Not because they are evil, but they can become a distraction. Sometimes missionaries get discouraged or bored of the work, and they might end up spending their day playing games instead of doing their work. Maybe a better idea would be a care package with small household items (toothpaste, deodorant) or food snacks that might not be available where he is serving.
