These weather related issues are increasingly effecting more of us personally and they effect all of us collectively in the form of higher prices in the grocery store, at the gas station and additional monies in taxes/debt for the government to help those effected by these calamities. Personally, as my calling as a Preparedness specialist puts me over food storage group buys for my area a reduction in supply or an increase in prices is concerning, i.e. I wonder with rising prices for food, health care, gas, etc. how long the window of opportunity to prepare for calamities will remain open for most families.

June 9th Haboob in Colorado

There are Dust Bowl Conditions in Colorado along with Winter Wheat Crop Devastation

"While parts of Iowa have received more than 17 inches of rain this spring following a drought last summer, currently the Southeast corner of Colorado, parts of Kansas, New Mexico, and Texas are in D4, the worst stage of drought measured by the U.S. Drought Monitor. The three month drought forecast map offers no reason for hope, either. The Denver Post article contains farm family stories that also sound like they are straight out of the 1930′s. With phrases like “had to cover their faces with handkerchiefs” and “opened the front door and saw 3-foot drifts of dirt everywhere” and “I couldn’t see five feet in front of me”, one wonders how wide this region of blowing dust will become over the remainder of this year."

Last year the extreme heat across the country started in July. While we don't know if that will happen this year yet, I find the current reports concerning as Summer has NOT officially begun and yet "searing, record-breaking heat will expand out of the Southwest into the Rockies, Southern Plains and Southeast over the next few days."

Currently Record breaking (or near record breaking heat) in California, Nevada, Utah.

"As storms and rain threaten much of the rest of the country, record-breaking heat in parts of the Southwest was believed to be responsible for at least two deaths this weekend. Boy Scout leader Clawson Bowman Jr., a 69-year-old Las Vegas native, was found dead Saturday in Lake Mead National Recreation Area park, which straddles Arizona and Nevada. The rescue team saved four boys, all Boy Scouts, and another man, who were treated for heat-related illnesses."

I am concerned for my brothers and sisters because I love them. Concern and watching are not synonyms with fearing. I think it is interesting that both President Monson and President Hinckley have given talks on "If ye are prepared ye shall not fear."

Regarding "Fear and doubt", that is something President Monson talked about in his message to the Church in the June 2011 Ensign...

"Living welfare principles is about putting our faith in Jesus Christ into action—by...establishing family home storage...Our faith leads us to educate our minds and our hands and to work every day of our lives to be self-reliant. Having taken care of our own needs, we are better able to provide for ourselves and serve others. May we follow the counsel not only to do good but strive to be good, not just to do better but to be better. Obedience to the Lord’s counsel brings temporal and spiritual blessings. It allows us to face the challenges of life armed with courage and confidence rather than fear and doubt."

President Monson, June 2011 Ensign

In that same message on self-reliance we were told that once we are prepared we should do all we can to help our neighbors prepare. I want us all armed with courage and confidence by being obedient to the Lord's counsel and commandments which truly brings temporal and spiritual blessings. But that is another thread, so now back to "watching with all perseverence" as Elder Bednar has counseled us to do so often in recent years.

Hawaii June 2013 28% decrease in tradewinds since the 1970s

"These days, the trade winds are mysteriously dying down, and Hawaiians are having to cope with something normally associated with Midwestern summers and the Deep South: humidity...The trade winds also bring rains to the islands, and these days Hawaii is seeing a decline in water levels. Officials are working to fast track mountain conservation programs to shore up existing water supplies, and are studying new methods for farmers to use when planting crops.

Overall, the crops are only down 8 percent from last year! which is good considering the drought that extended through the winter months in many areas. What I didn't see in the reports was the quality of the wheat harvested which is also important.

The bad news is that exports are so high that our stocks will remain at a 5 year low and export sales this year started very strong and have continued. Other major exporters have seen excessive heat recently which has moved up their harvests iin time and slightly reduced their output.

The bad news, where we are with stockpiles going into the 2013 season:

Increased corn sowing will boost stockpiles that fell to the lowest in 16 years as inventories on June 1 totaled 2.76 billion bushels the lowest since 1997. Soybeans are .435 billion bushels currently. Wheat . 750 billion bushels. (USDA June 2013 Quarterly Grain Stocks report in billions of bushels released June 28, 2013)

The good news, U.S. farmers are forecast by the USDA to produce record harvests this year, while the United Nations predicts global wheat output will be the highest ever. Record levels or almost record numbers of many crops have been put in the groung so far this year. Oilseed, corn, soybeans, etc.

