Dravin Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Going to Vegas means you walk past/through gaming casinos, and see the half naked ladies advertising their "shows" on the sidewalks. Those activities take place off the strip? If not, it should be pointed out that Vegas is more than just the strip. Avoid the strip and you avoid the activities associated with the strip. Quote
pam Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Going to Vegas means you walk past/through gaming casinos, and see the half naked ladies advertising their "shows" on the sidewalks. You can find a family friendly cruise that does not present bad things to your kids. Strange, I've been to Vegas numerous times and I've never seen this. Even on the strip. The half naked women I mean. It's kind of hard not to pass any type of gaming in Nevada. I've seen slot machines even in restrooms in gas stations. Quote
rameumptom Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 You'll mostly see the ladies passing out flyers and stuff in the evenings. And Dravin, almost everything goes on at the strip. You want a hotel, most likely on the strip. Want to see a show? On the strip. Nice buffet? On the strip. Yes, there are some neat things to see on the strip. There are several free shows and activities going on both inside and outside the casinos. But, again, you have to walk past all the garbage to get to the neat stuff. Quote
pam Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Other than the shows, I've been able to get the other two far from the strip. Quote
Bini Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 I'm not sure exactly what Ram is referring to but he's not necessarily off track with his comment. Having walked the Strip many times, I've had the awkward experience of having the ticket flickers come up to me and flick their tickets in my face. If you bother to look, you'll actually see thousands of these tickets and fliers scattered all over the ground. For those that are unfamiliar with what is on them - they typically have a hotline number and advertise scantily clad or nude but censored women on them. All this said, they tend not to approach families but they certainly bombard most adults walking the sidewalks. As for actual "show girls" standing out on the sidewalks advertising shows and events - never personally seen it but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I know the old Flamingo hotel in Vegas typically has show girls standing right in front of their entrance greeting people, and they wear nothing but feathers and a bikini. Treasure Island, though typically considered one of the "family hotels", also has an outside attraction where scantily clad women perform a dance number and short skit on their outside pirate ship. It's very entertaining, it's free, so a lot of families do stop to see this BUT if you're at all sensitive to over-exposed skin showing, you probably will want to avoid this. Quote
pam Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 I must be totally blind then because I go to Vegas 3-4 times a year and I've just never seen any of this. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. But I usually stay off the strip. Quote

You want a hotel, most likely on the strip. Want to see a show? On the strip. Nice buffet? On the strip. Las Vegas is a city of over a half million people. That idea that all the hotels in such a large city are located on the strip is rather laughable. Do I need to do a Google search of hotels? Resturants? Likewise entertainment venues are going to exist off of the strip. Sure, there are various entertainment venues, shows, and hotels only available on the strip but that's a far cry from entertainment, resturants, and hotels only being found on the strip. pam Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 In Las Vegas, there are approximately 18 Stakes. You figure there has to be 6-7 wards in each stake. Around 300 in each ward. That's almost 37,000. Certainly there is entertainment for those numbers that would want to be away from the strip. Quote

Not laughable at all, rather true. Also people need to realize that Las Vegas is a top vacation spot for many around the world and USA. Just because you live by it does it make it one of the best Vacation spots. I am sure the people who live in Europe would laugh at you for saying it is one of the best vacation spots. In a previous post, I forgot to mention the Temple. Quote
pam Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 The good entertainment, hotels and buffets are only on the strip. Not laughable at all, rather true. Then I guess I've only been to bad buffets since I tend to stay away from the strip. Quote
Vort Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 The good entertainment, hotels and buffets are only on the strip. Not laughable at all, rather true.I'm pretty sure this is untrue. When my sister lived there, she took us to eat at a rather nice restaurant located nowhere near the Strip. She refused to go within two miles of the Strip and had not been there in years. Quote
Tyler90AZ Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 I am not saying the strip has the only good stuff. Just the fact that strip has millions of tourists yearly, therefore, the better entertainment seems to be on the strip. That is what logic would tell me, then again I don't use common sense often. BenRaines Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 As far as LDS residents there are over 100,000 in the Las Vegas valley. That takes in Henderson, North Las Vegas and surrounding areas. Some of the most faithful members of the church I found there the 8 yrs I lived there. Ben Raines Quote

I would agree that as far as shows, the best would be on the strip. I'm just disagreeing that the strip is the only place to get hotels and good buffets. Quote
pam Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 What I have found is, those that want to talk down about Vegas has only been on the strip. There is much much more to Vegas than just the strip. Quote
NeuroTypical Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 To me, part of raising righteous, capable, grounded, moral kids, is to give them a good handle on what sin is and does. We've had good luck walking them through casinos once every couple of years. They see the alluring call of the lights and sounds and raucous laughter. But they also see the glassy-eyed rows of faces blankly pouring money into machines. They see the objectivised women and the looks on the faces of the guys paying to go see what's showing behind the curtain. They see the impact of drug and alcohol abuse lying in the gutters and behind bars. Honestly, casinos and all they represent, have helped us raise righteous kids quite a bit - just because we know what to point out to them. All that said, we'd take a Disney cruise. We had a blast in the park last year - one girl taught Tinkerbell how to finger knit as we were taking pictures. Quote
Traveler Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 I posted what I believe to be the "best" family vacation #24. Reading the rest of this thread convinces me that once again I am dealing with ardent members of the lazy - take care of me - entertain me - entitlement generation. The Traveler Quote

Traveler Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Self righteous much?Perhaps - but before we settle it - have you ever been white water rafting?I have been to Las Vegas and I have been on a Cruise. I find it interesting that both cater to gambling - I cannot think of a more entitled mentality than the typical individual attracted to gambling environment. The Traveler Quote
Guest Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 White water rafting is fun, but only fitting for families with kids old enough to do it, and the health to be able to handle it. So if people want some R&R that doesn't include your chosen recreation, they're lazy and entitled? Quote

They look like a lot of fun for families. Maybe I could take some valium or something to not feel anxious the whole time. :/ Quote

Concluding that people responding with one or the other consider them to be the best vacation ever is akin to watching people respond to a question on if they prefer cherry or strawberry ice cream and concluding nobody appreciates chocolate. Tyler90AZ Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Really? Because you said this:Well the better entertainment is on the strip. Good catch though! Quote
