I liked it myself, but it does describe the life of a Geisha, which is basically the equivalent of an escort in the US. Though sexual relations is not exactly a big part of being a Geisha is can be part of her work. In the book her virginity is bought by the highest bidder, it follows her life as a Geisha, which I found to be interesting. In Japan the word Geisha literally means Artist, Geisha see themselves as performing entertainers. Their main role is to entertain male guests with dance, playing of music, and serving of tea as well as pleasant conversation. They can choose if they want to have a more intimate relationship with their customers.

The book follows the life of a girl who is sold to an Okiya (a geisha house) she is trained and becomes a famous geisha, it follows her progression and follows the inner politics and fighting that sometimes were part of the geisha life.

As I said, I liked the book as I found it interesting. But geisha are very misunderstood especially by Western society. As I mentioned the book does speak of sex in it, so you really must decide for yourself whether or not you feel that doing a report on it would be appropriate.

So, I need to choose a novel for my senior research paper. I was thinking about choosing memoirs of a geisha. Is this an appropriate book and would you recommend it?

Never read it. what genres do you like? I might know some good alternatives you decide not to go with that book.

If you choose this book, IMO you'll need to deal with the sexual contrasts between the geisha and her sister, who is trapped in a low-income whorehouse, with all that that entails.

If I were a teacher, I'd be very disappointed if you did not, and would give you a lower grade. Also, if you don't touch on the sexual theme at all, I'd give you an even lower grade. This book is nothing without it.

ps. I thought the book was good but in a very worldly way. Does not teach or persuade anyone to believe in Christ.

If you are comparing it to history then Memoirs is quite good in that respect. The author did a good deal of research in his writing of it and much of the details he puts in it are right on.

After reading what has been said so far what is your opinion at this point? Are you thinking of trying a different book or are you planing on using Memoirs despite the sexual content?