Frequent rain and no extreme heat is what is being predicted for this season. :) Hope so.

It is a good time to buy bulk grains as farmers are concerned prices will be going down with a bumper crop and are selling even though current stocks available are very low.

What I know is that it is REALLY hot here, especially for our little swamp cooler to keep up with...REALLY hot!

Remember earlier in this thread that one of the things I/we have been "watching" is

to see if there is a regional drought which would make this a three year drought meeting or exceeding the "dust bowl" years. The regional drought in the West looks like it could do that. The thing is that last year the extreme temperatures and drought iin the midwest started in July, this year's started in June. Ouch! No real end to this heat wave in sight.

"The irrigation water restrictions are in play throughout the state as communities, farmers and ranchers are left to deal with a snowmelt that peaked unseasonably early and rivers and streams that continue to dwindle with each passing week. Dry ground compounded by lack of rainfall and the heat are all combining to create untenable conditions for many of Utah's farmers and ranchers."

"the U.S. Department of Agriculture noted that the national cattle herd...was at its lowest level in 60 years"

The fact of the matter is that we are going through a heat age (though it's being dubbed as global warming, same difference), just like the ice age that nearly froze the entire planet ages ago, the planet is going through a cycle where things are becoming extremely hot, and while some of it is man-caused, most of it is natural. States and Foreign Countries that never needed technology like AC are getting massive heatwaves. Currently I'm living in Wyoming and the lack of AC is making people suffer, that and I was there in Germany when thousands died during a heatwave because of the lack of proper AC and similar countermeasures that were not needed before. The only thing we had there and here was popcicles, ice cream, and fans going on 24/7.

It IS extremely weird weather!

During the winter people similarly say we are going through another ice age because of the extremes of cold weather in places where these cold temperatures are seldom or never seen.

But like I have been saying throughout this thread, the common statement you will find in these articles is that the weather systems/jet stream stalled or is doing very weird things.

The fact that winters seem more harsh also is that the planet is also counteracting the extreme heat with with extreme cold, but it seems flipside where it is.

I remember in 2006 when Florida had snow, and also I was TX at the time and it snowed even though I was in the more central/lower half where snow happened like never.

So it seems maybe the the spots that used to be cold are now hot, and the parts that used to be hot are now cold?

Maybe there will be a point that the equator is the new frozen part of the planet and the two poles are the hottest.

Also humanity's continued abuse-level uses of fossil fuels is accelerating the matter.

Gradually, the earth is being prepared for a state during the Millennium when the earth will receive it paradisiacal glory when the Savior will personally reign. It is obviously true that the weather has been radically changing from time to time. Trust the Lord to know what He is doing and listen and obey the modern day prophets and heed their warnings. You will be prepared to face the probable hard times ahead and you will be able to serve others as well. Blessings, Gar

"The fact"... :) From an LDS perspective most might be more apt to believe that the Earth is suffering under the amount of wickedness and sin on it rather than man's "abuse of fossil fuels." (Moses 7:48)

However, if I had to pick a theory for what is going on I would go with the "expanding earth" or "polar shift" theories as there are scriptures and early discourses of the leaders in our Church to suggest that these things might happen before the millennium. This expanding theory also helps explain why we are seeing increasing earthquakes, sink holes, and the new and/or increasingly active volcanoes (each one can put off 950 tons of CO2 each day), the polar shift theory might cause changes in water currents and so wind currents as well, etc.

Polar Shift is happening now

"The magnetic pole is moving faster than at any time in human history, causing major problems for navigation and migratory wildlife. The magnetic north pole is currently shifting at a faster rate than at any time in human history almost 40 miles a year — and some experts believe that it may be the beginning of a complete pole reversal...The changes are beginning to cause major problems..."

Magnetic north shifting by 40 miles a year, might signal pole reversal - CNN iReport

"If a large pole shift could happen suddenly, the redistribution of land and water it caused would be nothing short of cataclysmic. In the short term, it would mean earthquakes, strange weather patterns, massive tsunamis capable of drowning parts of continents, and possibly gaps in the planet's magnetic field -- our shield against harmful cosmic rays. In the long term, the redistribution of land and water in the tropics, subtropics and poles would fundamentally alter ocean currents and the heat balance of the Earth, resulting in widespread climatological shifts. Ice caps might melt and reform elsewhere, or remain melted, driving sea levels down or up."

HowStuffWorks "Are the Earth's poles shifting in 2012?"

Along the expansion line I thought this article was interesting...

