Prometrium during pregnancy?

Here's my history; my husband and I have been married for 9 months; back in February we found out I was pregnant. At 10 weeks in April, I miscarried. Never found out why; it was only my first pregnancy and I was told that generally it's more common for first-timers to result in miscarriages and that then these women go on to have normal and healthy pregnancies thereafter.

Well, 2 weeks ago my husband and I found out I was 3 weeks pregnant (amazing how a blood test can determine something like that so early!). Last week I was put on Prometrium, which is a progesterone hormone supplement to help support the baby before the placenta takes over.

Has anyone ever used this and had success? (Or not? I'm interested in hearing any comments to be made by *women who have experience with this.) I'm very nervous to have gotten pregnant after only one cycle after my miscarriage and though my husband and I pray and hope for the best, and ultimately have to leave this in Heavenly Father's hands, we're still nervous because we're wanting so badly to have this little one enter our home in 7 and a half months. :)

I have not been on Prometrium but I was on Progesterone in oil which was administered to me through an intermuscular shot every day. Currently I am in my 10th week, quickly approaching my 11th and my fertility doctor took me off the Progesterone at the beginning of week 10. I should be able to tell you if it was successful in a few weeks once I reach my 2nd trimester. This is my first pregnancy as well and as we had to go through IVF to get pregnant I am more than a little nervous about the whole thing ending in a miscarrage. I wish you the best of luck with your pregnancy and hope that the medicine works for you.

Tarnished, I hope all goes well for you. I had heard that progesterone could be administered in a few different ways, a shot being one of them; it sounds like that seemed to help you out as you're nearing the 2nd trimester sooner rather than later. I'm sure that's a huge relief for you! I know it will be a relief for my husband and I to reach that point... too bad it's 7 weeks away, lol.

I remember being where you are though, because it was IVF I knew exactly what day the embryos were put in me, then I had to wait for two weeks to see if we had a positive pregnancy. About a week after we found out the answer was yes I started spotting. I seriously freaked out. Thankfully the spotting was light and stopped after one day, but it gave me a huge scare. My husband and I are afraid of doing much of anything for fear that it might hurt the baby in some way and cause a miscarriage. And the time does seem to pass so slowly during the 1st trimester, or at least it has for me.

There were a few times during the time period when I was taking the progesterone where I used vaginal suppositories, I am not sure what the exact name for it was but I do know it was progesterone in some form. I only used those when my husband was not able to give me a shot due to being out of town. As much as I hated the shots I stuck with them because the doctor said that they got me more of the progesterone than the suppositories because they went straight into the muscle. It also made it less of a problem if you ended up missing a day because you still had progesterone stored in your muscle.

I don't know what method of getting progesterone into you your doctor is taking. I hope that it works and that you and your husband have a safe and full term pregnancy. We have been trying for 10 years for a child so we know just how exciting and anxiety causing trying for a baby can be. Good luck, I will keep you in my prayers.

I haven't taken in pregnancy but I have taken it to start my period. I have diabetes and PCOS so it took us two years to get pregnant. The first trimester seems to last forever! I am 23 weeks and still worry about something going wrong. I have had some major bleeding due to a extremely sensitive cervix which really freaked me out.

I hope everything works out for the best for you two!

Miscarriages are more common than most people would ever guess. Quite often a 'late' period of menstration is nothing more than an early term miscarriage. Having been intimately involved with a triple board certified specialist physician who dealt in these types of issues, I sent a lot of time in discussion on this topic; especially since she was almost fanatically investigating what she believed to be her own infertilitly.

I have heard of the hormone suppliment you're being administered. Its relatively new but the data seems to support the conclusion that its beneficial.

I have used it.

I had my first child, no problems, no complications. Then I had several years where I didn't get pregnant while trying. I got pregnant and m/c'd at about 7 weeks. About a year later I had another m/c at about 9 weeks.

The next time I got pregnant (first cycle trying after reading more about fertility and charting) I went right to the midwife and she prescribed Prometrium. I took it and pregnancy went fine. Gosh, that was in 2003/4.

A few years later I got pregnant again. Did NOT use Prometrium this time. I did have bleeding at 11 weeks from a uterine hematoma. YIKES! Nothing to do with hormone levels, though. I was able to keep that pregnancy and deliver a healthy baby...breech.

So, I am not sure if Prometrium actually helped me stay pregnant or not. I am glad I took it because it made me feel like I was doing all I could. Gave me a little peace of mind. I didn't take it with my last pregnancy because I didn't feel it was necessary for me. If I had felt I should than I would have asked for a scrip.

Good luck! Miscarriage is a very traumatic thing to experience. I wish you well and a healthy pregnancy!!!
