Can an excommunicated member still access their stake and ward websites on lds.org? I know you have to be a member to set up a password, would you lose your access if you became excommunicated?

Having an LDS account is dependent on having a membership record number and a confirmation date, both of which would be invalidated upon excommunication.

so what if you already had an account and became excommunicated? would your account be deactivated?

I think Wingnut answered your question in the post above yours.

Gotcha. Wish me luck on my excommunication tomorrow, and I'll let you know on Mon -- hey what are you trying to get me into?!!

I didn't know they planed excommunications for a certain date. I'm honestly not very familiar with how they work other than sitting in a room with a certain amount of people. I always thought there was just a church court trial (without lawyers etc) to see what they will do. If that is true, then you may not be excommunicated and maybe this will just blow over. Good luck either way.

If I am wrong about what an excommunication is like, please feel free to correct me. I've never personally seen one. I'm honestly not even sure what all of the reasons are they decide to hold one.

I think Mystic's confusion (and I can relate) is that once the account is set up, is it still contingent on the membership record. I know you can't get an account without the membership record. But what about after that?

Are there two database tables being kept? One of all potential website members and one of actual website members? (in which case you can be removed from one without affecting the other.) Or is your username and password just two more properties for an alread-existing entry? (in which case you can be removed from the website without it affecting your church membership, but if you're removed from the church membership, you'll also be barred from the site.)

On the new system the Church has been constructing, your LDS Account is tied to your membership record. There are certain fields in your LDS Account profile that will propogate to your membership record and vice versa. If you do not have a membership record number, that link will not work.

Don't despair, however, because there are things that can be done. Talk to your stake clerk and stake technology specialist. They should know more, but I believe you can set up a non-member record (it creates a record number that incorporates your ward's unit number (any time you change wards, you'd have to have a new record created). I couldn't answer if one of these numbers would be able to provide access to unit websites or not, but that's what your stake clerk and technology specialists are supposed to know.

Also, earlier this year (or late last year) LDS Account was reconfigured to require a membership number and your birth date (confirmation date is no longer required).

I just wondered how that would work so that you could still continue to do family history. I realize you can do it without being a member, but you don't have access to the LDS section for ordinances etc.

I finally got around to looking into this more, and the answer is

YES, you may register an LDS Account and not be a member. I don't know exactly what it will look like and what privileges it will give you. But you may register for an LDS Account.

Go to ldsaccount.lds.org and click "register for an account"

Above the fields that asks for your membership number, there is a link that reads "If you are not a member of the LDS Church please click here to skip this page."

Click on that to go through the rest of the registration.

Enjoy!

I am not a member and have registered but I can't access the ward info like I wanted to. It's very limited access. I ordered from the LDS catalog and I needed the account to do that. Other than that, I can't see any advantage to having an account.

ldscatalog.com and wards.lds.org use different authentications. No LDS Account will work on the catalog, and no catalog username will allow access to stake and ward websites.

I'm registered at both places. My account at lds.org only lets me access what I could already access anyway. I really don't know why they register nonmembers. I was very disappointed and a little frustrated.

This is very related to this post but not sure it addresses the new Family Search. If a member is excommunicated (granted, they are no longer a "member"), can they access that website with the temple ordinance dates?

If so, that's great.

If not, isn't that kinda silly considering that person may be genuinely trying to work on "church stuff," keeping themselves distracted from things in "life" that may have caused them to be excommunicated? It seems counter-productive to me but maybe I am just "slow." LOL
