Which Study Manual?

Neither. Both are designed to briefly discuss concepts that are separated out of the context within which they are written. They are built for people who do not know much about the gospel. For a person looking for in-depth study of the Book of Mormon, you will have to go with more scholarly efforts that are out there. These will do one or two things: first consolidated ideas into themes, which ties the teachings and concepts together; second, they will enter into textual criticism, meaning they will analyze phrases or even words to see how they can potentially impact the concepts being written about.

For an example of this, look at Joe Spencer's blog posts at FmH regarding Abish and the conversion of King Lamoni and his wife:
