I wish I could do family history, but I'm having a tough time with it.

I've been wanting to do my family history for a long time. I've been trying but I keep hitting brick walls.

I have a free account and my tree set up on ancestry.com; I've managed to fill in a lot of blanks but I don't know where to do from here. I hope the link below will work.

Have you tried going to your family history center for help? There are members there that are very experienced in this & have wonderful ideas that will be very helpful to you. What about within your Ward? There should be some members who have been set apart as Family History Specialists & they will give you great help. If you really want to dive deep into doing this, you may want to get a geneology program, especially one that is compatible with the NewFamilySearch.org website. I have been using RootsMagic 4 for the last 1 1/2 years & love it. It is a great program to use, keeps you organized & can easily download to Family Search for submitting Temple ordinances. I don't know where you live, but if you have the chance to go to Salt Lake City, the large Family History Center is a great place to get help.

I live in Florida; I'm a member of the Melbourne Ward of the Cocoa, Florida Stake. I don't think I've ever been out of the east half of the US, but I'd love to visit Salt Lake City and see the temple there in person someday.

Thanks! :)

Because of a seizure condition I used to have, my memory was really messed up; I couldn't remember my membership number, but last night I went to a special event we had in my ward teaching family history.

They found my membership number and helped me set up an account on familysearch.

Good for you, Kelly, that's a great start. I happen to be one of the Family History Consultants for my Ward & thoroughly love this calling! We start our first Family History class this coming Sunday & have a big class for this first class. We also offer assistance to our Ward members with the new family search website, as well as, using any other genealogy software programs. I personally use Roots Magic 4 & just love how easy it is to use, plus the fact that it is compatible with the new family search website, so it makes it super easy for me to submit my temple work requests. So, if I can help you with anything, just send me a message & I will be happy to do so.

Deborah

I don't know anyone who has their membership number memorized. You can get it from your membership record from the ward membership clerk. I keep a copy with all my important documents. I always have to refer to it when I need the number. :)

I'm glad someone was able to get you set up and that you're finding the information you need. :)

I haven't heard of Roots Magic 4. I was using PAF. But since the new family search website came out I haven't found the need to use even PAF anymore. Its all on the website and I don't have to duplicate entries.

Would there be any way for someone to find out which ancestors have already had their work done?

I think I found somewhere on lds.org that my maternal grandfather had his proxy baptism and confirmation already done, but I can't remember where the link was, so now I have no idea if it was done for him or not.

I know my membership number now, I just can't remember where I found the above information.

Kelly, by using the New FamilySearch you'll be able to know which ancestors have had what specific ordinances completed already, what work is still left to be done, and be able to combine multiple records for the same person, which will prevent duplicates being done. It has been a total life saver for me!!

Good luck on your journey! We are all here for help whenever you need it!

As long as you have your member number, you go to this link: https://new.familysearch.org/en/action/unsec/welcome just copy and paste that link into your computer and when the website opens up just sign up (there are easy to follow instructions). Once you're logged in login and password, you can do a search and be able to see what works have been done. Have you contacted any of your Ward's Family History Consultants yet? They would be more than happy to come to you and help you with this. Also, have you gone into your Stake Family History Center? Again, there's people there that will help you with everything. There's also computers there where they will help you with things online.

Good luck!

applepansy (cute name!) - Roots Magic 4 is a great software program that is totally compatible with New Family Search. It has the capability to be downloaded to a Flash(Memory) Stick which can travel with you. When you go to other Family History Centers, Vitals Statistic centers, and other places for information, you can run your Flash Stick on your laptop or any other computer that you may have access to. Then when you return home, you just connect the Flash Stick to your main computer to add in all the new information to your main Roots Magic 4 database, as well as, to your New Family Search database all at the same time. It is a great program! I've been running it for almost 2yrs now. I did away with my PAF program after getting Roots Magic 4, plus PAF is no longer going to be updated nor improved. Here's the link to learn more about RM4: RootsMagic - Software to Unite Families

Enjoy!
