58 And we will nourish again the trees of the vineyard, and we will trim up the branches thereof; and we will pluck from the trees those branches which are ripened, that must perish, and cast them into the fire.

Trim up branches

The trimming of the branches of the olive tree in the last days must surely refer to the cleansing and purifying of the Saints of God, the preparation of the bride for the Bridegroom. Sanctification is a refining process, usually a lengthy transformation whereby a man or woman begins to shed carnal cares and worldly whims and put on the attributes and character of Christ their Lord. Paradoxically, it is only through the unconditional surrender of our hearts and minds to that which comes from above that we gain the absolute victory over the flesh (see D&C 64:34)….

“To read the signs of the times is to also become aware that ‘Zion must arise and put on her beautiful garments’ (D&C 82:14); that the Church of the Lamb shall continue to require the tithes, offerings, and donations of its members,” the full energies of the Saints, “until that day when a full and consecrated life is required; and that through giving all to the Lord through his Church, the Saints of the Most High shall establish a heaven on earth and eventually receive the glorious assurance of exaltation in the highest heaven.” (Sustaining and Defending the Faith, pp. 32-33.)