"Parting Of The Red Sea

Over a period of three weeks...the crust on both sides of the Red Sea moved apart approximately...(26 feet), and magma rose out of the Sea. The molten rock - enough to fill a football stadium more than 2,000 times – was injected along a vertical crack under the Red Sea, forming new crust and splitting the Sea open...The Earth is continually moving in this region, and the Red Sea is parting much more rapidly now than ever recorded."

5.5 Earthquake Parts The Red Sea

Also earthquakes have been increasing in strength see this chart for 5+ earthquakes...

dlindquist.com - Research - Earthquake Project - Historical Quakes

But whether extremes of weather are manmade or God made or unhappy Mother Earth made or just random/nature made is an ENDLESS debate that I would rather not go into here on this thread...as I said before, please, this is a thread to watch the weather and what is currently happening with crops, droughts, and other weather extremes caused by stalling or shifting air currents, not to speculate on and especially not to debate the causes.

Thanks!

Here is a drought monitor showing that most of the West is in SEVERE drought this year so far and we are just headed into the hottest month of the year. My guess is that we will or even already have well surpassed the drought of the dust bowl years.

As we are still in abundance there is something that one can do to prepare for things like pandemics, extreme droughts and unexpected calamities...buy food ahead so you will have it for a rainy day or in this case a not so rainy day. The prophet said in 2007 that it is a commandment from a loving Heavenly Father to do so, of course previous prophets have been telling us to prepare for well over 100 years. Unfortunately, only a very small percentage of LDS folk actually do.

US Drought Monitor

Perhaps a lot of people are praying. Isn't it interesting that basically the I-15 corridor where the major populations are in Utah and parts of Idaho/Nevada continue to be a major area in the West that isn't in Severe-Extreme drought? Looks like to the West of the Intermountain West things got worse, but improved a bit to the East.

Some of our reservoirs are telling a different story, my family's favorite one was so low this year that the previously lakeside campground was shut down.

Note: September is preparedness month and case lot sales in many areas, a great time to stock up for the long winter, as well as for a future rainy day. If you live near Honeyville, their wheat is on sale $14 for 50 lbs a GREAT price. It was a good wheat harvest with the protein content reportedly pretty good this year overall and more particularly for red wheat as well.

This year 2013 there was a bumper crop of wheat and corn and soy as prices overall are headed down, but with the crazy demand some experts expect to see prices eventually rebound somewhat for wheat.

Also US HRW is the crop with the best protein content where other types of wheat and other countries wheat quality is not expected to be as good.

China's price for bread flour has been at an all time high. China is expected to beat out Egypt this year as the largest importer of grain. China and Brazil (who don't usually buy much from us) are importing like CRAZY and so our wheat ending stock will actually be lower this year than last year, which is unexpected because of our large harvest

Did you hear the one about the global warming scientists that were locked in ice in the antarctic this week and after the rescue ice breaker got stuck had to be airlifted out? No joke...crazy record breaking COLD temps all over the world lately.

In the US we outdid the "dust bowl" drought (regional drought - texas/south region, US drought, regional drought - western region, with record breaking heat) AND the regional drought in the West is still ongoing.

Currently beginning of 2014

California not El Nino or La Nina, but La Nada - experienced the driest calendar year on record in 2013. In Los Angeles, the total rainfall for 2013 was only 3.60 inches compared to 15, the driest calendar year in 135 years. Up north Oakland had the lowest rainfall on record ~4 inches with normal rainfall of ~20 inches.

Utah - Many reservoirs around 50 percent or less because of two years of ongoing drought, we need a snowpack of 120 percent of average AND a wet spring. Last of December and first weeks of January no new snow with none on the immediate horizon in many areas. Maybe extra prayers are in order?

This year's bumper crops have brought down prices and recent rains easing the drought in South America may mean continued lower prices, good news for those who are following Heavenly Father's command to "prepare every needful thing" and gather in during this time of abundance (See food storage page on provident living's quote from first presidency). US grain exports on the other hand have continued to "far exceed expectations."

Talk is:

That some of the rivers relied upon for water are little more than mud

That banks are hesitant to loan seed money this year

California grows about half of the fruits and vegetables for the US - but not this year

Prices for some fruits and nuts particularly will be going UP

The fire risk will remain high

This drought has been worse than the dust bowl years in intensity and duration. I know California and Utah will be fasting this Sunday for rain. Many of our reservoirs are very low.

This largest (in area) at the time this thread was started drought may also become the costliest natural disaster in US history.
