It seems like the Marines are the crazy ones.

Well Yeeaaaah!

The more elite training they get the more crazy dedicated they are. If caught by the opposing force I'd squeal like a stuck pig. Not the Marines (to a greater extent) nor the special forces.

Drunk? Yep, those that drink do get drunk. Not my thing, but consider going out for a year or two with nothing,.... NOTHING! to do. Try that sacrifice.

Maybe we should just cut to the chase,... how about standing behind your theory. Go live in any of the uh,... safer third world countries. Forget Darfur and the like. Somewhere like Iran or Liberia ect. Places you don't have to worry about drunken marines off duty, stable governments that to a greater extent do not provide for the common welfare. Then go about with complaints you have about them.

Of course, this is America and you don't have to put up or shut up. Those marines? They and all the other drunk military types have made personal sacrifices so you can rattle your tin saber.

I'll stop ranting. Sorry.

I have also seen them drunk in public and jumping off a bridge into a deep creek acting like idiots, changing pants in public. It seems like the Marines are the crazy ones. For some reason I recall in high school it was seemed to always be the crazy punk types that joined the Marines. I guess you gotta be crazy to do the things they do.

Interesting. I have dealt with a lot of people behaving like this in the past 15 years. Lots. So far, I can only remember two (together) that were in the military. All the others I have dealt with were very respectful, even while drunk. I can't say that about a lot of the people I've had to deal with that were not in the military. I wonder what world you live in. Does the sun shine much? You seem awfully consumed with hatred. I hope you find some peace, I'd suggest starting with the scriptures. They certainly bring peace to a lot of people I know.

Oh, here in the DC area? Nooooo, there's no military around here <sarcasm>. Some of them are certainly decent, but I have also seen them drunk in public and jumping off a bridge into a deep creek acting like idiots, changing pants in public. As opposed to the non-military crazy ones who become Walmart greeters? Oh, how about the ones that go work for the post office? I mean, it is not the marines that earned the phrase "Go postal".

I think you've been watching too much TV news network...

Wow what kind of Walmart greeters do you have? Here in Utah I've pretty much have only seen seniors as Walmart greeters.

Guest Godless

I get so tired of hearing that they are the folks defending our freedom. They are also the ones who are whacked going in and even more whacked coming out. They are also the ones who go into homes of innocent Americans confiscating weapons when Martial Law is declared (such as in Lousiana after Hurricane Katrina). Oh, I know, they were just following orders.

I've been in the Army for 9 years and have served three tours in the Middle East. I don't think I'm all that much more "whacked" now than I was when I was 18. The same is true for most of the people I've served with. But of course, the normal, boring, and well-adjusted troops that make up the majority of our armed forces don't make the news nearly as much as the .001% who snap and commit horrible atrocities against innocent civilians.

Pammy, my experience is that Utah Wal-Marts are not like other Wal-Marts . . .

I guess I need to explore Walmarts in other states then. Not that that is usually on my itinerary when traveling. :)

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." - variously attributed to Winston Churchill and George Orwell

Whether the above is a misquotation or not, I think it hits at an obvious truth: We enjoy freedom because we (or our military placeholders) are willing to defend that freedom. I may not necessarily agree with the worshipful attitude sometimes displayed toward the military and its members by social conservatives, but I think showing respect and gratitude toward those who serve in the military is only reasonable.

Actually, the church has no say in the wearing of military uniform at church. But the DOD does have specifications of when and where military dress uniforms can be worn during time of service, and after separation and retirement.

One of the requirements that bugged me, was wearing military uniform is requirement when traveling at a major airport.

The recent thread on firearms got me wondering:

Does the Church have a policy on the wearing of military uniforms at Sunday services, or at/after temple weddings?

Couldn't find anything in Book 2.

If you are active duty military wearing a uniform is your dress either for work or church or just around the base. I have seen many in uniform going into a temple that was close to a military base, what is wrong with showing up in your dress uniform?

I being a former military person like to see our young people step up and put on that uniform don't care what branch as it matters little to me.

I was in a ward once where our bishop was a state trooper and he came in dressed for work many times and yes he was wearing his sidearm and we had active MP's that would leave their sidearm in their vehicles which is a violation of their duty status. I was one of the ones that had the honor of escorting these MP's back to their vehicles to get their sidearm and then re-enter the meeting house in full uniform as is required of them when on duty.

What is the bottom line here what is required to be properly dressed in your uniform is what you wear to church. A sword is not always a part of the dress uniform. But a sidearm depending on your status just might be. I know some feel uncomfortable around individuals wearing such things but you know if you ever need that tool and it is not available you will never feel unsafe again if someone broke the rule and had it when it was needed most.

If we don't have the guts to honor our military personnel when they come to worship no matter what their dress how can be expect them to honor us with their lives when needed to protect us?

I hope there aren't any rules against it, as just this weekend we went to see my stepson graduate from BMT at Lackland AFB. We went to church with him on the base, and every military member of the congregation was wearing their uniform, including the two men blessing the sacrament, and all the men that were passing the sacrament. I went to RS and I can tell ya the spirit was definitely there, the love and care the leaders felt for the women in that room was staggering. I feel so assured that my stepson has a ward family that cares for him through all of the training trials he is having. He heard tesimonies from others facing the same issues he is having...and later testified of their truthfulness to us.

So proud of him!

whacked as in off their rockers, or shot at type whacked?

Police confiscate weapons all the time from people in all sorts of different places.. what's bad about it when the military does it?

While I have not personally had to live through any disaster I understand that such brings out both the best and the worst in people. Generally things have gone really bad before the national guard or the armed forces are called in- and usually its to help with cleanup or supply or rescue operations rather than policing.

But, I imagine that when the armed forces are called in to do the policing they do the policing like they police themselves- it's billy clubs first and then questions later.

As for protecting our freedom? you betcha they do it. Where do terrists go to attack america now? middle east where our forces are, because they have been pressured so much it's harder for them to perform more attacks like 9/11 on american soil.

So the 2000 Stripling Warriors, Capt Moroni, and I were/are all whacked? I rather take exception to that.

Generalizing based on TV coverage of a natural disaster is deplorable, and shows a certain degree of laziness. If you feel that the current crop of military personnel are doing a poor job, by all means please feel free to volunteer and make things better!
