EXCERPT: SALT LAKE CITY - For the first time in nearly 180 years, the LDS Church has an entire building dedicated to its archives. The newly completed Church History Library contains rare mormon artifacts, including a first edition copy of the Book of Mormon. "We have everything from wax cyclinders, wire recordings, reel to reel tapes, cassette tapes," said Richard Turley of the LDS Church History Department. Reporters were given a tour inside the new facility Thursday.

The dedication of the 230,000 square foot state-of-the-art library represents the culmination of a long line of storage facilities for Church historical documents which had very simple beginnings. Elder Marlin K. Jensen, Church Historian and Recorder, explained, “The available facilities for housing the Church historical collections and work have not always been as grand as those provided by this new library.”
