Linux.

The Salt Lake City Weekly was a bit more explicit with their reporting. It said one of the Deseret News reporters was curious so he did a follow to @evaporn. That of course linked it to the Deseret News Twitter account so everyone could follow along.

.

Hmmm... so the account was either really hacked or the church are saying it was hacked to save embarassment? Interesting.

Yes unfortunately the church uses windows as a rule. The twitter feed will have been run by marketing, not IT support. So the person in charge of the feed won't be aware of the potential issues and maybe even logged into it on a public computer.

This is the main reason why I dual-boot and use a Linux Operating System. I prefer to use Linux Ubuntu 8.10 when browsing the Internet as it is so much more secure against malicious software.
