Explosin kills Josh Powell, 2 sons | Deseret News

The Child Protective Services worker brought the two boys to Josh Powell's home, and Powell let his sons inside — but then blocked the social worker from entering, Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz told The Associated Press.

The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas, and moments later the home exploded.

I was really shocked when I read the news report on KSL.com earlier. Never ever thought it would come to this.

And I am really hoping that the story doesn't end here. The Cox family still needs the closure that finishing the investigation would provide. My heart is breaking for them.

I'm in shock and angry with DCFS. This is not the first time nor will it be the last that they make a bad decision.

Unfortunately this isn't really the end. What happened to Susan and where her body is will never be answered.

Unless it was his dad not Josh who actually did the original murder then got Josh involved in the coverup. My guess is its a 50/50 chance either way.

Oh my goodness. I felt this was a bad situation all around, but this is just awful.

Did I miss it in the article - why was a social worker involved? Did somebody out there get a clue and figure out the boys needed to be supervised in some way, considering their father or grandfather was probably a murderer?

My best friend works at their school and was just talking to one of them last week, holding his hand at recess while he talked about what he wanted to be when he grew up. :( I just can't believe how this was handled. If Josh was desperate enough to (probably) kill his wife, he was certainly capable of this. Why on earth would they choose his home for a meeting place? I'm sure this will be a learning experience for the state, but what a horrible way to learn it! I think this was mostly an act of revenge against his in-laws.

Josh Powell's dad (with whom he and the boys had been living) was busted on voyeurism and child porn charges last September. Susan's parents (who also live in Washington, I think) subsequently got temporary custody of the boys, with supervised parent time for dad. Josh was ordered to undergo a psychosexual evaluation in a court hearing just last week (SL Tribune story here).

I think it's a bit premature to blame DCFS. We don't know what the courts ordered as far as the specifics to the supervised visits. Even Josh's attorney states he never saw anything like this coming. Many are always quick to blame DCFS instead of putting blame where it really lies. And in this case it's with Josh.

DCFS is in a no-win situation some times. Either they go to great lengths to protect children from "suspect" people (and Josh Powell wasn't even that. He was never charged with any crime or even considered a "suspect", just a "person of interest") and get accused of being heavy handed (because who would be happy about DCFS completely removing their children from their home based only on unproven accusations?) or they DON'T go to great lengths, leaning on "innocent until proven guilty", and the person ends up doing something awful to the children that ends up "proving" that, yes, they really were as guilty as the court was trying to prove them to be.

One change I hope *does* come from this is having supervised visitations in a neutral location. Not only would children be safer, but also the people in charge of supervising the visitations. Josh Powell could have just as easily taken that social worker along with him and the boys. Heck, all he'd have had to do was open the door with a gun in hand and she'd have been gone. Even otherwise good people can do desperate things when they're lives are in upheaval like this.

On the other hand; when you're as far gone as Powell was, I think he'd quite possibly have shown up at the "neutral location" with an Uzi and taken out anyone who happened to be in the building.

For my part, I've seen DCFS get pretty militant against parents who failed to keep their kids on a leash every second of every day. Hopefully this will remind DCFS that even a good parent (or--ulp--a DCFS caseworker) can have a kid get away from them now and then.

That actually was my first thought when people mentioned here and in other places over the web that it should have been in a neutral place.

I heard about this last night. I think it is really affecting me. Maybe partly because I am human, but more so since I am almost 9 months prego. I cried when I heard this. So very sad. :(

How can a parent do this?

I cried about this too. Its just so hard to get a handle on how a person could do such a thing. It just didnt have to happen.

Then I start thinking about all the really stupid/crazy things that man did all along and wonder why we didnt see it coming.

I am not sure anyone could have stopped this. Courts let parents see children unless there is a direct and for sure history of some kind of abuse. And sometimes they still let them. It would have taken a lot more to happen for all contact to be stopped. Courts like to let children see natural parents as much as possible. Even if it is supervised like in this case.

Eventually the kids would have told everything they knew. Eventually the kids would have grown old enough to understand what they saw as well. Josh was in a hard spot he had very little maneuvering room to get out of and it was getting smaller all the time.

I can see why he cracked, farther than before anyway, but it's still no excuse for any of it. _._

It just keeps getting worse.

I can imagine that the kids ran to their mom in the here-after, leaving dad to think things over.

I've been ticked off as courts meddled in my visitation rights with my kids but the last thing I would ever do would be to hurt anyone especially my kids. I guess it's a matter of perspective and level of narcissism. I say that because in my experience, and what I've seen in others, is that an extreme lack of hope just doesn't make a person rise to this level of violence. But I could be wrong.
