This has been reported several times, but I guess it is finally a go since they have a set opening and venue...

The Book of Mormon

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A satirical musical about the Book of Mormon and LDS missionaries has been scheduled to open on Broadway in March of 2011.

'The Book of Mormon' is a stage musical written and produced by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creative force behind Comedy Central's animated series South Park.

According to an article in Broadway.com, The Book of Mormon will open at the Eugene O'Neill Theater with previews set to begin on February 24, 2011, with opening night on March 24.

Parker and Stone have often poked fun at the culture and doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in several episodes of South Park and other projects.

According to Broadway.com, the play will follow two missionaries as they face several hazards while spreading the Mormon message in Africa.

Anyone here been on an African Mission for the Church?

I hope it's great, and funny and heartwarming.

When that silly, anti-Catholic book The Da Vinci code came out, people flocked to the Catholic church and joined in larger numbers than they have in a long time.

I'm willing to give it a shot. Trey dated a Mormon girl and has shown that he likes them. They're always the sweet, naive type who genuinely like other people. That's a stereotype I want pushed.

Did you really say this about something the creators of South Park are doing with a straight face? I have no doubt this "musical" is going to involve copious amounts of blasphemy.

I didn't know there was anything other than the South Park episode, other than this.

There is Orgazmo, the story of an LDS missionary who falls in to the seedy world of pornography playing a superhero. He's a straight-arrow superhero who believes in waiting for marriage and never breaks that rule despite temptations and suggestions to the contrary. He doesn't lie, cheat or steal.

There is the South Park episode where people are in hell arguing that they shouldn't be there because they were a devout (x). "I'm sorry. You were all wrong. The correct answer was 'Mormons'. Yes. Mormons were the correct religion."

There was the Superfriends episode where Joseph Smith was a happy-go-lucky weather controller.

There was the episode you're referring to.

Parker has stated his understanding on atheism as,[23] "Basically ... out of all the ridiculous religion stories which are greatly, wonderfully ridiculous — the silliest one I've ever heard is, 'Yeah ... there's this big giant universe and it's expanding, it's all gonna collapse on itself and we're all just here just 'cause ... just 'cause'. That, to me, is the most ridiculous explanation ever."

He's spiritual, but without the push to go further in to religion.

I think the title alone will kill it on Broadway. What makes them think they can charge Broadway prices for people to come and see "The Book of Mormon" in a posh theatre when we often have a hard time giving away the real thing for free?

Do you think it might help if our missionaries utilized comical song and dance routines? Couldn't hurt.

I think if I were given enough time and perhaps a Guggenheim grant to help stir the creative mayo and ketchup, I could come up with the choreography for a piece about Fry Sauce.
