Traveler
what are the views of our church on those who have branched off from the church, besides the FLDS.Also is it true that the church of christ is the original church? The original church was established with Adam. Since Adam there have been a number of times that the original church was abandoned and thus it was required that the original church be restored. The classic term used for abandonment of the original church is called “Apostasy”. Those that abandon G-ds priesthood and covenants, for whatever reason and for whatever else are correctly called apostates. Just_A_Guy
what are the views of our church on those who have branched off from the church, besides the FLDS.I don't think we really have one other than "we're right and they're wrong".Also is it true that the church of christ is the original church?Every LDS offshoot (or "restorationist sect", as some LDS historians call them) thinks it's the original (or at least, doctrinally correct) version of the church God restored through Joseph Smith. We certainly think so, and I'll wager the RLDS/Communities of Christ, Church of Christ Temple Lot, Bickertonite, Apostolic United Brethren, FLDS, Centennial Park, ad infinitum make the same claim regarding their own churches. Maureen
what are the views of our church on those who have branched off from the church, besides the FLDS.Also is it true that the church of christ is the original church? Hello Cameron,Wikipedia gives this information:Today, there are many schism organizations who regard themselves as a part of the Latter Day Saint movement, though in most cases they do not acknowledge the other branches as valid and regard their own tradition as the only correct and authorized version of Smith's church. The vast majority of Latter Day Saints belong to the largest denomination, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which claims 13 million members worldwide. The second-largest denomination is the Community of Christ, which reports over 250,000 members. The third largest is The Church of Jesus Christ, with fewer than 13,000 adherents.Latter Day Saint movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaThere is a link at the bottom of this wikipedia page titled Dissent and Schism in the Early Church...; I would recommend checking it out to get a better picture.M. Maureen
The Church of Christ (then known as the RLDS) was not formed until quite a few years after Joseph's death. In the 1860s, IIRC. Two members of the original LDS church formed the RLDS around 1852, asked JS III if he was interested in being prophet in 1856, and he finally agreed to it in 1860.Our History - Years of Confusion and DisorganizationM. deseretgov
The Church Joseph smith organized in 1830 was called the Church of Christ. Over time it used some varied names including the Church of the Latter Day Saints. Finally the church's name was established by revelation as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. After the death of Joseph Smith the church broke apart following after different leaders. I don't think we will make much progress in building the City of Zion or any of the other important events, prior to the coming of Christ, until we can become unified again.
