The Final Straw (Pornography...)

Recommended Posts

Allow me to make further recommendations. These are just my personal observations and thoughts. I appreciate that some won't agree. So take it with a grain of salt as they say.

Change your environment. Your environment has triggers that set you off. Like sitting at the computer. So I'd say move, join the military, etc.

Environment is only part of it, the real problem lies within you. Most of the fixes your listed are external, they might help, but it's really from within that's the issue. You may logically understand that it's "bad", but emotionally it's "good". Honestly, why do it? Cause it's fun and enjoyable. Eating and obesity are similar. So how to "fix" it?

It boils down to emotional reactions (pleasure/fun/happiness), habits (environmental trigers), and a lack of overriding direction (bigger reason not to do it).

Logically you don't want to do it. You know the negative effects of it like objectifying women, twisted view of sex, lack of stamina in the bedroom, etc. Yet, you still do it. Why? Because emotionally it's satisfying, it's pleasurable.

We run on emotions, it's big part of our lives. When the logical and emotional parts are not in sync, we've got problems. Logic can only hold back emotion for so long. How many stories are there about the woman who waited years for her husband to return, even though logically she knew he was probably dead. Emotions can keep you going for years and years regardless of logic.

This is what I've learned and continue to learn about. I'm no expert, but some good places to start are books like MindOS by Dr. Paul and Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard. Maybe it'll help you. Either way, good luck!

Nothing computerish is ever foolproof. I can think of a few ways to get around any filter. Thus, no filters on my systems. And no, I will not share.

We had a fairly, uh, interesting discussion regarding filters about a year ago on this thread. I'm surprised they are so regularly recommended to be honest, as it's not difficult to find just one method which will allow any local software filter to be bypassed without exception around on the interweb.

This is my personal belief, but if someone requires a filter to stop them looking at the stuff, what's going to stop them googling "how to bypass $name_of_filter"?

The only reason I mention this, is not because I'm trying to cause a fuss (like I was effectively accused of in the linked to thread) but because I don't want people (particularly the person who knows the passwords to the software in order to help their child/friend/spouse overcome their addiction) from being given false expectations from the companies who make this software and usually charge for it.

So yes, I agree with what some others have said. If you can remove any computer that you have private access to, then do it. Don't rely on technical restrictions - they won't work.

I know I'm commenting on this months after the question was asked, but if your problem still persists I have some suggestions:

1) Change your environment. If you do it in your room put posters of uplifting pictures like Christ around your bed and on the walls. If you use your CPU to find images then put a time limit so that you can't use it at night.

2) Have a goal. Make a goal that if you abstain for a week then you get (blank). Then if you abstain for a month you get (blank). Then if you abstain for 3 months you get (blank). And so on.

3) If you feel and urge or if you know about what times you start to feel an urge eat something sugary. I know it sounds weird but our body consumes a lot of glucose when we are trying to use our will power. AKA when we have a war in our mind about to do it or not, some candy may help.

4) Think of Heavenly Father in your presence. Would you be doing that stuff in front Him?

5) Think about how happy you will be if you DON'T do it.

Hope I helped

1 Corinthians 10:13

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

I always think of this... "Garbage in, Garbage out." What do you occupy your mind with? I have struggled with the same issues before in my life. Trying to master your thoughts is the key. I still have to consciously change my thoughts when they drift on to something inappropriate. I have found (as one poster already said) that saying "NOOOOOO!" and shaking my head as thoughts fill my mind... works for some reason.

Also, remember your mind is a stage... you can't think of "nothingness." Your thoughts always have to be focused on something. Try to FOCUS on other things. This takes real discipline and takes constantly telling yourself NOOOO!
