Gentile influence during the ages of apostasy—whether in the form of Greek philosophy or humanistic theology—had suppressed the truth and driven the Church of God into the wilderness. Worldliness had replaced godliness; philosophy had replaced true religion; rhetoric had replaced prophecy; and reason had supplanted revelation. Inappropriate actions will always follow on the heels of false beliefs; what we believe determines what we do.
