Thoughts on modesty

Recommended Posts

We share the space on earth with the express purpose of helping each other become more and more virtuous. If our actions are performed with out consideration or caring of their effect on other humans we will be held accountable. I have skinny dipped lots and feel no need to repent. Don't get excited I am a Cureloms and weigh over 250lb.

An issue I have is that modesty is always the woman's responsibility. I have a problem with being told that I need to "cover up" for the sake of men. I understand that there are parts of the body that should not be shown but I also feel that there are parts of the body that are not sexual. I often hear people say that we should dress in such a way that we would feel comfortable standing in front of the Savior. I do not understand this saying because I am not sure why I would be uncomfortable standing in from the the Savior in anything.

I also have a problem with this idea that women who do dress immodestly being made lesser. Their thoughts and inner motives are not known and the fact that they may show more than YOU think is okay, does not speak to their character. Furthermore, rape is a crime/act of aggression not sex so it doesn't matter how one is dressed.

The fact is that men are more visually stimulated than women. I will teach my daughters to respect themselves and their bodies, and to respect the young men around them who are trying to keep their thoughts clean by dressing modestly.

This is untrue.

Most men are not visually stimulated by the sight of another man, so you're okay.

Furthermore, rape is a crime/act of aggression not sex so it doesn't matter how one is dressed.

If you really believe this, you are tremendously naive.

I don't know about other men, if I am 'normal' or um, inappropriate. .... But when I see lots of skin I have to make a conscious decision not to look. So I do make that conscious decision to not look. I'm not saying it's easy, although easier now than when I first made this commitment.

Or perhaps have seen numerous studies on the question of rape? Of course there is the factor that a rapist may see an immodestly dressed woman and decide she needs to be taught a lesson or punished for enticing men to do evil. It is always amazing how men manage to make women the guilty party. Very few women entice men to commit rape yet women are the ones who could have prevented it by dressing modestly, or so I hear. We could also prevent it by shooting all men or locking them up in cages. Oddly enough, most women dont even consider that a valid idea yet it would work even better than dressing modestly.

And no men would be enticed to sin by seeing a womans ankle!! Maybe men should try this for a rallying cry for their own salvation!!

Well it is no more farfetched than thinking women can prevent rape by dressing modestly.

not that a rapist is innocent but immodest is much more likely to stimulate that part of the brain rapist or not.

look a girl can dress however she wants. same with a guy. both should dress modestly and in all reality if one has temple garments this is much easier to accomplish.

this really a two sided sword. girls need not wear them 1 inch mini skirts. and guys shouldnt go around walking in those sleeveless work out shirts all the time. and both genders should work on the self control to let such sexual exposure arouse them which will help prevent the porn addiction that this can easily lead too you know being bombarded by sexual stimulus constantly.

the reason this is largely the females concern is because its the female image that is plastered everywhere as beautiful. on covers of magazines its the the female body. the porn star is usually highlighted as a female. the hooker is usually highlighted as a female. so in short really the female for better or worse has the bear the brunt of the repsonsibility

female clothing is more and more revealing overtime. females are taught more and more be concerned with looks. show skin. these are all mostly female images shoved down our throats. its not quite as common for men or quite as problematic. there is no boob surgery for men.

problem for both genders yes. but the messages are largely targeted at women.

Who shoves those images down our throat?

large chunk of the world if you are implying it is just men....well i hate to break it to you but their are women in powerful positions these days. and women that support the sexuallisation of the female body.
