Missionaries

A missionary is someone who has decided to spend two years of their life getting up at 6 AM, studying scriptures and teaching others what they know to be true.

It's exclusively voluntary, though they have to have a degree of worthiness to go teach: No problems with pornography, chastity, drunkenness, etc.

Those two years, in most cases, are dedicated entirely to spreading the gospel and is done just because the Missionaries love God and want others to share in their happiness.

There are occasional exceptions, as per anything, but for the most part, missionaries are great people.

In addition to Funky's comments, I would just add that first and foremost the LDS church wants to obey the NT command of Christ to spread the gospel to the four quarters of the earth. And they need missionaries to do that. 19 is an interesting age. Some say it interfers with educational or other pursuits. I think it may be a good age because its the only time of life when young people don't have marital or vocational commitments. It is also a time of great personal development and mission life affords a good foundation of spiritual growth and understanding that helps to support what adulthood and life in the world brings.

Missionaries in the church do lots of different things with their time based upon the place and assignment of their call. Some are proslyting missions which cover media and personal contacting. Some are wellfare or service missions. Some are medical missions or family history ones. Some travel far from home and learn foreign languages. And others serve in their hometowns or home countries.
