I think the best way to find out if one way is more helpful than another way is to just try everything. Most of what I know is just from playing around in family history sites. I also love internet groups. Yahoo has one called Brickwall. It is full of names that people are stuck on. Check out the family history center near you. They should have ancestry.com. Also here the public library has it, so is another place to check. I was on it a little while ago at the library here, so know that some have it.

new.familysearch.org is going away early 2013. It is being replaced by Family Tree which is up and running now. Family Tree is a living database.

After you sign in at familysearch.org you should already have the Family Tree link on the top line. If you don't let me know and I'll send you the invitation link.

(Right now I'm in ARizona but I'll be back home by Monday night. I can be more helpful when I get home. btw, I'm our wards family history coordinator.)
