Reference Search: Jacob 5:26-27

26 And it came to pass that the Lord of the vineyard said unto the servant: Pluck off the branches that have not brought forth good fruit, and cast them into the fire.

27 But behold, the servant said unto him: Let us prune it, and dig about it, and nourish it a little longer, that perhaps it may bring forth good fruit unto thee, that thou canst lay it up against the season.

Servant said, “let us nourish a little longer”

It appears the Lord occasionally proposes that a wicked people be destroyed from off the earth or cut off from the blessings of the covenant to test the mettle and concern of his servants, the prophets. In such a case the noble spiritual leader then stands, like Jesus his exemplar, as a mediator for the people over whom he has charge. (JST, Exodus 32:9-11, 14, 30-33.)

Ibid, p. 56
